Interesting. I also enjoyed reading "This Is Your Brain on Music" by Daniel J. Levitin. You can read it for free on the Internet Archive here: https://archive.org/details/thisisyourbraino0000levi

Thanks. Very interesting the history, science, and effects of music. Definitely in our genes and always around us.

I don’t think we could be happy without music. Even the most ancient of peoples were making music of one form or another. Inventing instruments, singing.

Hi,

It is badly dated and could use a more modern version for many of us.

Some of the ideas mentioned are nowadays thought of as ridiculous, and in general, it is nothing but an advertisement for popular music, that we must follow and understand ... and you and I know that these days, this is not true at all, and things have changed, mostly due to various different styles and musics, as is the case with classical, jazz and ethnic musics.

I wanted to detail many bits and pieces from the whole thing, but it will come off like the whole thing is wrong. I don't think it is wrong ... but 50 years has changed a lot of how we look at things ... and even some of the comments in it, are quite bizarre to our imaginations.

The one thing that is crazy is the ideas about Major/Minor have seriously changed as some clever folks have been able to show the ideas as not exactly true, and only having to do with the composing style ... example, that all major parts go to the right on the piano, and all the minor parts go to the left on the piano. This is very similar to the way that the Church in Europe has thought for 2000 years ... where everything they said was made into law, and folks killed for going against it ... and today, we don't really support these things, but we allow them to continue showing up with the same thoughts and ideas that we tend to not really believe in, or even work on.
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
