In the beginning they were a psych band (Piper). Than they started to develop space rock and became one of the biggest influences in this genre. They didn't stick to same formula. Instead they experimented also on other fields: symphonic rock (Atomn Heart) and avant (Ummagumma)... But they were best in space rock that became more refined in latter albums: DSOTM, WYWH and Animals. The Wall was already in the time of dawnfall. Only after that they became more mainstream...

At first glance we see a band with mediocore playing skills and simple music trying too hard to be prog. But when you listen closely you hear a great complexity in lyrics, sound (timbre, effects, production, arrangements), atmosphere, emotional feel and long song developement...
Thus I understand why someone, who likes prog only for the sake of obvious complexity and virtuosity can't find anything interesting in the music of Pink Floyd.

I appreciate a lot of those qualities but at times find their music can be a little anaemic. Floyd in my view can 'strangle' a peice of music to the point where it becomes almost claustrophobic by trying to hard.Animals is their masterwork IMO because the rockier side of the band is allowed to come out, especially on Sheep.DSOTM is just far too introverted for my liking. They probably were worried about the impact of their change of direction at the time and so always sound like they are holding back.I hate that in music.

Don't believe everything you read

You can prove anything with science - but I think that DSOTM is built on the basis of enjoying the music creation process and making the most pleasing sounds possible in a given timeframe.

I would suggest that any fractional mathematics you may find in the structures of the music are  purely co-incidental...

The Music made by bands like pink floyd, the doors, etc come with very deep feelings and a real spirit, pure electronic music like the techno of today are just beats at the right time.

What do you think of the movies of pink floyd, not to forget their concerts! I especially like "the wall" because it's serious stuff that asks for your attention, but it also has dark sarcasm, very well done!

It's no wonder that today, people are still listening to pink floyd, and they're long not forgotten!!!
I wonder how long todays artists - no fence - will remain...

Pink Floyd is just a piece of history.

I thank you

The "Live At Pompeii" footage is fantastic - truly a complete work of art (Gesamtkunstwerk? ).

I don't think Wagner would've appreciated to be compared to such a bunch of future stoners.

But if you think about it, the Floyd are probably the closest in all rockdom to the concept. Their live shows involving Spitfires crashing into the stage, massive walls being built and one of the earliest surround sound / freaky light show is pretty close.

Anyway, Wagner is boring...
