I have for many years told people that this young guy Rory Mcilroy is something special and will become one of the sports greats. I was proven right this weekend when he won US Open with eight strokes.

Hence, I have not stopped smiling today.

So much that I have just returned from a drugs test at work. They have a no tolerance to drugs there and my constant grinning and smiling raised the alarms. I am normally as friendly as a roll with barbed wire.

I lived in Belfast and Northern Ireland for 3 years and it is fair to say that a large chunk of my heart was left behind when I moved back to Scotland again. I almost got married there too.... and...... well, there is a type of sorrows you never gets over.

Rory Mcilroy is born and bred in Belfast and in County Down, just south-east of Belfast. During the civil war normally referred to The Troubles, both places were ravaged. Some sort of peace broke out before Rory was born, but the place is still pretty rough and divided.

My hope, and belief, is that these wounds and divisions can be mended through uniting behind a sports hero. Like for example the local hero Rory Mcilroy.

I am therefore happy for this genuine friendly and great sportsman Rory Mcilroy and for Northern Ireland who finally has got a hero to celebrate. And I believe Rory Mcilroy will dethrone Tiger Woods as the in facto leader of the golf world and the example to follow for the 250 million hobby & club golfers out there. That would just be fantastic and keep the drug testing room at my work very busy.

Hence, I am grinning and smiling today.

I'm happy for Rory and hope he, Kaymer, Dustin Johnson, Jason Day, Manassero, Fowler, and some of the other young guns dominate international golf over the next 20+ years.  Here's hoping the Tiger era is officially dead.  I'm especially happy that international golfers are dominating the world rankings right now because maybe, just maybe, we can get closer to that world tour that Greg Norman always wanted.  I'm sick of seeing the same boring courses on tv every year and the Fedex Cup is a joke.  As much as I loved seeing Rory lap the field this week I wouldn't be sad to never see Congressional never host another major.  Buick Open scoring at a U.S. Open is shameful.

Time always wins.
