I previously disliked Gong and it's only recently that I've come to give them a second chance. What a fool I've been. Oily Way made an immediate impression, so that has to be my favourite, but I imagine I'll have plenty more to discover..

I love the whole of Angel's Egg, it's a masterpiece! I also have a soft spot for And You Tried So Hard from Camembert Electrique.
I've got a copy of Time Is the Key by Pierre Moerlen's Gong; the first side of the LP is full of wonderful percussion that reminds me of Steve Reich but the other side gets a bit too funkyjazzrock for my taste.

Love is how Y make it should be mentioned more, nothing like a song that sums up the whole trilogy in 3 minutes

You'v pretty much summed it up, those are easily some of Gongs finest songs... I'd possibly add 'You Cant Kill Me' and 'Fohat Digs Holes in Space' and 'Gong Song' though. |

Most of the time I listen to them I'm not paying atention to the track listing so the albums sounds like a whole song. I think is better that way

Yes, I also do my air bass and air drums almost every time I listen to this track. And of course, when the sax and guitar solos get in, I can't help looking across my bedroom as if Malherbe and Hillage were actually on the other side of the "stage". Prog makes me sort of schizo at times... |

Thanks for reminding that great band! Zero the Hero and the Witch's Spell I just love the vocal improvisation from the second minute to the third, which then turns into a sax solo... Brilliant! I don't like sax in general, but Gong is one big exception. (others are the mind blowing reeds of early KC and perfect wind section of VdGG, of course!) And then there's the sexy voice of Gilli Smith... I believe she's only second to Annie Haslam in prog scene (and I don't know if there exists any other!) The song appears in Peel Sessions album under the name Zero the Hero and the Orgasm witch! The improvisation goes along with guitar lines, and there's superb drumming! And the least I care about Gong is the lyrics, though they are very entertaining. Whish I was a native speaker and enjoy it all through. |

Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret:
Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!) |

My all-time favourite Gong track is "Castle In The Clouds" (Angel's Egg). "Flying Teapot" is excellent too, and to complete my top 3, I'd add from "Outer Temple" to "Love Is What Y Make It", which seem to segue into a single track. I would add "Flute Salad", but that would mean having to include "Oily Way", which I'm not keen on...

CrazyDiamond, "in the whole discography" is truly saying something. Even on the official Gong homepage (http://www.planetgong.co.uk/ ) they admit that the discography is probably faulty and incomplete. |
