Erm, this was a joke. Mick Pointer, best drummer? It would be like me saying that John Petrucci is the most retrained guitarist, or that Trouserpress just isn't funny.
...kinda sad that I actually SAID it was a joke in the thread several
times, but there are less than a handful of people who actually "heard"
me. Reading skills are good.
Anyhow, 1500 posts, I love Progarchives, how's everyone doing?

Is this a joke? As soon as I saw the thread topic I assumed it was a joke.
How can Mick, who does alright with Arena, but isn't exactly a drummer's drummer, do "everything that Peart can do and so much more?" Awfully presumptuous, aren't we? Are you fully aware of the extent of Neil's ability? He's actually a better drummer now than he was ten years ago. His technique got a nice overhaul under the direction of Freddie Gruber, who's also worked with Steve Smith (Vital Information, Journey) and others.

I suppose you've never seen Pointer at a drum-clinic? He was
playing polymetrics and polyrhythms that would make Tomas Haake cry

Christian Vander is! (imo)!!

Due to me not being a musician, it's hard to distinguish drummers on grounds of ability, unless they are absolutely hopeless, which they rarely are in progressive rock. But Magma's Christian Vander is truly beyond comparison, not only an amazingly technically gifted and versatile drummer, Christian Vander is, besides being a great drummer, also composer and main figure in his band, very unusual for the drummer! In his compositions, drumming (of course) plays a major role, his playing really drives the whole thing forward, really the most important instrument in Magma, he’s so much more than just a drummer!

I'm in the USA. Mick Pointer doesn't give drum clinics over here. And honestly, there's nothing he can do that the likes of Peart, Donati, Portnoy, Chambers, Cobham, Palmer, etc., can't do better. I think you're just Mick's PR guy.

No, Keith Moon blows. Sorry. Even though he was fairly influential (including to Bonham). I don't like his playing.
Buddy Rich, Billy Cobham, Elvin Jones, Mike Portnoy, John Bonham are your best bets for kicking ass at the drum set
He he, I forgot about Akira Jimbo. Pretty kick ass drummer, too.

I like Marco Minneman and Thomas Lang a lot. I'll check out Arena and see how Pointer is. Virgil Donati is also a Monster. Now for you drummers, what do you think of Akira Jimbo and his ability to play the melody and rythm at the same time. Saw him at a clinic in Baltimore and Dennis Chambers was shaking his head in disbelief. Very impressive guy...

This thread is a joke right? i have never seen such an incredibly average drummer, ever. I saw Arena and it felt like he was playing the same 4/4 beat the WHOLE time, all I could think was "when is he gonna do something different?". He didn't. Marillion knew he was not enough to get them into the big league, his drumming (especially on the EP w/Grendel) was very dubious, always seeming 'hesitant' to me, not precise and confident. Like Peart, Collins, Bruford, Portnoy, Bozzio etc.
I agree about Dave Lombardo, probably THE most underrated drummer on the planet, simply because so many people don't get Slayer. I met him in the coffee store just inside Mandalay Bay last december just before Slayer's Vegas gig, what a nice guy. There with his wife and kid!

It's on hold... got me
permit, then my car broke down, and the school's across the
state... me mate Pam needs to hurry up and pass her exam, so she
can give me rides. I passed the exam with a near-100% the first time, dunno why she's failed hers twice...
But as soon as I can get a steady ride up there, it'll be a few weeks,
and then I'll be on the road and likely NOT getting another 1500 posts.
