I consider it Prog... an early stage of prog. ITCOTCK wouldnt have
happened in 69/70 if it wasnt for SPLHCB, so at least opened the doors
for prog music... maybe

It can be a proto-prog album.

kind of. it's still very poppy, but has some very unusual pieces in it. it was influential though, no doubt.

The Beatles were one of the first bands to try and progress within the pop/rock format by bringing in elements of folk, world music, musichall and avant garde and creating a melting pot which was like nothing ever heard before. I'd argue this process started with 'Rubber Soul'- just compare the sound of that with the previous album 'Help' to see how much experimenting and maturity had developed. However, all of their albums from 'Rubber Soul' still sound progressive to these ears- so yeah, 'Sgt Peppers' is very much a prog album.

It was the most "progressive" album ever heard at it's time of release. Now, I would say no. "A Day in the Life" is still pretty earth-shattering, but overall The Beatles aren't really prog as such.

Abbey Road is more proto-proggish imo. Sgt. Peppers is still a fantastic album tho.

I think it is very progy, many diffrent sounding styles mixed toghter and a great flow, you know it doesen need to be complex to be prog, prog to me is more a feeling, and SGT pepper is probobly one of the first pop-prog albums I also think that Highway 61-revisited by Dylan is very progresiv.

But i whuld say the first prog album is Revolver, groundbraking music to me = Prog.
