IQ by a smidgeon over Marillion and Pendragon.

IQ have made several superb albums, but Ever, The Wake, Subterranea and the incredible Road of Bones are my favourites.
Marillion made four superb albums from Fugazi to Seasons End, which is my favourite of all.
Pendragon's three albums from The Window of Life to Not of this World are superb, but The Masquerade Overture is the best.

Truthfully, every band on that list has made good albums.

my two faves from this list are

Marillion & Echolyn

I don't think of Echolyn as neo, but whatever

I'll vote for Echolyn

Marillion, easy choice for me

this poll is missing some great neo-prog bands like

Arena
Satellite
Galahad
Jadis
Airbag
Sylvan

Echolyn, TFK and Spock's Beard are not neo-prog bands if you ask me, but anyway...

Airbag or Wobbler. Or Magenta. Definitely none of those on the list above.

Both Spock's Beard and the Flower Kings would have been in the running but they are listed as Symphonic rather than Neo.  Disapprove  Marillion is worth consideration but I am only interested in the early Fish years and there are only a few releases of that, not counting live albums.  The only other band that I have interest in that fits is IQ, a tremendous band who have done some of their best work on their more recent releases.

I consider flower kings  Retro symphonic prog ... if there is such a thing  Approve  the reason why is The Flower Kings were clearly aiming to recapture that retro prog feel .. I remember when I first ever heard the Flower Kings  back in about  1998  .. I couldn't believe it !  I was seriously impressed with how close to the fathers of prog they sounded.

Posted By: Enchant X

I think the big difference with symphonic prog and Neo prog is Symphonic prog bands tend to combine more analogue Keyboards in their sound and also the date stamp , not sure when neo was invented but many claim Marillion's Script for a jesters tear kicked it off ... I trace it back to Eloy Oceans  .. 1977 ? I think my ears definitely detect the Neo prog sound from listening to Eloy first. I  give Eloy credit for inventing something that nobody else ever has (to my knowledge) ... Neo Prog.

Not on the list, but Magenta. Some of the names listed strike me as more 'symphonic' - ( I don't have anything by Citizen Cain, It Bites or Solstice) - but most of the others are on-par for me. Maybe a very close run between I.Q. and Pendragon.
To me, and I really never considered Genesis as 'sympho' ( just straight 'Prog' to me - whatever you take that to be), but I've never liked this 'Neo' tag to be honest, so................. f**k knows, probably Pendragon for me at the moment, but it can shift between I.Q., Marillion or Spock's Beard. Can't decide.........

For me it's a three-way tie between IQ, Pendragon, and Pallas. However, while I like more albums by IQ then the other two, Pallas's 'The Dreams of Men' and 'XXV' are simply masterpieces. Still need to hear the new album by them.

So Pallas for me.

The Dreams of Men is one of my favourite modern prog albums of any genre. I don't know enough about Pallas though .The Sentinel seems highly rated, how does that stand up alongside their modern albums? (sorry if this is not meant to be a discussion about neo prog in general)

Absolutely correct.

IQ, Pendragon and Marillion are just symphonic bands who emerged in the early 80s. Let's start to call them "neo-symphonic prog". We can then call Spock's Beard and The Flower Kings "neo-neo-symphonic prog".

Or let's just call them all "symphonic" and have done with it.

I never saw IZZ or Echolyn as Neo Prog which is more of a British/European phenomenon than an American one. Then again, Discipline were for a long time labelled as Neo, and a very interesting (and hard to pinpoint) band such as Sanguine Hum are currently filed under Neo on this site.

In my view, IZZ are one of those bands that must be experienced on stage to fully appreciate them. Their studio albums never did a lot for me, but when I saw them live twice in 2013 I was very impressed. Very nice bunch of guys and gals as well.

Posted By: micky
Date Posted: March 06 2015 at 07:31
someone upstream made the point that Neo-prog could easily be seen as 'modern' symphonic prog. I suppose it is easy to do. Note the case of Discipline.  Neo-prog?  I suppose.  Two sides of the same coin.

Why else would the OP have put the f**king flower kings as an option.

In a similar vein, but nicer in my opinion, are Special Providence, a band from Hungary. I got to hear some tracks from their new album recently, and they really are solid. There is definitely a jazz influence in their music too, pretty much as for IZZ, though SP are more to my liking.

Funnily enough the same criticism has been levelled at Pete Nicholls as being 'whiney'. A lot of neo has this type of emotive singing. It goes with the territory

Don't get me wrong, I love h-Marillion - but sometimes h does get carried away a bit for my liking, i guess he just gets caught up in the moment - still, he does have a great voice and writes clever lyrics.
I've never thought Nicholls overdoes his singing. And I probably love I.Q. a bit more than Marillion.

I was in on the UK neo-prog movement and Solstice were by far the best of the live acts - I used to travel regularly to see them.  Of the US contenders, then Spocks Beard the most accomplished (good live too).  Solstice suffered from a poorly produced/distributed debut album which they never seemed to recover from.

The Jewel is my favorite prog album by far.

I guess I didn't question the categorization, I just voted for the band I liked best - The Flower Kings.  Maybe the thing I like best about Progressive Rock is lyrics that want to say something significant.  Unfold the Future, Stardust We Are, Space Revolver, and their many other albums have always had weak moments, but I think they have some of the best long-form compositions of the last 20 years.

IQ is the most consistent neo prog band from the list  , and Ever is my choice as best album from them together with The seventh house and The wake <---- good point Tongue

Very tough choice. Today I say Spock's Beard. Tomorrow I might say IQ. If you would have asked me last week I might have said Marillion ;-)
