Most would agree that this is the big three.
But which is the best one?
I will start the ball rolling by voting for Genesis (though, like everyone else - I suspect, I love the other two bands dearly).

PF gets my vote. I really like Yes though, and there are only a handful of songs I like from Genesis.

Big three what? Album sales? Most commercially successful non-prog albums? Personal preference?

Big three what? I certainly wouldn't put PF above either King Crimson or ELP if it's the Big Three Progressive Originals. But for this list I'd put Yes at the top.

Yes. They are the greatest. The way I usually put it are the big four, being these three and King Crimson. I also sometimes have a minor big four catagory under these four, being ELP, Jethro Tull, Rush, and The Moody Blues AND under these four are Frank Zappa, Camel, Gentle Giant, and VDGG. Newer prog is its own catagory.

Not easy from this group, but for me Floyd. If King Crimson were included as big four, it would easily get my vote over the other three.

Yes has the brightest moments for me, but PF has such a volume of strong material. So, PF wins in the end.

1 Genesis 2 Floyd 3 Yes
These are the big three beyond a doubt, though you could make a case for adding Tull as a 4th. They have an appeal way beyond the prog fraternity, which bands like KC simply don't.

From this list
1.- Genesis 2.- Pink Floyd 3.- Yes
If ELP was in the list
1.- Genesis 2.- Pink Floyd 3.- ELP 4.- Yes
If Jethro was 1.- Genesis 2.- Pink Floyd 3.- Jethro Tull 4.- ELP 5.- Yes
If King Crimson was here
1.- Genesis 2.- Pink Floyd 3.- Jethro Tull 4.- ELP 5.- Yes 6.- King Crimson
This are the usually considered big 6
BUT
Of course that there are many bands that I would put right after Genesis, like Kansas, Anglagard, Steve Hackett, Magma, PFM, Banco, etc
There are even more I would place after Pink Floyd, like Triumvirat, Rick Wakeman, Focus, Par Lindh Project
Like 10 I would place before ELP
Like 20 more I would place before Yes
Like 100 I would place before King Crimson.
But that's my taste.

This I can vote on!
Pink Floyd without hesitation. A huge musical influence to me. Yes and Genesis were very big as well but not huge. There are so many memories of hearing Floyd music for the first time from Umma Gumma and Atom Heart Mother to DSOTM and Wish You Were Here. I have seen Yes and Genesis twice each in concert. I have seen Pink Floyd five times.

Depends on the album. Yes has recorded more albums, and when you have more, as opposed to less, there rises...well, you know what I mean. You can end up with more crap.

If you take it up to 1980 then its a dead heat between Yes and Genesis for me while Pink Floyd would only just scrape into my top ten favourite bands in that period. Beyond 1980 I do find that Yes made some albums that I still want to listen to plus a superb DVD with orchestra. Floyd just became a pastiche of themselves and Genesis ended up making pop albums with some prog on them although Domino and Fading Lights were great late efforts admittedly. My heart though always goes with Yes. Even if they did 'pop' it still had some weight to it. There are still some nice keyboards even on The Big Generator! In summation: Yes> Genesis>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Pink Floyd

Agree up to a point when you look at the progression in sound from the great Yes--The Yes ALbum, Fragile, CTTE, Tales, Relayer, GFTO---no one in prog really comes close in the development of sound. Genesis however were more consistent song writers--but way less experimental.

From a commercial stand point (units sold) the poll is probably correct (not sure if Rush might sneak in ahead of Yes though). Artistically its entirely subjective Gentle Giant King Crimson plus one other

This 'big three' is valid from about 1975, until then ELP took the place of Genesis. Seems churlish to vote on this one because of the importance of these bands in the development of prog.

I would say 90125 trumps anything Genesis released after Duke, Big Generator is weak, but still has some better songs than Genesis, IT and WCD but overall based on their output between 1970 - 1980 Genesis win hands down for me.

Genesis got my vote due to process of elimination. With Pink Floyd I'm basically into the Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals period. I've never been much into Yes. It's a combination of vocals and too much radio play back then.
