I admit to not being up on the stoner/doom/heavy psych rock genres, but if it needs any of the sound I imagine then it's gotta be the Hammond. Nothing screams DOOM or STONER or PSYCH like it.

To me, stoner rock, like heavy metal, doom metal, thrash, etc. is built around heavily distorted "crunch" guitar.
A full blown rhythm section is a must, add two guitars doing power chords and fills.
Then add a vocalist with a killer set of pipes and an attitude that can keep up with the band I just described.

Sludgey bass and muffled drums. I don't really have much in the way of Stoner, but I think the Architectural Metaphor album I have fits the bill quite nicely.

I don't think of Kyuss, Orange Goblin etc. as something separate from the heavier end of 1960s/1970s psychedelic rock as exemplified by Blue Cheer, Cream, Hendrix etc. At worst it's a modern reconstruction but I don't think it's a separate culture.

Exactly what I think for nearly 20 years (and I'm not sure serious rock and metal critics will all disagree).

Fun fact: in an interview for the French magazine Noise published last year, French band Mars Red Sky dismissed the "stoner rock" label to describe their music and prefered to call themselves a "psychedelic heavy-rock band".

Stoner rock is Black Sabbath during their first four albums.

Stoner Rock is people TRYING to be Black Sabbath in their first four album.

I like the sound of the bands, but they forget to improve themselves, with another range of instruments and sounds ans stuff.

One band that managed to do it: Blood Ceremony - its stoner, has flute, violon, acoustic songs, etc etc etc...

There are still paths to discover in the Stoner genre, but few artists have done anything than the usual.
