Here is a link to my top favorite albums of all time, any genre, but mostly prog. that's why I posted this on this site. I'm still young and I have many albums to get, so the list will probably change a lot. Tell me what you think.

This is also a thread for you to post your top albums of all time, any genre or just prog. I'm always looking for new albums to discover. I used allmusic to make my list. You can use any site you want or just type them down, doesn't matter to me.

Great list! I was into most of the same albums when I was in my early twenties (I'm currently 29). Personally I've never been a big fan of The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan but I've listened to all of their albums that you have on the list. Really great to see a few hidden gems like Khan and Nektar there as well.

I asked progfreak to spit out 100, but it spit out 200 instead.  Ordering and inclusion/exclusion are based on ranking that I have given over the years.  I suspect that there are a number of albums that I probably like more but have rated less and there are some on this list that I probably rated higher than maybe I would if I were comparing them to other albums on the list.  Take it as you will, but maybe there are some nice albums listed within that you might discover.

Amarok, IMHO, is in the upper echelon of Oldfield albums, but many do consider it an acquired taste. It just depends how much you appreciate Margaret Thatcher's dancing.

I could never do this.  After the first 3, it would be "so what mood am I in today?" and the list would immediately turn into something I could never replicate.

You all must have very consistent tastes.

well.. considering it took like 15 minutes to whip up my list. And in a pretty good order as to the way I feel about the albums.  100 albums is nothing man.  If you have been listening to music, grown up with it, unless you are from the kiddie brigade, you have decades and decades of forming strong passionate attachments to albums.

As far as tastes.. 99% of what I listen to today is not on that list.  However minus a very few albums it will take many years to crack a top 100 list.  I nearly put the recent UT Gret album on there, and would have if I had taken it out to 150. If I spend another year, listening to that as I have the last year, with great regularity. Several times a week.. then it would likely crack a top 100 list.

that is what I have always adored about the general vibe of 80's music.. it was so damn happy and optimistic. Perfect soundtrack to youth.. all doors were open and anything possible.

Like one of my altime favories.. man if you aren't smiling and movin' your ass. You have no heart and likely have a large branch jammed deeply in your ass.

That's what my dad always says to me about '80's music, Mick, that it was so happy and kickin' and so much of a blast. And it does in fact hold up so well after all these years.

While a third of your other albums would make my list and those two wouldn't. Those stood out because my first concert was a festival back in '85 that had both bands. (The other bands were R.E.M. - who would be in my top 100 with Document or Reckoning, the Cars - debut album in my top 100, and Berlin.) Order of bands was R.E.M., Berlin, Ratt (might have those two mixed up), Huey Lewis, and the Cars.

and why many of us so 'got' what later came in the 90's.  Like our parents, of the 60's, we soon learned 'disillusionment'. Where that optimism went straight into the sh*tter.  I know I learned quickly that life isn't particularly peachy and happy.

Hey man I got Tommy, Quadrophenia and Who's Next on my list.

Just put The The Who's Live at Leeds and your fine.
Maybe Quad if you're a real fan.

Not exaclty a die hard fan, no. But eventually I will check out.

Interesting list of Dark Elf, really like it.

My list (still mading) would certainly count with a few brazilians and maybe from other countries (Aphrodites Child 666 and maybe a Yugoslavian album), not that you guys didnt put it, I'am just saying. I'am really mading a propaganda for Secos & Molhados and not feeling guilty. For me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7HMjcvOVjo" rel="nofollow - their two first albums should be at any list of better music ever produced.

Thanks, Austin.

The one problem with this kind of list making for me is that I keep forgetting a couple of albums that I love and play a lot but slip through my mind at times when it's time to corral them. But I should have it down pat by now after the umpteenth edit.

Thanks, man! I also saw some great albums in your list which I haven't included.
I'll let you know soon.

As for Steven Stills, I'm still going through his discography and I don't know Manassas yet, or just a bit.
It was not so long ago since I realized that from Crosby Stills Nash & Young it was Steven Stills whose music I liked most.
I tried out his first solo album and loved it.
I let some of it listen to my friends and they were impressed too.
I listened to side 1 of Manassas on Spotify and really loved the first track, an absolute killer track, but I have to check out the rest to see if I like the whole double album.
Because a month and a half ago someone started summer madness polls on the site and I listen to practically nothing else right now than the music in the polls
But Manassas is high on my list, but if I hear you, I can just buy it.

Great list!
Good to see you appreciate Outlaws. A friend of mine introduced me to them.
Jefferson Airplane has also quite some good stuff!
Astral Weeks by Van Morrison is also very good, a unique album.
Bookends by S&G doesn't reach the 30 minutes mark, but it's also very good. I completely forgot S&F in my own list.
Interesting to see that you chose Shootout At The Fantasy Factory in your list. That one is also very good and seems a bit overlooked. But then again, when did Traffic make a bad album?
Oh, you made a little mistake BTW, nr. 39 en 41 are the same album (Ummagumma).
Very diverse list! Clap

thanks Marcel.  Strange. I find the non-prog albums people love to be FAR more interesting. Especially as few bother or can rank them.  To see how prog albums fare against non-prog in well rounded listener's overall preference. I love prog.. but I am far from being a prog fan. I love all kinds of music. I just hang out here for the free booze and broads.

awesome...thanks for the catch. It gives me an excuse to put 101 on the list LOL

I was very happy with my list.. zero edits.. in composition and placement.. yet you did have one I likely did overlook that should have been in mine.

oh yeah.. Traffic didn't make a single bad album.  The title track and Tragic Magic were enough to push that into the top 100.  Some serious flat out heavy proggin on the title track and Rebop is frickin awesome on that.. and Tragic Magic is one of those songs best appreciated with alone in a darkened room with a beautiful lady LOL

Yeah

Interesting choices though. My favorite tracks are the three others that you didn't mention. Quite crazy about them.
But Tragic Magic and SOATFF are very good too.
It must be a good album then. All the tracks are somebody's favorite.

Oh ya did!! Lol get FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM's ELIZIUM on there.

Yup you got me there Nick. Either way I'm probably like the previous poster who finds it hard to conjure up something definitive. Just by looking through my already existing list, I know I am missing a lot.

Fields Of The Nephilim - Elizium
Aphex Twin - Ambient Vol 1
The Prodigy - Music For The Jilted
Eric Dolphy - Out To Lunch

Stevie Wonder - Innervisions
Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica

Wuuuh I'll stop now. Anyway, this list will automatically change and reboot in 37 seconds.

This is well done.
I would struggle at doing 50 top albums for myself. We all can't be captain MICKEY and whip up a list in 15min.

Over my years loving and appreciating music, slapping definitives on your music is difficult because it's so mood based; however we all have our staples or go to bands that we have as a Mainstay.
I think your ship David, looks amazing.

amen brother!!!! Thumbs Up  in fact... I need to pick my next album.. Let There Be Rock it shall be...oh sh*t.. Raff just went down for a nap and one can NOT play that album, agreed one the greatest rock albums ever made, and not have the amp on less than 10.

that goes later!

I do love Caress of Steel... a guilty pleasure.Embarrassed Of course it is not their best.. but who cares about best... it is what connects.. and what one enjoys..  the campy Rush was so much more enjoyable than serious proggers they soon be... or respectable AOR/Arena Rock  Rush and MTV darlings they become famous for being.LOL

All the tracks are somebody's favorite.

oh yeah..  no ..it wouldn't have made the top 100 if the other tracks wouldn't have been great.

Roll Right Stones is ..well.. as good as anything earlier they did

Evening Blue has a vibe...  a vibe I can't place on anything they did on any other album. Pure Magic.

the only reason it wasn't higher than where I had it was the flat and (hahaha) uninspired closing track from the album

Thanks. I went with strictly rock albums for this list in order to save time compiling. If I were to add non-rock albums, it would've taken seriously longer and would be far more convoluted. So, no Djangology, Muddy Waters at Newport 1960, Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison (or San Quentin, for that matter), Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue and Piano Concerto, J.S. Bach: Goldberg Variations (Glenn Gould), etc.

Oh ya did!! Lol get FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM's ELIZIUM on there.

Yup you got me there Nick. Either way I'm probably like the previous poster who finds it hard to conjure up something definitive. Just by looking through my already existing list, I know I am missing a lot.

Fields Of The Nephilim - Elizium
Aphex Twin - Ambient Vol 1
The Prodigy - Music For The Jilted
Eric Dolphy - Out To Lunch

David Bowie - Low

Stevie Wonder - Innervisions
Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica

Wuuuh I'll stop now. Anyway, this list will automatically change and reboot in 37 seconds.

This is well done.
I would struggle at doing 50 top albums for myself. We all can't be captain MICKEY and whip up a list in 15min.

Over my years loving and appreciating music, slapping definitives on your music is difficult because it's so mood based; however we all have our staples or go to bands that we have as a Mainstay.
I think your ship David, looks amazing.

I dig your ship too Nick. Beautiful mast if you don't mind me saying so.

Damn......just saw that my list is without Michael Jackson's Thriller and this little maniac of an album:

As already mentioned by the both of us - this kind of list making is impossible. Music is never set in stone with me - certainly not in terms of my enjoyment of it. As an example: I simply LOVE Trout Mask Replica - I really do....but it's not a record I enjoy at 8 in the morning following a night of whiskey and smack.
My tastes change on a daily basis, and in the end I have a lot of difficulty in determining "the best" in music. -I mean, I wouldn't know how to compare a Bob Dylan release to say Henry Cow or Gong for that matter. Sure it's all music - just like raw potatoes and seals are food....but how do you compare the two when it's obvious they're so far apart?

It's still fun to do these lists (if you've got the time), because they remind you of all the hidden treasures in your collection and sometimes even encourages you to visit an old friend.

Hey Iluvmarillion, your list is also great!
Glad to see almost the same Split Enz albums in your list (Second Thoughts, mentioned by me, is a reworked version of Mental Notes). Do you also like Corroboree like I do?
