Our classic rock station had "double shots" in the 80s where you could phone in a couple favorites from a band and get them played back to back.  For this poll I paired songs from the same album.  Smile

Weak selection.... I'll go for Genesis, I guess. The Yes pair are ok too.

All of these are good, but it is not hard to give my vote to Rush here.

Asia and GTR were horrific!!

^ I wouldn't say horrific, in fact quite decent, the problem is that their albums are quite uneven.

I remember at the time that despite their stellar line-ups, my mates and I were deeply disappointed with these bands.  It seems that all that mattered to our heroes was commercial success, especially Stateside.  That's probably why the neo-prog movement of the early 80s was so successful as it reconnected the music with the audience...

^ now that you mention it, where's Marillion? No 80s double shots without Marillion?
Joke aside, it's a good poll, let's see some more.

Genesis quite comfortably ahead of Rush.

With Roger Waters gone Pink Floyd became about as exiting as U2. Less - actually. IMO! Total Yawnfest. The rest is terrible as well.

^ Genesis still had a shred of creativity in them which had deserted the rest (including Rush after 'Grace Under Pressure')

Voted Rush but not a big fan of Countdown. I would prefer Losing It / Analog Kid or Losing it / Subdivisions.

Actually, I'd prefer Analog Kid / Digital Man over all of them

The theme of this particular poll was the "classic rock" bands my FM station was playing at the time.  Marillion was not on the playlist.  Also, I wanted to keep the number of choices relatively small, so that we didn't get one of those polls where each choice has one or two votesSmile

Could you ask the radio station to play Atom Heart Mother and Echoes? Tongue

In the 80s they would have hung up on you and then played "Money" and "Another Brick".   However, back in the early 70s that same station absolutely would have played the long tracks as well as obscure album tracks.   The station still exists today, quite similar to the way it was in the 80s, although with very little new music.  Funny how that "classic rock" format was formed and has endured, despite the fact that most people will tell you they hate it.  LOL

Was torn between Rush and Genesis, but went with Rush as Signals became one of favorites by them for some reason.  I think it was when Geddy calmed his vocals down some...

It's better to turn it off then Tongue Mainstream Rock is mostly awful this century, it explains why they keep it classic.

Up until a couple years ago, I had a rock station in my area that always played new music. However, most of it was was boring, cookie cutter rock that was bringing nothing new to the table. When it wasn't that, it was nu-metal with growling vocalists that was mostly unlistenable.

I applauded their desire to play new music but the choices they put on the air were mostly horrible.

I like the Tull album most and they're behind, so they get my vote. On another day I might have picked the Yes duo; the album is mediocre but I like these two songs, particularly Changes.

Beastie/The Clasp, mostly because I never heard either of them on the radio, alone much less together.

Genesis ---2 great songs----tried to listen to 90125 recently and couldn't get thru it---even songs I used to think were ok like the two here--- was like mehErmm

From this list I guess I go with Genesis... but I'm thinking about "Home by the Sea" as the whole thing, parts 1 and 2, as played in the live albums. I would be tempted to vote for Pink Floyd because I really love "On the Turning Away", but "One Slip" not so much (I do like it, but don't love it)... if it had been paired with "Yet Another Movie" then Floyd would have been my choice (though I much prefer both songs on their Delicate Sound of Thunder versions). The Yes songs don't do much for me, but if it had been "Owner of a Lonely Heart" with "Hold On" I would have had a difficult time choosing between them and Genesis.

Same here.  "Shapes" has aged better than 90125 to me, although I can occasionally enjoy 90125.  My prob with 90125 is that many of the songs have such cloying, repetitive choruses.  That isn't quite as big an issue on some of these other releases. Sure there are instances of it but the others have more twists.  Also, I just prefer Banks tendencies to Tony Kaye.

I can take or leave Genesis - Shapes (3 stars at a push) 90125, however is one of the best albums of the 80's IMO, and would probably be in my top 5 Yes albums

It is 'of it's time' I guess, but I still love that sound. That incarnation of the band had run out of good ideas by Big Generator IMO.

One Slip=strong; On the Turning Away=sappy. That negates the pairing here.

I'll go with Genesis with Yes a very close second. Genesis wins because I really like Home by the Sea (both parts!)

Or how about a Marillion pairing? I guess for me it would have to be "Script for a Jester's Tear with Chelsea Monday or Forgotten Sons. Or else, Pseudo Silk Kimono with Kayleigh (though for me both songs together cound as just one song, and I think the Kimono songs is the more important part to make Kayleigh such a special song).

Given that the same incarnation of Yes gave us "Endless Dream" in the 90's, I would rather say that they still had the best under their sleave (or rather, Trevor's sleave). That's easily my favourite Yes song since "Awaken", and there are indeed a few songs I like a lot in the middle (perhaps Machine Messiah would be the closest to compete with Endless Dream).

For 'Floyd, it's pure sap, tapped as readily as maple syrup from the Vermont woods. You must also be into Dream On and Free Bird.

I like On the Turning Away, I don't find it sappy at all.
The live version on Delicate Sound of Thunder  is even better.

I'll go with Tull on this one, followed by Floyd and Rush. Don't really care about Yes and Genesis 80s work.

"One Slip" is a great overlooked song.

*hiss* Angry.... my review will set the record straight on that album and its songs...

flipping a coin between the Yes and Genesis songs... love all 4 of those. I suppose I like Mama more than most and put it on par.. perhaps not musically but it was still a great song.. as either of those Yes gems.

then again.. perhaps that is why I should vote Yes. Both songs were musically superior to anything any of those other groups did.

so Yes it is....

I would say the same about "Yet Another Movie" from the same album.
