I cannot vote in you poll, because it lacks the option "Partially prog and good".

IMO their first three albums have a lot of progressive songs (Queen I, Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack), and Queen II can be called a Prog album. As a band, they don't belong here. But Queen II must be here.

Great band, borderline prog (art rock is a fuzzy subsection).

Aaaagh.

A good pop/rock band, who used a lot of progressive moves on their first
few albums. Then again, so did many heavy-ish rock bands in the early
seventies. Definitely not prog, in my view.

just because a band has progressive albums or songs does not make that band progressive.

you've got to have an opinion as to how many albums or songs it takes to be able to be

called progressive or not

Well, one complete album is a good start, and this rule seems to be the one used by the admins ... but there are exceptions to every rule ...

I'll keep this short and sweet:

1) Queen are the best rock band ever.
2) Their early albums (from Queen to A Day at the Races) fit my personal idea of Art-Rock, so I see no inconvinient in having them here.

Not all particularly prog, though they have their moments. Don't care if they are or aren't included here.
Mostly unexceptional (not bad, just not my thing, too many guitars and feeble harmonies), though they have their moments (Bohemian Rhapsody, Killer Queen, Who Wants To Live Forever, Innuendo are all great)

Not 100 % Prog, and very very good up to and including the year 1978. After that they got less interesting, though still pretty good.

They are 'Prog Related'

I think the categorisation on this site is spot on with regard to Queen. They are not all out prog, but have made some albums/songs which have fused genres and styles and have elements of experimentation.

Whether you like them or not, I'm surprised you needed to ask...

I'd say a lot of their stuff up until News of The World had prog elements, and if its not prog its still progressive, which is not the same thing, of course.

And I love queen, every member knew how to write a good song, and they were excellent musicians with a unique sound.

My favorite albums from them are Sheer Heart Attack and Night at the Opera.

that's generous. I've always seen their work as "Killer Queen" followed by a desolate failmine

I'm not really certain about where Queen really stands genre wise, I find the classification of prog to be very fuzzy and broad.

Queen certainly have songs that sound prog, The Prophets Song comes to mind.

But either way, they're such a unique and diverse band, I think prog would actually be too much of a limiting term for them, and they have a mass appeal that no other prog band has (save Pink Floyd, if you consider them prog)... More than anything they're just another band to pigeonhole into the art rock (or crossover prog or whatever you call it now) or prog related category along with Led Zeppelin and whatever.

I'd say they're good where they're at, listed as prog related on the archives, Steve Howe played on Inuendo afterall. But then again Howe has also played for Lou Reed. LOL

You could put the option "Queen II and bad"

Subjectively, you don't want to know my opinion..
Being somehow objective, they're good, but not prog.

My true opinion is they su**, but that's just a personal matter, as I said, they have good rock stuff, but really before getting to them, that IMO they're 2nd category of hard rock, I highly prefer Deep Purple and kings of the genre, before the queens of it

"Prophet's Song" off "A Day at the Races" is quite simply one of the best prog tracks ever recorded. That's enough for me. Are the majority of their songs prog? Probably not. But most of the material they put out after "Jazz" was inferior and the first four albums were definitely more prog than not, in my book.

I went with not prog and good. I like their earlier works. Like most bands they ran out of material and just made music for either commitments or money. I miss the days of their first 4 albums. Good band live. I caught their tour for Queen II. Good show, good music.

But you are being objective by saying they suck , so there is no big deal.I know that the band has many fanboys that wont accept it.I once was banned from a forum becouse I said they suck.

The question is : What do they suck?

They are good. Generally non-prog with the exception of their best albums, which can be considered prog, but generally, thay aren't prog, so option 3 for me.

Difficult to categorize. But no one can deny they are a great band.

Hey Prog Archive!
I am looking for a Queen song, not sure what it is or what any of the lyrics are. I heard it very faintly as I was passing by a store. It is a very quiet, piano driven song, at least toward the end when I heard it. It has quiet lead vocals by Freddie Mercury accented in a  call-and-response-style by the rest of the band in the signature Queen backup vocals. It isn't on "A night at the opera" and I hope from this information given I could get some help in naming this song.
Any help is appreciated,
Austin

They have some prog songs like the aforementioned "Prophet's Song", but to me they are more arena rock and with the worst qualities of that appellation - the grandstanding, the pompousness, the seeming disdain for their audience, not to mention that they produced some of the worst hits ever, like "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and "Another One Bites the Dust"

in my opinion They cant be classed as not prog! Jazz and classical influences coming out the ears, extened compositions And they used certain studio techniques before any others!

Progressive and AMAZING

^Indeed, many of their compositions leave most so-called Prog bands crying in the dust. The entireity of QII, for example.

Then there's Hot Space, admittedly...

of course it's not progressive.

Queen is a great band. Queen II could be considered prog as an album but Queen's prog moments are too few to put the band in the prog catagory. They even had some prog moments on later albums, Dragon Attack comes to mind but still not enough of them to be prog.

I fail to see how three albums worth is too few prog moments, when some bands in the archives haven't even released that many albums!

Surely one album of great prog (QII) is enough?
