Three Canterbury albums that I quite enjoy. Also happens to be three albums that I'm currently trying to pick between to see which one I should buy next, so perhaps you could all help out a little with that decision. I'll go with Mainstream. Superbly well-crafted jazz fusion with an always delightful Canterbury flavour. Fish Rising is really enjoyable but doesn't bring anything new to the table after the first Gong albums and Space Shanty. I'm not too crazy about The Rotter's Club either but then again it took me quite a while to start digging the debut H&TN. ------------- "Larks' tongues. Wrens' livers. Chaffinch brains. Quiet Sun for me. Had it been the Hatfield debut, it would have been a much harder choice for me. ------------- Categories strain, crack and sometimes break, under their burden - step out of the space provided. |

I have all three on vinyl and enjoy them all. I bought Hillage first then H&tN and finally Quiet Sun. I play Fish Rising the most so voted for it. |

One might say that this is a very mainstream Canterbury poll (groans all around I presume). I voted for The Rotter's Club over Mainstream, but I do like both very much. Like some others, I also prefer Hatfield's debut album. I'm not a big fan of Fish Rising (for a related work, I much prefer Khan's Space Shanty). I used to think that it's the kind of Canterbury scene album (along with Caravan albums) that is likely to appeal to a non-Canterbury scene/sound audience and less likely to be lauded by Canterbury Scene aficionados, but that does sound snobbish and I don't claim the accuracy of what had crossed my mind. I should check it out again. It has been years since I last listened to it (it was an early purchase of mine when I was exploring Canterbury). ------------- Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me. |

^I agree about Fish Rising....Space Shanty is a better and more interesting work imho. I personally like Rotters better than the debut Hatfield...not sure why...it just appeals to me more....but both are superb. Quiet Sun's Mainstream is a solid album but imho lacks the joie de vie that the Hatfield albums have. ------------- One does nothing yet nothing is left undone. Haquin |

| Personally I prefer Fish Rising, but the other two are good as well and as above, Space Shanty and Rotters are also good. Personal taste is the decider here so get all five albums. |

Thanks a ton for the votes and discussion, everyone. Looks like Rotter's Club has won by a pretty fair margin, so it should be on my shopping list in the near future. Hatfield and the North is one band I wish had released more albums. Their work is so stunning and intricate. Where the band got their ideas from is anybody's guess, but the lyrics are so amusing and a little Cheeky/naughty in places. I have always loved both of Hatfield's albums.  Both are perfect desert Island discs.Quiet sun, another classic. Again a band I would love to have heard more from.

I love all of these but lean slightly more towards Hatfield and Hillage. I voted for the latter this time. Aftaglid has one of the most confounding and unnatural guitar riffs ever to grace a rock track. It's like Hillage purposely sets out to play all the surrounding chords to the factually "right" ones, so as you get...erm suggested a melody or a groove but your brain has to sort out how to insert it in the music.
