I see a lot of elderly folk complain about the current state of things.
'Mayo used to be 2 cents and Burt Reynolds was twice the male role-model Shia Leboeuf is'
Well I largely agree. I think mayo is insanely pricey and I miss old Burt. His moustache was mesmerising and he blew a mean tuba.

Music-wise you're wrong. Sorry peeps but there is literally hundreds of brilliant contemporary bands that make music that sounds like it was produced during the 60s/70s. This thread is for those of you who long for those olden days. Be it prog or not - a little folk rock or some sensuous old timey funk this thread is where you can get it. I hope other members will chime in to give you the lowdown on some of these new cats, because you deserve it. There are far too many things to take care of when one gets to be a certain age. There's the lawn. You probably also got a fence or two. Maybe a longhaired unshaven dog. Four kids. A salamander. Scolding young rascals for skateboarding on the pavement. Oh yes, I know your troubles alright. Well just sit back and enjoy the upcoming feast of sounds. It will probably not be as exciting as back when you still had your hair, but we sadly can't provide any experimental substances to accompany this trip (I have exhausted all available thread options and it's sadly a no-go).

First off I'd like to start out with a Dutchman. You don't say?
Jacco Gardner should be a well-known artist among people over 50...but he's not because...well nobody has heard of him. Psychedelic baroque art poppy goodness with a slice of rock in the mix:

For a funky good ol time and perhaps a chance to boogie down with the missus, I heartily recommend the fantastic Budos Band. Also the safest bet for any party. Trust me on this:

I think I'll round off with a little folk rock from the tall grasses. This one should please Tim Buckley fans BIG TIME. It sure impressed me. A perfect morning album and to make it even better take it outside in the garden whilst the sun is getting up. Birds will thank you:

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

Ahh Jose my friend good to see you. Just so happens that I have what you crave for. You know me I'm big on Funkadelic as well and was absolutely thrilled to hear a new album from this year that sorta sounds like the bass groove and soulful vocals of Funkadelic yet spliced up with a distinct early Santana flavour (I definitely hear Rollie in the organ!): Chicano Batman's Freedom is Free (how can you possibly go wrong with a name like that?). Trust me you'll thank me later.

I am really digging the sounds and style of Chaz Bundik lately. A shameless throwback act but it sounds wonderful nonetheless. I got this album a little while back, but it's only here recently I've started listening to it.

Oh and Jose. You should check out The Budos Band which I mentioned earlier. Really lowdown funky vibes completely free of vocals (I think?).

Staying in the vicinity of funk I'll add some rather addictive psychedelic soul a la Marvin Gaye or The Temptations anno 1973:

The very short studio version is not really satisfying after knowing this one.

I wish you hadn't posted that Samuel

Nahh I still love Häxan to bits even if this version is superior to the one found on the album.
Now that I think of it, every Dungen album probably deserves its own spot in this thread. They certainly got the warm analogue production down by now. I especially adore the way the drums sound.

This was made in the 90s and it's so retro that it's even more retro than real retro (60s/70s). xD

Thee Oh Sees from San Francisco are an old school garage/psych band that’s been getting proggier lately. This brand new album has them recording under a former name, OCS, and dialing down the noise for a very evocative, quietly psychedelic folk rock album with tasteful orchestration. I bought it last weekend and it takes me back to the late 60s everytime I play it. These folks really understand this music.

All nice and well, but let me ask a metaphorical question: Why should an art collector go for modern painters who paint in the style of the Baroque Period when there are so many obscure artists from that period missing in his collection?

Jean and I found over a hundred artists we had not even heard the names of in just three days of research, with only one or at the most two albums, many of them not in the archives and probably without a chance to be added because there has been quite a stickler policy here lately. And we consider ourselves to be pretty knowledgeable about this period.

For example: We discovered this beautiful little gem from 1968 which Jean asked for addition of, and there has not even been a reply to her post yet though she made it several weeks ago!

And here a link to her post:

^ a fair question, to which I would say, there’s time for both. New artists drawing upon old styles can still be worthwhile, and they aren’t necessarily carbon copies of the “real” stuff, and can often have a fresh perspective of their own. These days, new bands can release all kinds of stuff without any particular commercial potential, yet still have enough of an audience to make it feasible for them - the result being a broad range of ideas getting studio time, getting released, and somehow finding its audience. Lots of it may suck, but some of it is really great.   And of course I place equal (or greater) value on the obscure old stuff too. Again, I want all of it, and I’ve still got a few good years left in my life to seek it out.

That Lily & Maria sounds pretty sweet too, thanks for that!

I see this thread is still going, nice one.
I think there is room for both old and new, but I feel it is more important to support bands that are active right this minute over bands that haven't existed for 45 years.
I've come across hundreds of those sort of completely under the radar psych gems and some of them are actually pretty damn good. There's however no chance for me to go see them live...let alone buy a copy of their album, but I love the fact that the music is out there on YouTube. Like Lily & Maria, thanks, that was pretty nice.

Did you guys throw the suggestion directly to the folk team's thread? If not then it probably got buried in an avalanche of other suggestions. Take a look at that part of the forum, it's insurmountable.

1. Because despite being inspired by the classics, it's still good and has a similar emotional quality to it
2. Nostalgia

I like the idea of taking some kinda zeigeist and expanding on it. Now, let's make this clear. I'm not a huge fan of downright copying the sound cause that's pretty much ignoring all the good things that came after. More like incorporating the things that made the vintage music so special into the modern world. On the other hand, there's nothing wrong with copying either when you think of it deeper. Especially if the reproduction is so well done, it's a form of art in and of itself. The art of capturing that particular sound.
