These are three of my favourite albums in the JRF category. I would vote for all three if I could, but since I can't, I will vote for Crossings. ------------- Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me. |

Sextant is an incredibly fascinating and engaging album... yet it comes in third for me, which is testament to just how creative Herbie is in this period... and how dynamic are the other members of his sextet. Tough choice between the other two, but Crossings wins by just a hair. In addition to all its other qualities, it is one of the most rhythmically engaging albums of all time. But I do love Eddie Henderson's trumpet work on Mwandishi. |

Tough choice between Sextant and Crossings Went for the latter (Sextant), because of Gleason's electronic gadgetry.

Ever since I discovered Crossings which must be about 15 years ago - just before it had its small renaissance, its been a favourite... if not the favourite album of mine. Its the most wondrous sonical universe to visit and i can never get enough of it. While its sandwiched between two excellent outings I'll rather bring along the Mwandishi-related trio of Realization, The Jewel in the Lotus, Love, Love with me on that desert island. |

It's between Crossings and Sextant for me, I pick the latter simply for being such an oddball of an album. ------------- Categories strain, crack and sometimes break, under their burden - step out of the space provided. |

Sextant for me as well although I love all three. For a “better” or different take on the debut I strongly recommend folks to check out Bennie Maupin’s A Jewel In The Lotus which builds upon the more acoustic approach of Mwandishi amd then adds a delirious stock of beef and ayahuasca. It's good to know I'm not the only one who has a hard time choosing between these three! Sextant gets the most plays when I'm on the go, only because I have the album in my disc changer in the car. One from each, in order of the releases of the albums: You'll Know When You Get There Quasar Rain Dance And will second and third the recommendations for similar Mwandishi albums and add some more: "Realization" by Eddie Henderson is fantasic, and his Inside Out is also worth checking out, Julian Priester's "Love, Love " is very much loved by me, and Bennie Maupin's "The Jewel in the Lotus" (great album) and "Slow Traffic to the Right" (which has different takes on "Quasar" and "Water Torture" that I love in their own right). Other albums with some similarities worth checking out include Lenny White's Venusian Summer, Norman Connors "Dance of Magic" and "Dark of Light" and Buster William's "Pinnacle" (ages since I heard that last one). ------------- Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. ^ Yep, SUnburst is good too.
