Nursery Cryme for me.

I'm voting for Foxtrot but this is really hard. I feel like I'm cheating on "The Musical Box."

Foxtrot is it. Although I love Nursery Cryme almost to the same extent. NC, Foxtrot and SEBTP are the peak of Genesis progressiveness and it's very hard for me to choose among them. But Foxtrot LP was my first one from Genesis back in the '82 or '83 and it has special place in my heart.

Foxtrot. Easy choice. Second best from Genesis after SEbtP

Nursery Cryme is great, but always feels like a tad undercooked Genesis. It's almost there. They hit a unique apex with Foxtrot that even SEBTP doesn't touch for me.

Both great but voted for Nursery Cryme. For one thing I just wanted to shake things up a bit and also despite the fact that NC get's a lot of flack for being badly produced(or having a thin sound)it still seems more consistent to me than Foxtrot. Foxtrot has time table which is nice but not that great and get em out by friday which I like even less. The only thing that puts me off a little on NC is "Harold the Barrel." The rest is pretty stellar. Still, I think both albums are very good.

Fox and tress are B+ or A- albums. Nursery is a C album. Harold, Seven and Harl are just ok at best. Musical box is a 7 minute track with an average verse and chorus
------------- All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Foxtrot. Both albums are terrific works of unmatched atmosphere, but Foxtrot is more polished and advanced, I think. And ten minutes longer!

Foxtrot #2 Nursery Cryme #4 on my all-time top 4500
There is something about those initial listens that stick with you through the years. Although SEBtP may be a better album, these are my favorites.

They were for me! After hearing Trick of the Tail at a friends house, I went to the local Music Plus and found "The Best..." in the cutout bin. It had both albums as a fold-out double record!

Foxtrot wins, especially because of Supper's Ready.
Supper's Ready wins, especially for the lines: "Six six six is no longer alone; he's getting out the marrow in your backbone; the seven trumpets blowing sweet rock and roll; gonna blow right down inside your soul; Pythagorus with the looking glass reflects the full moon; in blood he's writing the lyrics of a brand new tune..."

Even if Foxtrot didn't include Supper's Ready, I'd still find it quite a close call, as the first side of Foxtrot is still downright amazing, showing Genesis at some of their most mature, where I felt that Nursery Cryme could feel slightly underdeveloped at a couple of points. Supper's Ready however puts Foxtrot much higher for me, so I'll go for that.

Return of the Giant Hogweed and Fountain of Salmacis are excellent, but the rest of Nursery Crime - while great - is not quite as good as the main tracks on Foxtrot in my opinion.

Agreed,. Supper's Ready just puts it over the top. The album is absolutely perfect. Top tier progressive rock of the highest caliber, and still more perfect than SEBTP for me personally.

I'm glad someone else agrees; I almost got roasted a year or so ago claiming it sounded like someone flipped on "ON" switch on Salmacis (I.E. when Genesis finally "clicked" with their epicness). Fantastic album, but it feels, as you said, underdeveloped relative to what came next.

Oh I much prefer a touch of pastoral romaticism than "gritty" social-commentary/future dystopia in my "symphonic rock". I'll rather Zeuhl/RIO take care of the latter. What some call "mature" comes across as not very original or impressive observations to me. I'd take mellotron-washes, amateur oboe & flute, hermaphrodites, Old King Cole and Fang Son of Great Fang over the harsh barks about directors of Genetic Control in New Harlow Town any day.

Damn this is a hard one. "Supper's Ready" alone makes Foxtrot an essential own, but I find Nursery Cryme to be far more consistent. Ultimately I'm probably going to have to with Foxtrot because the great tracks make up for "Can-Utility and the Coastliners".

The Lamb, Nursery and Foxtrot are the holy trinity of Genesis output.
I'll vote for NC because The Musical Box, Hogweed and Salmacis are evenly spaced and it makes for a more consistent album. But it's really close...Supper's Ready is their best song by far.

For me it's Nursery, Foxtrot, and Selling England. I feel they were already going into a different direction (which I don't enjoy as much) with The Lamb.

That's quite literally what Nursery Cryme sounds like to me (not a bad thing at all, btw). I've always made the joke that Genesis "turned itself ON" during Salmacis, lol. It's like a Disney movie; you can FEEL the magic!
