A simple question
could there be progressive rap?

-------------

when i really dont feel a thing at all

Only as a parody. In fact the band I play in (the Bald Angels) have such a parody on our first album ("Sap Rap"), for which we are still seeking a distributor.

Here a few lines from "Sap Rap":
"If you had one over the eight and still want a night-cap,
then you should better go home and take a nap,
and while you go home better watch your step,
don't try to tango or waltz or even dance tap.
and if you think the lines I'm singing are nothing but crap,
you are completely right, I am a sap

find the song De La Soul - The Grind Date

it uses the sha na na na na, na na na na na na na na thing from Yes - Ritual as the sample for its beat

its quite hilarious

I don't think the people who have responded thus far know much about rap beyond the horrible mainstream artists who aren't at all representitive of the genre... it's not all about gangstas and hos, you know .

As for progressive rap, I don't see what you mean exactly. There's a lot of rap out there that stretches the boundaries of the genre, but I wouldn't call it "prog". Do you just mean rap with elements of prog rock? If so, I'm not sure that would work out too well - although I'd love to hear a rap song in 7/4 with lots of mellotrons and 20 minute guitar solos .

...nice
i myself am in a rap "group"
me and a pal make rap songs, and i consider it to be completley different from the mainstream Mike Jones, 50, and Kanye West type rap
somewhat of a progressive rap, or at least i think so

and when i say prog rap i mean like odd time signatures and instruments not usually used in mainnstream rap songs with odd lyrics as well

hey good luck i hope you succeed,i was berated for having the gall to mention a band i quite like called the insane clown posse,i don't know their politics or anything,i accidently came upon them and downloaded a few songs and liked some of what i heard, however it seems you have to read a bands cv before some folk let you even bring them up

Wish I knew the name of the artist or song (the chorus begins "Where are the weapons of mass destruction..."), but the repeating sample that provides the main melody is a snippet from Kansas' Closet Chronicles. So, yup, prog-rap is possible.

Have you ever listened to Greetings From Mercury ?

This group includes rap vocal. Musically, it may be close to XLS.

hmm- thats the weird thing. When it comes to punk and ska- I know it can be cringe-worthy but I don't mind it as much as I do hip-hop and rap. It's the lack-of talent, vanity and mysoginy that gets to me.  And it lacks electric-guitars!!

I don't think so. Rap is related to other kind of contents. I'm not saying Rap music is bad, but Progressive rap would be somewhat strange, like making a soft drink sandwich or something. So, I would have to say no.

Prog hip hop?

There is of course the genre of trip-hop, which is based on extended jams, advanced turntablism, and in some cases live bands.  I know of a trip hop band called BEAM that consists of a vocalist, turntablist, drummer, upright bassist, and a special effects bassist.  They never play together except when they play live, and they just flow for hours on end.  It really is amazing jazz-influenced hip hop and is definitely progressive in its own right.

also check out DJ shadow.
