Inspired by a comment from another user in the Yes Rate the Album 1-10: Yes "Tales" thread, here we are!
SO...
On a scale of 1-10, what do you rate King Crimson's Larks' Tongues in Aspic?
As always, no half or quarter points; whole points only!
GO!

I don't understand the appeal of this album... 3/10.

That's actually a good first stance to see in this thread, something different for a change! I'll let this one marinade a bit longer.

I like it generally, very creative and crazy but I don't think the album flows as well as some other crimson albums. I kinda like crimson better when the songs have more structure on albums like Court and Red. Decent 7 or a light 4 stars.

Not exactly the album that gives me goosebumps, but it has some good moments. Don't know exactly what I should think about part 1: it seems rather pointless, but it has some mysterious growing potential. 7/10 does this album most justice, I think.

The production is also a problem with too much contrast between the calm and the loudest parts. It has some truly dizzying quality peaks though. Surely a special album. 7-8/10

8/10 for me, primarily on the merits of the title track (part 1 and 2).

I'm glad there's at least one PA member on this thread who agrees with me. I gave the album 4 out of 10, but even that was a stretch. For me, it's definitely an album for the bargain bin, or just the bin. I noticed someone gave the album just 1 point - which seems a bit harsh - but it looks like they want to remain anonymous.

No....you are being generous when you give give 4 and 5 stars to all those old proto prog things which really deserve 3 usually. Did you fall and hit your head a lot as a kid....?

| Aye. I have literally hundreds of unheard cd's. And a lot of them are considered essential, so I bought them. I have to give a release like LTIA a lot of attention, but with over 4000 cd's, that is easier said than done. I have an addiction, and have at least 10 cd's delivered every week...

hmmm. a hard one to rate and this is not a favorite of me or the better half and so don't listen to it much anymore... not the best thing they did by any stretch.. but then again I can't think of too many worse. All their albums had good points.. and weak points. This one..Musically interesting.. vocally very weak.. a 7 sounds good to me.

LTIA/LTIA2 are 10/10 tracks for me.
My only major gripe is the discrepancy in production; the volume and some of the mixing is all over the place.
9/10.

You only get on the wrong side of Fripp if you sneeze during one of his concerts. Then he walks off.

Er...sorry to hear about the 'addiction'. 4,000 cd's.....wow..... ....and I thought the 1,000 I have were too many. Just curious, but why don't you play the cd quickly just once when you first get it... or at least go through the tracks and play a bit to see if it resonates with you? Good luck getting around to those others...

I clicked on the thread to express the polar opposite.
Lying on the floor, lights out, eyes closed, the anticipation and foreboding as Bruford and Muir's percussion cedes to Cross' viola............the escalating menace of the intro to Larks' never fails to evoke shivers. To me, it is a profoundly visceral piece of music.
I love the diversity of the track. The guitar/mellotron maelstrom of evil, the delicacy of the violin solo, the jazz sentiments....
My favourite KC track. Probably my KC favourite album, although that occasionally varies depending on which I'm listening to at the time.

I couldn't agree more. It's the quintessential heavy eclectic progressive rock track. It paved the way for slews of prog metal bands 30 years later. Both parts of the title track inspired entire bands such as Gorguts, Behold The Arctopus, etc.

10 out of 10 for sure. Can never get tired of this incredible platter. Love how there’s some catchiness to some tracks as well as the difficult artworks of the title pieces.

I agree wholeheartedly with this statement...especially those performances with Jamie Muir still in the band.
That was an entirely different level of novelty, not since obtained, nor replicated IMHO, in 1973. The only other contender was Yes w TFTO, but that was equally as novel, just in a completely different (and divisive, lol) direction.
What an untouchable era.

3/10. I've always found it almost unlistenable. (Well it genuinely is for me now, because I divested myself of my KC albums a while ago as I never listened to any of them).
