Do you like wish you were here and animals era Pink Floyd? Then you might like Eloy(the mid to late 70's era anyway). The earlier stuff was slightly more krautrockish though.

Cool. I just checked and they are on spotify if you are a fan of streaming. You can listen to individual songs there. Of course there's also youtube. Their highest rated albums on here I believe are floating, dawn, ocean, silent cries and mighty echoes and planets. Those are usually their most highly recommended ones anyway.

Ocean through to Time To Turn is one hell of an album run that has been rarely bettered. They nailed down tight the whole Space Rock genre thing. The recent stuff is also kick ass as you say.
PT - well okay they are genre re-defining and also amazing but my heart is with Eloy

Not tough at all : Eloy
Although their later work is rather average (with the exception of Ocean 2) their work up till 1982 is excellent and sometimes fabulous. I have never been impressed by PT and always found them unoriginal.

Eloy was my favourite band for quite some time as a teenager but I grew out of them. I still like some of their stuff though and Matziol is a bass genius. Tough poll, I'd say Eloy's best are up with PT's best (that's 3 or 4 by each of them) but PT are more consistent, they haven't done stuff that I hate, and Eloy have some albums that really wind me up the wrong way these days, so PT it is.

Surely a poll asking which of two options one prefers will only ever be a popularity contest?
However, provided everyone who answers, answers honestly (that is, selects a preference only if they are familiar enough with both bands to do so), then I see no reason why the results should be questioned?
It would appear that those who prefer Eloy are more inclined to write a post as well as just vote, but from that you could also infer Eloy were always the underdog here, based upon previous polls in this forum,
Eloy and PT both have some fabulous albums in their discography, but PT is far more consistent. I definitely prefer some Eloy albums over some PT albums, but I prefer PT overall. There is not a PT album that I don’t like, but there are Eloy albums that don’t work for me.
I personally am surprised that Eloy is as competitive as it is here - not just because PT is potentially better known, or more liked, but because most people would agree that their discography is far more patchy than PT’s. 🤷🏻♂️
If there were a poll comparing the most highly rated Eloy album against the most highly rated PT album, then it might be a more level playing field. But I think comparing bands in general, rather than specifically, leads to looking at all they’ve done, and despite any number of highs, or just how high those might be, overall consistency cannot be overlooked.

Consistency is way overrated sadly. Eloy were on a different planet to almost any other band around 80-82. If you y/t stuff around that time they were off the scale for technical brilliance. PT even at their best around 2005 still look desperately average by comparison although they certainly weren't. Yep Eloy have some real stinkers like Ra but who cares about this when you have 7-10 great albums you can listen to?

I voted for "Both equally" because I take delight in both, and one cannot be a "substitute" for the other in any way in my book. I think they can be compared as being well-known prog bands, but essentially the two's fandom have no emotional or intellectual connection, at least for my understanding and taste. Perhaps that's just me though.

Hi,
I have been with ELOY since the very first album on HIPGNOSIS. And while I did not like it as much until "Floating" and then "Power and the Passion" ... for over 20 years, ELOY was far out and very enjoyable and a staple on Guy's radio show always playing the latest.
I never really "got" into PT until 1999, and I did go after a few CD's, but as much as it was very nice, it did not have the "difference" that the German scene, with ELOY had ... PT was not "original" ... but was doing stuff that was very much like the feeling in the olden days ... only for it to be gone as soon as they became "famous" ... !!!
ELOY has almost 50 years in its history, and some outstanding albums ... PT only lived for about 20 plus years before fame distorted them to "trivial" or as SW used to say, he wanted to do something "heavier". The Germans were already "heavy", right from the start!

That just means PT is more your bag, not necessarily that they're the more "consistent" band.
Eloy is consistently good, IMHO. As it's been pointed out, PT's got stuff that sounds average at best, and nothing I rate on par with Eloy's magical 1977-82 period. Eloy really doesn't have an album I find unlistenable, and that includes the much-mailgned Ra.

Ra actually has great songs, just the way they were presented was not the best, but I am glad to look past that. I think that Destinations was their weakest album up to the last few years, more irrelevant than unlistenable though.

Hi,
I was thinking that PT is likely to be more appreciated, as it has a more "modern" sound that is easier on the ears of many listeners, on account of their "conditioning" to a lot of music and its effects from the sound and its quality.
This was not the case when ELOY came out in the 1970's, and their individuality, to my ears, was only duplicated by JANE similarly, although it is easier to say that ELOY was more meaningful in their work than not, with concept albums that actually said something ... and I doubt that PT can, or should, be considered a concept band ... it's mostly over rated and accentuated songs. With heavy on the "accent" and the "loudness", not necessarily the contents!

It really doesn’t mean that at all. Eloy is more my bag, but I can recognise that their discography is not as consistent. If unlistenable is where you set your bar, then that’s up to you. Mine is higher. There’s no Eloy or PT album that is unlistenable for me. There are albums from both bands that don’t do a lot for me, and that I don’t exactly dislike, but nor do I greatly like. But overall, PT has less up and down, and therefore more consistency. I’ve not bothered to check, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see the ratings for PT are more consistent across the board than for Eloy.

When it comes to being unlistenable, Ra is quite the car crash indeed in my view. And I have given it a few chances (admittedly I survived them all ). I can't find strong songwriting there either, let's say there are two tracks that I could have liked with a good production and arrangement, but even them I wouldn't have found them really strong. Eloy without Matze is just a no go.

He made a topic asking to have his account deleted soon after his first comment here, but we don't tend to delete accounts (can cause issues), and instead I suspended his account permanently and banned him. So yeah, he didn't last long at all or try to last. I could understand him being upset by certain remarks made after his first post (of course his first post was likely to be ridiculed), but since David (Guldbamsen) had been quite diplomatic (tongue smiley aside - lol) and explanatory, I felt his attitude was particularly deplorable. He didn't wish to remain a member of this site and this site in turn benefits from his absence.
As for the topic question: I prefer Eloy. I especially like the albums Inside and Floating. I quite like mid-90's PT, and quite enjoyed Deadwing, but never really got into the band.

Thankyou and I take it back. One of my earliest shocks I guess you could say when I discovered Prog was hearing "Ocean" for the first time and actually feeling embarrassed about the strong accent, it just seemed so lame. In time I also got used to them to the point I can put it on without it bothering me. Still prefer the early ones though.
