I have heard almost all of these, and own half of them. There’s a lot of groups I really love, but whose albums released this year were some of my least favourites by the band. In the end, I had to go for Depeche Mode. Yes, Violator is a great album, but I'm hesitating between this one and Queensrÿche's Empire, their second best (imo, of course). The others, as far as I've heard them - about 10 - do not much to me. I don't think I ever heard the a-ha album in full; might try that one some day... Oh, and the balance went in favor of Violator...

I can’t say Empire is my least favourite Queensryche album, because there are several I like less - but it is possibly my least favourite album of theirs that I own. I can’t deny that there are some great songs on it, but I think that’s also why it doesn’t work so much for me. It’s like they went out to write a bunch of songs that were individually very good, without caring too much how they hung together. So even though I might like individual songs from Empire more than individual songs from, say, Hear In The New Frontier, it is the latter album which I enjoy more, as an album. the album tittle is strange. it's "Hear in the Now Frontier". Makes no sense to me. But it's a good album, I do enjoy Empire more though.

I know Emily Remler, I forgot about her.  Gong's album does not count since it's a live show from the 70s, so... I've never explored Christian Vander solo, I might look into it.

Living Colour is my third favourite album from this selection. A great band that is so much more than “just” the band who did Cult of Personality. I went and looked, and I have a lot more 1990 albums in my collection than I thought. I had a feeling that Extreme might be the only one of those you might like. Much of the rest is probably not not much interest to too many on this forum. The only album on that list I've listened to is the Deep Purple one. I must've been on another planet in 1990. I went with Faith Hope Love from King's X. I love that album. A lot of good albums at the beginning of the list again plus Living Color and Iron Maiden are both good albums. That Extreme album might have been a first or second place vote if it had been listed. -------------

not in the poll, but Kreator's Coma of Souls is a great album as well, I wanted to put it but changed my mind. Sanctuary's album is amazing, their best. Annihilators Never, Neverland is excellent, masterpiece if not for the joke song Kraft's Dinner.

Given what I just said in the Sabbath vs Rush poll you bumped, I have to admit that Tyr really isn’t too bad of an album. Not one I would ever have considered voting for in this poll, but not too bad considering how patchy Sabbath’s discography is. If you ask me, Black Sabbath have a pretty solid discography, I've seen worse, much worse. Their weakest albums (IMO) are Born Again and Forbidden, although i dare say they're still listenable.

FWIW I do like Tyr more than Eternal Idol or Headless Cross. In those albums, there was a kinda commercial rock element which didn't blend well with the metal for me. Tyr OTOH evokes the kind of epic metal we would hear more of in the 90s. Not my favourite sub genre but props to Iommi for changing yet again. |
