I deemed it would be proper to take the PA subgenres into consideration while choosing.

If you had to make a decision, which one's (see the options 1-2 above) absence would be more unpleasant?

P.S. You don't have to think it like one of them being wiped out from the surface of the Earth. It can basically be like, you'll only be able to listen to symphonic prog music or the rest of the music belonging to the prog rock genre.

(Leans heavily to Symphonic)

none of these options work for me...

I went with the rest. Leaves me with more selections that I enjoy.

Although Symphonic Prog is my favourite sub-genre, I have to go with the rest, simply because there's more music to enjoy, including Psychedelic Rock. Smile

Putting up just one sub-genre versus all the others is a bit unfair... Can't go symphonic-less if I have all the rest; and I wouldn't dump every other sub-genre of prog rock just for symphonic prog... what would I do without King Crimson, for example?
No vote from me

QFT.

I'm all about symphonic and eclectic just about equally. Fusion is my home, though!

Odd poll choices...but as much as I like symph prog I would miss all the other genres so chose option 2.

To make matters worse, symphonic Prog is an element of various King Crimson, so then one might need to take the Symphonic Prog out of KC.  A lot of Eclectic Prog would be gone as that crosses Prog categories, but also one can say the same of many categories here (cue the old multi-genre tagging is best thing).

Lots of my favourite Prog has a Symphonic Prog component, but most I like I would not define particularly as Symphonic Prog, and it is not one of my favoured categories in PA (still, plenty of albums I love included in Symphonic Prog).

I tend to favour Krautrock, Canterbury Scene, RIO/ Avant Prog, Prog Folk, Progressive Electronic, JRF, Zeuhl, Indo-Prog/ Raga Rock, Psych.... If you had to remove all the music included in PA's Symphonic Prog category compered to others included in other categories in my collection, then I would definitely go not-Symph.

Anyway, this might seem too serious  a response for what is quite a tongue-in-cheek poll.

I actually don’t think this is as silly as some people make out. It seems clear to me that symphonic in this poll refers only to the bands and artists tagged as such by PA’s genres. And it definitely sometimes appears that some members of this forum seem to overwhelmingly prefer music from the Symphonic genre within PA. As such, I am not surprised to see people voting for it, even though that would be anathema to me.

I do like symphonic prog, but I love so much more than that. And anyway, there is still plenty of symphonic prog to be found outside Symphonic (within, eg, RPI, Neo, Eclectic and Crossover), so for me this is a no-brainer. If I choose the music belonging to the PA genres apart from Symphonic, I get to have my cake, and eat it too!

Yes, I will lose some of the music I love, but I would lose so much more if I were to choose only Symphonic.

As much as I appreciate and respect the talent and contributions of so many symph groups, I don't listen to bands from that subgenre so often nowadays.

Yeah, the poll is clear enough at it specifically talks about PA subgenres, and it's not ridiculous (well the third option is obviously tongue-in-cheek) and I did vote for the not-Symph choice.  We have actually this done before years ago as I recall, and Symph fared well up against every other PA category.  That the votes are as even as they are says something.  It's been clear over the years that Symphonic Prog type music has been favoured at PA (despite calls from one or two that the more experimental Prog lovers had taken over this forum -- I think the more experimental lovers were often noticed as they often were more vocal and often argued more -- meaning made arguments).

Symphonic, if it's the 70s.  Everything else since then.

Sophie's Choice !
Can't do it.
All my favourite bands are in Symph, but no way would I not want to hear so many of the other bands I love in the RPI, Eclectic, Heavy Prog, Jazz/Fusion, Prog Folk and Crossover genres.

I listen to more Neo-prog than anything else now, even though Camel remain my favourite band.

Symphonic Prog is my favorite genre. But, I like everything as long as the music is good and touches my heart. :)

easily the rest. I much prefer Zeuhl, Krautrock, Space Rock, Eclectic, Avant/RIO or Progressive Electronic to Symphonic

Hi,

Agreed. Way too simplistic.

I can't even think of an answer, and in many ways it just shows the breadth of the music knowledge/understanding of the OP? This is my guess, only!

The rest for me, symphonic is probably only 10% or less of my prog listening.

This is the reason I don't break it down further than prog.  Tangerine Dream for example, covers many subgenres. So do many other groups.

this poll reminds me of a Dream Theater vs all other prog-metal bands (or something like that, I don't remember the exact words). Thank God DT did not win that poll LOL

I think I'll abstain from voting, as my 'prog stew' generally includes copious amounts of symphonic, psych/space, and eclectic, a good dollop of prog folk, with dashes of Canterbury, RIO, and electronic for seasoning.

Don't know. Symphonic stuff is not usually what I listen to the most, but there is music I like from most of the so-called subgenres - except perhaps prog metal.
