RYM says I own 354. I'm still not done cataloging, so it could be more.

We have an almost identical list of Symphonic Prog artists, so we obviously have very similar tastes in music. Thumbs Up

Genesis, Echolyn, Spock's Beard, Yes, Izz, Kansas, and Transatlantic received the highest tallies.

Definitely 100+.  Maybe 400+? I've never calculated them.

I own music from 33 separate bands and artists of this category with multiple titles from many of them. 100+ definitely. Easily. Too many to count specifically.

Way over 100, and so is my collection of jazz, fusion, RPI, blues, etc.

Posted By: JD
Date Posted: February 24 2022 at 12:58
I've never counted them and I already disagree with some of the classifications.
Specifically, ELP are NOT symphonic, they never have been. They're Heavy Prog.
I don't care what PA says. But I'm happy to play along. With a collection of 1754 'items' (CD & LP, some titles duplicated) it's not hard to imagine even 5% of my collection being symphonic and that would net me approx. 90 titles.

I like the precision here. I am also too lazy to count, but I'm sure it is not "most of the records I own" anymore... (it used to be, though, up till some 20-25 years ago).

I counted 52 albums, but probably half of Italian prog-rock albums that I own can be considered symphonic-prog. They are in separate category here on PA.

202 albums, according to my collection tracking spreadsheet. But, some of those are not full albums (sample tracks) and some that are technically in the category are not truly "Symphonic",(such as 80's era Yes, etc.), so I think its around the 150-160 range.

Geek alert!

I had some down time and played around with this a little more.  RYM only categorizes symphonic prog at the album level and one would think that would give a more accurate reading, but there are some things to consider. A lot of the more obscure albums only have a few votes for genre and the vast majority of those are erroneously just given the the broader "progressive rock" genre instead of symphonic prog. RYM also doesn't use RPI and a good number of them are symphonic prog on that site. Furthermore, various artist albums are also a wide variety of genres, include symphonic prog, whereas none are under a genre here.

Here, an entire discography of a group is one genre, so you have stuff like 1980s Genesis and Yes under symphonic prog.

So, my RYM numbers are 354. On Prog Archives that number is 466. I don't think either of these are accurate numbers. But genres are such a subjective thing, so obviously these things will never be perfect.

100+ easily but not counting them all!

Mostly seventies acts but I do like Glass Hammer a lot and that accounts for a good few plus of course a lot of Scandi bands (Wobbler, Anglagard, All Traps On Earth etc)

Counting only those that are classified by PA as symphonic, I count 63. If I include those that I consider symphonic, but are classified differently on PA, probably add another 15-20.

About the same as me then. I assumed my collection of 60 Symphonic Prog albums was relatively large by PA standards, so this poll has shown just how wrong I turned out to be. I wasn't expecting anyone to have 100+ Symphonic Prog albums, let alone 200+ albums. Embarrassed

I don’t catalog my albums with that specific genre delineation, but a quick count of Camel, Earth & Fire, ELP, Focus, Genesis, The Nice, and Yes albums, it’s right around 100. There’s other symphonic prog bands I’m pretty sure.   I think a lot of these are duplicates (vinyl + CD both).
