I personally liked it. Not the best song, but good enough to give it a second listen.

I like it. The excellent vocals and the lyrics raise it far above the somewhat mediocre song it would be otherwise.

I voted good. I was a bit disappointed at it's short length, but it's very good for what it is, and even more so as something unexpected.

The scale appears broken, as it ends with 10, which is described as being almost up there with songs from DSotM.
Honestly, and I know I, being picky, it was foolish to add that after Masterpiece. If you’d left it there, I’d not have thought anything more of it.
But there are a whole heap of people for whom DSotM is not their favourite, and if they were asked to give their Floydian masterpiece it could be something entirely different. That’s not to say DSotM is not a masterpiece, but you have added that little nugget and it makes me unable to vote for any option.
Because if 10 is “almost up there” with DSotM, then it stands to reason that every number below 10 falls further and further behind the masterpiece of DSotM. And if someone like me isn’t particularly enamoured with DSotM, then there now necessarily has to be a further sequence of numbers starting with 11, to recognise that this song might be more enjoyable than the songs on DSotM.
That’s my thoughts on your thoughts poll. It’s a great idea for a poll, ruined by the unnecessary comparison to DSotM. Neither Monstrosity, nor Masterpiece, required any additional words. As soon as you do so, you are making boundaries that others may not agree with, nor feel comfortable with.

I think the sentiments behind the making of the song are extremely laudable especially with all the proceeds going to humanitarian relief. Unfortunately I think the song itself is terrible.

I think a 6 will fit the song somewhat better than a 5.

In all honesty, whether it is any good or not is a little bit beside the point, but I think it rates as good. I like it.

I gave it a 5 (it's a straight-blues track), but upon reading your comment about the lyrics, I had to go back and see if he's sung in English and I had missed it for a bizarre reason.
Surely the Ukrainian lyrics are poignant , but for all I know he could be singing about anything Ukrainian (that's the only word I understood).
But let's believe that the lyrics are good and his voice is OK (but not great)
I guess I gave it a lower rating because it shouldn't be linked to the Floyd name, IMHO.

Absolutely. It's the cause it supports that matters, and the song itself is pretty good as well. I've just added the Ukrainian flag alongside the EU flag which is on the flag pole in my garden. Slava Ukraine!

^ Ditto. I think the addition of Nitin Sawhney as a keyboard player is an excellent move; he's a fantastic composer and multi instrumentalist and i think that this 4 piece line up could produce some excellent new music.. it probably wont happen but i think this song (and the musicians involved) has its heart in the right place and i salute its intensions.

It doesn't really sound like what I would typically call Pink Floyd but the message is what's important here.

Doesn't this qualify as a cover? Hasn't Floyd basically just taken the recording of Andriy singing an old Ukrainian protest song, edited it into a verse-chorus kind of structure, and added accompaniment in the Floyd style underneath? I'm not qualifying that as a bad thing mind you, but I'm not sure it's very "new" from a compositional stance.
Anyway the song itself is a beautiful melody and beautifully sung with lots of passion (gee I wonder why...). I don't know Ukrainian so I don't understand the lyrics, but I imagine them to be inspiring if tragic. The band sounds very nice, and Gilmore has some good material in his solos. The thing for me is that, given the nature of how this was recorded, the vocal doesn't sit very well with the instrumental. People singing solo are more prone to speeding up and slowing down, or sometimes being a little bit pitchy. There wasn't much noticeable pitchiness, but there was definitely tempo fluctuation going on that the band elected not to follow when recording their parts, which makes the two parts feel disjointed to me. Given Floyd's long history of including more off-the-cuff audio in their music and making it fit in really well (think of all the spoken word bits in DSOTM), I'm guessing they did the best they could to meet a quick deadline so this single could get out and help raise money and awareness more quickly. I'm not big on numbered rankings, but I do think it's safe to say this doesn't challenge any of Floyd's classic material on a purely musical basis for me. I do think it was absolutely the right move for Gilmore not to sing, because this isn't about Floyd. It's about Ukraine, and it's about the song Andriy is singing. Do I love the song as a whole? Not really, but I think it's a purely positive thing for it to exist and be played.

I can't believe the nit-picking I have seen about this song. There are some miserable people out there and reading some of the complaining on social media makes me sick. It still shows they are a creative force - for good (Nick's drumming sounds great and getting Nitin Sawhney involved was also inspired...)

The song itself was lukewarm to me, but as everyone else has said here, that was not the point of the single.

I'm a sort of a fan of Obyimi Doschu, so I'm used to Ukrainian singing. The chord progression is quite typical of Eastern Europe (including Russia), so nothing strange. Unfortunately the Pink Floyd part is nothing more than an arrangement. Wimuch betterth a bit more effort it could have been much better. The vocalist is great and this is the real value of the song (and a Gilmour's solo is never a waste)
I would have expected also Roger to take part in it or to do something on his own.
Anyway, it's good enough, regardless its meaning
------------- I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

Yeah that immediately struck me as odd as well. Roger is the one most often associated with political and social consciousness and protesting fascism and tyranny in his music. It's definitely ironic that Gilmore and Mason beat him to the punch here.

Roger Waters could have done with an authority figure growing up and then perhaps he wouldn't hate Authority so much. He is something of a humanist misanthrope, that is to say he likes humanity, it's the man part that he doesn't like.
