you miss my meaning. it is not just about this poll. Roman Bunka is in my opinion a guitar player that should be talked much more about. but no-one ever mentions him, though he is absolutely brilliant

Avoiding the most obvious ones (even though I do like them): Barre, Hillage, Belew, Akkerman, and, OK, Latimer, although he's pretty obvious.

I'll go with Phil Miller, Pye Hastings, Franco Mussida, Robert Fripp and Steve Hillage. And I'll give an outside nod to Michael Rother, who I would rother have than Steve Rothery. ;).

Fripp for the soundscapes and those angular expressions. Love that he sits beside the drummer and not out front like most lead guitarists.
The record label I believe it was made Robert stand when they signed with them but after a few shows he went back to sitting and the very first show he did like that had none other than Jimmi Hendrix in the audience. Hendrix was apparently blown away seeing him live. Fripp's sister was at Hendrix table or beside it and heard all the praise. Fripp met Hendrix after the show and Hendrix shook his hand with his left telling Fripp it's closer to my heart. A lot of respect between the two.

I'm not really into "guitar virtuosos" or their speedy solos at all. But these guys mostly play in a way that places them within the music and not on top. Although quite profilic and highly skilled, I rarely feel that they forget that they are part of a group: Robert Fripp first. Also: David Gilmour, Andrew Latimer, Phil Miller and Steve Hackett. A super obvious list:) Love Franco Mussida too.

My actual favorite is Terje Rypdal though. Which goes against most of what I originally wrote.

I feel you. Goblin's Massimo Morante never shows up in guitarists' polls and he's one of my favorites.

There are tons of  "great" guitarists in this poll. I like Fripp, Phil Miller, Jeff Beck, Todd Rundgren, and Gary Green; in that order. Not forgetting Chris Spedding,  Bill Nelson, Tony Spada, Tony MacAlpine, Dave Edmunds, and of course the impeccable Steve Morse. Killer music from all these pickers.

A strong argument for Fripp as the greatest prog guitarist could be made on numerous levels.  He also happened to help invent the genre itself.  On the other hand Howe technically outdoes them all in terms of range, and Holdsworth beats everyone for sheer athletic skill and innovation.

Hi,

I'm gonna skip this one ... there are way too many not listed here that could get a vote or some much appreciated attention, but will never get it ... from the idea of interpretation and improvisation, I would have liked to see John Weinzierl listed here, but too many folks don't like the individuality and the pop/rock idea that AD2 IS NOT and never wanted to be. I also miss Michael Karoli, who was blasting out full throttle blow outs (Mother Sky) at a time when only a handful were known for doing it.

In my book, there is too much pop/rock in that list, and I would have liked to see the list improved to a much wider realm so folks like Jukka Tolonen, and even Terje Rypdal can have a chance at an inch of discussion, when it will be impossible for them to even get a hello in a list like that. Even in England, folks like Toni McPhee deserve a mention for some fantastic material. Or David Clark Allen (Carmen) who was doing Spanish stuff on the electric guitar beautifully, and really helped bring to light a lot of Spanish bands, even though this one band was from LA ... the irony is just insane!

AND THE BEAUTY ... IMPOSSIBLE TO DISCUSS MORE OFTEN THAN NOT.

There is too much music out there ... for anyone to think of a "favorite" and so much of it is dictated by what the band is doing ... for a "progressive" group of folks, I would have liked to see the pop/rock guitarists taken out of the list!

Sorry ... that's me ... too much music, and I can never EVER make a call on a favorite. I (somehow!) think that choosing a "favorite" means one is not listening to other stuff out there. At least that's what I have learned from 50 years of being into the new and experimental stuff. There are a lot of excellent and far out rock guitarists, but I would like to see us give more value and appreciation to those that we never discuss here, or we might once in a lifetime!

Gilmour, of course. But also a little love to the underrated Martine Barre, and the very underrated Justin Hayward, who was never flashy or overindulgent, but always gave Moody Blues songs exactly just the right emphasis.

1) Latimer
2) Hackett
3) Rothery
4) Gilmour
5) Akkerman

Holdsworth and Petrucci are probably technically the most brilliant, but I just don't like their music and playing style much.

Hi,

At least I was man enough to list some folks. You, on the other hand just made one of those socks full of custard comments, that splashed on the wall ... you must be proud of your Andi Warhol impression. You would do better with Marilyn instead of wasting a comment on me! Tongue

Actually he listed 5 guitarists on page 1.

From the list

Lifeson

McLaughlin

Mussida

Akkerman

Green

My favorite, and not mentioned, the late Eddy Marron (Vita Nova, Dzyan, Missus Beastly, Giger Lenz Marron) His work especially in Dzyan and GLM was jaw dropping in it's unbridled technique and emotion.

He isn't wrong though. I've noticed it and I'm sure many others have as well. you never miss an opportunity to take a steaming dump in many threads. Doesn't really bother me one way or the other. It's entertaining at the very least.

Oh, and I went with Gilmore, Lifeson, Hackett, Howe, and Govan
