So we always talk about the Italian scene when it comes to foreign prog rock, so how about the other foreign speakers. Yes there are foreign bands like Triumvirat, Eloy, and Aphrodite's Child, but those guys speak english. I am doing a poll talking about the albums that speak other than English(Anglagard's other two albums did not make it because they were completely instrumental). To be diverse, I will pick Storia Di Un Minuto, Darwin, Anabelas, Alturas de Macchu Picchu(one of the underrated masterpieces in progressive rock), and Si On Avait Besoin D'Une Cinquieme. I wonder why French never had a bigger prog rock scene?

Nominate one not on the list if you could as well.

Darwin, Anabelas, MDK, Sommerabend. Fifth one is harder, probably I like Io Sono Nato Libero most of the rest.

Many others could be nominated, but just to come up with something unknown, I recommend Epitafio a la Permanencia by Un Festin Sagital from Chile, even though (as Anabelas) it doesn't have that much singing on it.

Of this list, Per Un Amico, even though there are great albums in this list. Not in this list "Variaciones" by Modulos, a great synphonic prog band from Sapin.

I'll pick Hybris - Anglagard, Per Un Amico - PFM, Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh - Magma, and K.A - Magma from the list, and Arachnoid - Arachnoid not in the list.

My favorite is Magma. I can say that without any doubt. But I still felt like voting for Storia De Un Minuto (and my most listened to Magma are probably their two first)

Really Paul? You are missing a lot of great music. Not to brag, but I know all of them, plus I used to have them on CD or LP at some point. BTW Czesław's Niemen name is misspelled.
From the list, my vote went to Per Un Amico.
Couple my favorites not on the list:
Arti E Mestieri - Tilt
Locanda delle Fate - Forse le lucciole non si amano più
Bubu - Anabelas

I think you mean a bigger scene to be known abroad. We can listen to prog from all over the world these days because of the internet, but before that, unless a band would make it big, not that many people would know about it.

But there's so much more non-English prog...

PFM - Storia di un minuto
Novalis - Sommerabend

From France, I recommend Nemo's Coma.

I love Rahmann but there is only vocals on 2 tracks and they’re pretty incidental ?!?!

Per Un Amico is expectedly the highest voted so far. I personally prefer Storia Di Un Minuto, because it had more to explore for me from the mellotron riff on Impressioni di Settembre, the flute jam on Dove Quando Parte 2, and also the fun sounding E Festa. I can name more great parts about that album. For Per Un Amico, I really like the flute/guitar duet sections on Appena Un Po, the electronic synthesizer interlude on Il Banchetto, the detuned synthesizer part that sounds like a carnival on that same track, and finally the repetitious section at the end of Geranio. However, I found Storia to be more memorable, since I can never remember what happens after the vocals on Per Un Amico's title track or how the acoustic piano solo on Il Banchetto sounds.

OK, five, that's nice, otherwise it would have been difficult. Though I guess I would have gone for Hybris for my favourite. The other four would be Darwin, the Harmonium one, Felona e Sorona, and Triana... though ther is not an album called Triana from the band, so I guess you meant El Patio. From them I think both El Patio and Hijos del Agobio are wonderful. Another album I would add is Inferno by Metamorfosi. And from the list, I don't know, perhaps I would choose the SBB one if I had heard it... I have heard a bit from them and have really liked it, but haven't gotten up to checking them out more.

Per un Amico (PFM)

I have loved Ange ever since I saw them live around 71-2. Still going strong which should be celebrated as the music is still top quality-Au Dela Du Delire is a quality album from the first four.Italian? - Maxophone is a favourite of mine. Cast from Mexico are excellent -earlier ones non-English -ironically Power and Outcome (English Speaking) is my favourite!

I was very divided between Si On Avait Besoin D'une Cinquieme of Harmonium and Hybris of Anglagard. But in the end I decided by Hybris but only by a very thin hair. Both are absolutely two amazing prog works in their very own and different way.

Define big. Or, at least, how you measure it. The British prog bands tend to be the giants everyone knows. So big, I guess. The RPI scene is massive, though not so well known. So big, I guess, But in comparison to a lot of other countries, I don’t think France has ever been only a “small” contributor to the prog scene.

Quite apart from the Zeuhl scene, which was (at least initially) a predominantly French phenomenon, in the “classic era” there are (relatively speaking) well-known acts such as Ange, Atoll, Mona Lisa, Orion, Pentacle (even if they released only one album), Pulsar

Not to mention my favourite Canterbury Scene band is not from Canterbury, but from France: Moving Gelatine Plates

Zeuhl wasn’t the only avant and out there French music, as some of the famous “classic” RIO/Avant artists are also from France, such as Art Zoid and Etron Fou Leloublan. Other artists of the French avant scene from this vague time period can also be found across other PA genres such as Progressive Electronic and Krautrock, as (like Zeuhl), they are more of a unique French fusion of styles, rather than able to be neatly pigeonholed into a PA genre.

And all this is without getting into the more modern era, where a number of French acts are incredibly influential in Experimental/Post and Tech/Extreme prog music; as well as there being plenty of great bands that are still in the realm of the more traditional symphonic and neo sounds. There continues to also be a great number of French RIO/Avant bands.

It seems to me less that France did not and does nor have a big prog scene, so much as you have simply not investigated it. I admit I don’t have a lot of French prog from the ‘70s and ‘80s, but in terms of contemporary prog (especially from the last 10 or 20 years) I have a lot (and I mean a lot) of French prog in my collection - almost all, in PA terms, heavy, eclectic, avant or one of the three prog metal genres. My own experience with French prog is therefore limited, and yet already “big” compared to other countries.

I have not mentioned any folk or psych, nor jazz fusion or progressive electronic (outside the avant), and there are no doubt plenty of examples others more well-versed in French prog could give you.

From the list, the two Le Orme albums are my favorites, then the first three Banco records. For me, there is something so moving about the singing in Italian of those groups, especially Le Orme.
Ones not listed would be Latte e Miele's Papillon and Triade's La Storia di Sabazio.
