Pre-1990 in the title meaning that the first studio album was released before 1990, not that it broke up before 1990.

These are some long-lived bands with ten or more studio albums, and no "solo" names. All of these must have relesased a studio album in the 10s or up to qualify and must have released an album before the 90s began. All are included in PA "Prog" categories.

Art Zoyd - Symphonie pour le jour oů brűleront les cités (1976) & Phase V (2018)*
Banco del Mutuo Soccorso - s/t (1972) & Transiberiana (2019)
Camel - Camel (1973) & The Snow Goose (Re-recording) (2013)**
Caravan - Caravan (1968) & It’s None of Your Business (2021)
Dream Theater - When Dream and Day Unite (1989) & A View From the Top of the World (2021)
Faust - Faust (1971) & ,,Daumenbruch" (2022)***
Goblin - Profondo rosso (1975) & Fearless (37513 Zombie Ave.) (2018)****
Guru Guru - UFO (1970) & Rotate! (2018)*****
Gong - Magick Brother (1970) & The Universe Also Collapses (2019)
Hawkwind - Hawkwind (1970) & Somnia (2021)
IQ - Tales from the Lush Attic (1983) & Resistance (2019)
Jethro Tull - This Was (1968) & The Zealot Gene (2022)
Magma - Magma [Kobaďa] (1970) & Zëss - Le Jour Du Néant (2019)
Marillion - Script for a Jester's Tear (1983) & An Hour Before It's Dark (2022)
Pendragon - The Jewel (1985) & Love Over Fear (2020)
Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967) & The Endless River (2014)
Premiata Forneria Marconi [PFM] - Storia di un minuto (1972) & I Dreamed of Electric Sheep / Ho sognato pecore elettriche (2021)
Renaissance - Renaissance (1969) & Grandine Il Vento [aka: Symphony Of Light] (2013)
Rush - Rush (1974) & Clockwork Angels (2012)
Soft Machine - The Soft Machine (1968) & Hidden Details (2018)******
Swans - Filth (1983) & leaving meaning. (2019)
Tangerine Dream - Electronic Meditation (1970) & Raum (2022)
Univers Zéro - Univers Zéro [1313] (1977) & Phosphorescent Dreams (2014)
Van der Graaf Generator [VdGG] - The Aerosol Grey Machine (1969) & Do Not Disturb (2016)
Yes - Yes (1969) & The Quest (2021)

* Due to a comment, I changed Art Zoyd's latest studio album release from Armageddon - Opérette Pour Robots (2012) to Phase V which I will consider both as a boxset (spans five CDs) and as a studio albums release.
** I questioned whether I should include Camel as The Snow Goose is the only Camel studio album since 2002, and it is a re-recording. This is not the only hump in the road to making this poll.
*** While PA lists a later album from 2022 for Faust (Punkt), I did not include it because I see it listed as an archival release elsewhere.
**** PA does not list the Fearless Goblin album but lists two others that are later, both of which are under the name
Claudio Simonetti's Goblin. Fearless is the last studio album listed at other sites I checked, including the official site. The latest proper Goblin release listed at PA is Four of a Kind from 2015.
***** I re-ordered a bit and replaced Clannad's Clannad (1973) & Nádúr (2013) with the Guru Guru albums after a comment was left. I do like early Clannad and don't know the modern albums of either.
****** I had forgotten about Soft Machine's Hidden Details and it wasn't listed where I had primarily checked albums for initial research -- now added. Santana - Santana (1969) & Blessings and Miracles (2021) was removed for it despite how much that debut by Santana has meant to me.

Feel free to vote no matter how little you know from the list provided that you have heard both albums by the band you vote for, or have at least heard a fair amount of music from both the debut and that latest album listed. So please vote for a pair of albums you like by an act, can appreciate somewhat, know, respect the most out of those duos you know here, dislike the least.... :)

Also feel free to mention any other album duos (first and last) by a band (not artist) provided that the band released its first album before 1990, released at least one studio in the 2010's and/or 2020's, is included in a Prog category at PA, and has released at least ten studio albums during its career.

Apologies if I seem to have missed obvious ones and for any errors. I tried to cover many big names and went outside my tastes. If it was just about what I liked, then the list would be significantly different with various lesser known bands. There actually is not a lot here where I have heard both albums, at least in full.

I rest the OP blurb before looking at the list, and was unsurprised to see the first two bands that had immediately sprung to my mind (VDGG and BSM) were there. I gave my vote to BSM, after a little thought.

The next bands I thought of were “prog related”, but still in PA:

Black Sabbath (1970 and 2013)
Iron Maiden (1980 and 2021)

Plus a few more (from prog related) that  I’m not familiar enough with, and can’t be bothered to check, but am sure would fit the criteria:

Kings X
Metallica
Phish
Wishbone Ash

^^ Not really important, but by "is included in a Prog category at PA", I meant to exclude the Prog related and Proto-Prog categories as those have been termed non-prog categories in my time at PA. I've actually had a problem with calling those non-Prog categories so all the more reason to be more descriptive.

As for Soft Machine, that is one that I had hoped to include but hadn't researched enough. I love the early albums and Third is one of my very favourite albums in PA. I looked it up on rateyourmusic, and it does not go beyond 1994's Rubber Riff for studio albums. I forgot about Hidden Details, which is in PA.   Often I find I have to cross-check more than one site, even in cases where I had know of an album, but forgot like with Soft Machine. I might edit that one in while losing another.

Oh, yes, I understood your intention. I was just saying that the next bands that occurred to me were prog-related, rather than in a pro category.

There are probably a number of prog metal bands that meet your criteria, but I’m guessing they are not really bands you’d be familiar with.

The bands/albums I particularly like from your poll are:

Art Zoyd
BSM
Goblin
Gong
Magma
Rush
Swans
Univers Zéro
VDGG

Oh, I see. Thanks, Nick. Black Sabbath was actually one of the first name to come to my mind when thinking about this poll (as was Soft Machine, sadly, cause I missed it badly). If I include it then I am removing Santana despite how significant that debut has been to me..

Thanks, Drew. While I commonly don't vote in my own polls and also not that uncommonly vote in my own polls with the commentary that I don't often vote in my own polls, :p , I will give Magma a vote.

I voted for Tangerine Dream (just ahead of Goblin).

Electronic Meditation is the beginning of an era, the debut by one of the most important bands that has ever existed, IMHO.

The new album, Raum, in spite of having only three composition credits by the late founder Edgar Froese, is better than it has any right to be, a tour de force that encapsulates everything Tangerine Dream has sonically represented (with exception to the band's nadir in the '90s). (Raum, which means "space," comes fifty years after Tangerine Dream's third album, Zeit, which means "time.")

Goblin is another of my favorite bands. I've listened to them about as long as Tangerine Dream. Profondo Rosso is a landmark soundtrack album for a landmark film, and I don't believe Goblin has ever not played the iconic title theme in any of their concerts.

Fearless is a really cool album of re-recordings that features new arrangements, new twists, and even orchestral backing (that works!) on three tracks. It's not an album of brand-new material, but I love it, and the band sounded great as ever on it (RIP to guitarist and co-founder Massimo Morante, who died very recently).

Hi,

Banco is good, even though it is now Vittorio's band, without the magic voice at the front. Still strong.

I think I would have included DJAM KARET in this listing as they have been, for the most part exceptional in their almost 35 years, even if you and I will miss the movie landscape setting of their earlier material, compared to the more "song/music" minded material in the past few years, but they still produce far out things, and their list of close friends together have a super nice set of materials.

MAGMA is likely to be the best and favored of all ... Zess, is in my mind what Christian Vander has wanted to do, but has not been able to get his friends to do, but they did well enough to shine for more than 50 years, and that album, with an orchestra is insanely great, and to me, if that were the last of their albums, you could say they went out with an incredible bang ... at least Christian did, as his vocals in that thing are totally out of this world and insane, but he does it! To me, it is strong enough to be one of their best albums EVER ... and with an orchestra, it would even show the incredible strength of the material they have produced all along!

CAMEL is always deserving, and I'm proud to have been one of the few that loved THE SNOW GOOSE, the day that it came out, amidst a lot of "fans" screaming that it was not rock'n'roll and not fit on the FM radio lists at the time. It was beautiful, and loving and caring work ... and I can't wait to get my hands on that redone version.

GONG, is an emotional journey for me. I met and knew and corresponded regularly with Daevid and Gilly and I liked what they did, though many could never understand their "beat poet" side of their work. The next re-invention of the band, is more about "song" than it is about beat poetry and its ability to make words come together and work, with or without meaning. The new version, tries hard to make it seem like they are hip and with it, but in the end, it feels like they need some drugs and lots more women (too many men!!!)and some more sex, in order to make their music more interesting than just a male driven idea. GONG was not just Daevid's idea, though he was the one that colored it with all the crayons and cartoons. In many ways the band was quite literary, and this is something that the current version has no idea what it means, and how the "work" itself is the important thing ... not another just another song in the same format as all the others!

TD, is, for me, the sad one. For a group with Edgar Froese, it was cinematic music at its core, but when he passed away, the releases since have been just machine music, by people that do not know what a movie score is about, and can not feel what the sound of one of those noises feels like or is about. As such, even though RAUM is probably the better album since Edgar passed away, it is still way too mechanical, and not a "visual" experience, that the Edgar factory of music gave you time and time again, even by giving you different versions of many of his own pieces of work. It takes talent to be able to love and enjoy what you do to a fascinating extent, but the sad thing is that what TD has done since Edgar left is not even memorable ... you won't whistle a minute of anything ... and you can't say that about at least an incredible amount of their work that you will always remember. If that is not the greatest affection and compliment for a band, then music is not worth talking about!

Regarding Art Zoyd, Phase V is newer and way better than Armageddon, but in my opinion misclassified as box set by PA. Well, it actually is a box set, but it was also their next and last regular album. With Phase V AZ wins easily, but as things stand, I go for Soft Machine. AZ is about as good, as well as UZ, Swans, Banco, Camel, VdGG.

I had wondered about how to handle that Art Zoyd release. I have changed it to Phase V and am happy to think of it as both a boxset and a studio album release. Soft Machine - their first and last are belters and it was a pleasure to see that last line-up back in 2019.  I also saw them earlier this year and Fred Baker revived 'Joy of a Toy' from that very first album.

As the immortal Spinal Tap might wonder, how could I leave that behind?*

I haven't heard the later albums, but I have several of the early Guru Guru albums. And Mani Neumeier is fantastic.

* actual quote from the lyrics of "Big Bottom", "How can I leave this behind?"

I could remove Hawkwind which has no votes, but I think I'll add it in a just slightly out of alphabetical order place with some movement of a few options with no votes. Sorry Clannad, I do like your early albums, but it feels a little less essential to this poll somehow (added also in case a certain Ken might appreciate it).

^ Mike Oldfield is the kind of name that I meant to exclude when I brought up bands rather than artist and solo names. I might do an "artists" poll at some time with rather different parameters. Love to cover names such as Klaus Schulze, Robert Wyatt, Peter Hammill, Roy Harper etc.

"These are some long-lived bands with ten or more studio albums, and no "solo" names. All of these must have released a studio album in the 10s or up to qualify and must have released an album before the 90s began. All are included in PA "Prog" categories."

"Also feel free to mention any other album duos (first and last) by a band (not artist) provided that the band released its first album before 1990, released at least one studio in the 2010's and/or 2020's, is included in a Prog category at PA, and has released at least ten studio albums during its career."

Do you guys have 44˝? I think I missed the boat on that one. It's pricey but such a HUGE box!

It's wonderful

Seconded.
I have suppressed the price tag.
It has a 2004 (!) live version of 2/3 of Armageddon by the way, which isn't bad, it just wasn't meant as a standalone CD and arguably doesn't work that well as such.

LOL

I hear you. I've done that so much this year already. I'll have to think about it.
