I'm gonna go with Area over The Pentangle. These albums reveal something new and jaw-dropping each and every time I listen to them--even today!

From the list Deep Purple. Paice is a groove king!

More killer quintets are Bubblemath and Echolyn.

A great poll and hard to choose a favourite, but it's a YES vote for me, although I'm surprised there's no famous five line-up of Banks, Collins, Gabriel, Hackett & Rutherford in the poll. Wink

Some great choices, but missing the so-called Second Great Quintet of
Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Tony Williams
...and the arguably even greater Lost Quintet:
Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland

But Anderson, Barre, Evan, Glascock and Barlow were better.

Well Genesis would have made my top five with Mahavishnu Orchestra, Yes, King Crimson and Soft Machine.
Having a hard time picking from the last four though.

I knew as soon as I saw Stratos, Fariselli, Tavolazzi, Tofani, & Capiozzo who I would want to vote for. While there are various brilliant albums with that line-up, I have a particular thing for Caution Radiation Area.

Looks like we're leading up to a second list of quintets! We're up to nine (9) alternate suggestions so far, so, stay tuned! (Then we'll have to do a run off, right?)

Gonna go with Gentle Giant on this one... though if classic Genesis was included, I would have picked them Thumbs Up Excellent poll!

Great names enough to choose from, but there is a gap between Anderson, Squire, Howe, Wakeman & Bruford (who created the best album ever imho) and the others, which is even more noticeable because of the absence of Gabriel, Hackett, Banks, Rutherford & Collins (who created the second best album ever).

1) Latimer, Bardens, Sinclair, Ward and Collins
2) Orford, Holmes, Nicholls, Jowitt and Cook
3) Banks, Hackett, Gabriel, Rutherford and Collins
4) Rothery, Kelly, Trevawas, Mosley and either Fish or Hogarth (equally good)
5) Cousins, Lambert, Hawken, Cronk and Coombes

From the list, it's hard to pick between GG, Renaissance, Iona and Uriah Heep.
I'll go with GG.

Okay, we're definitely heading toward a "part 2"; up to 13 alternatives! (Didn't know Strawbs, IQ, or Marillion were five-somes!)

LOL Man! AC/DC over the Rainbow Rising line-up? That album influenced countless bands.

These stand out for me (King Crimson, Soft Machine, Gentle Giant and more are favorites of mine, but not because of the line-ups/albums in the poll). I'm not going to vote for one of the others, as I love them them in very different ways and for different reasons:

early Weather Report
PFM 1972
Crac!-era Area
1972 Pentangle
2022 black midi
Radiohead
