So, just a little over one week before the big night. Share some of your favourite christmas diddies. Doesn't need to be prog or even prog adjacent. One tune per post.

Marillion - And So This is Christmas (War is Over) - but not for our friends in The Ukraine. Ouch

Cristi has probably just  fallen off his chair with shock that  I've chosen Marillion for one of my favourite Christmas songs, and it's better than the original too! Tongue

HI,

I only have one song to list ... Spike Milligan's Walking Backwards for Christmas

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e61uC-5s9VU

After that, a Space Pirate Radio special on Christmas Day in 1978 was done on PRIME TIME and there were some far out features and dandies.

First Hour
Bothy Band
Malecorne En Public
Banco As In A Last Supper
Bothy Band
Anthony Phillips Private Parts and Pieces
Mike Oldfield

Second Hour

Third Hour

Sadistic Mika Band 1st
Mike Oldfield Tubular Bells 2

The Beatles Christmas Show

Not sure "progressive" or "regressive" can do something this good! The Beatles had 7 Christmas Shows for their fan club with the last one mostly John and Yoko. They were funny and fun and crazy ... but to my knowledge they have never been released regularly, which is a shame as you see them work together and have fun a lot more.

My all time favourite song for christmas is by Nat King Cole - The Christmas Song (Marry Chrisymas to You). I am very soft for Nats vocal prows, and hes piano skills. He might be my favourite vocal preformer, and this song inparticular showcases hes amazing ability to hit perfect notes. Hes also a very good pianist.

Spessialy also that litle "jingle bell" chord strumming on the end of the song is very cool, remeinds me of something Robert Fripp would have done.

I am planning a sole Nat King Cole thread also, hes worth many listens and much reading up about. Perhaps my favourite musician of that time. Hes the best voice.

This refrain/ vocal line is sung by Nat King Cole with such perfection in both pace, dynamics and sincerity, one of the best lines ever sung.

And so I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
Although it's been said many times, many ways
Merry Christmas to you

More on the 'classical' side:

Welshman Karl Jenkins 2009 work; it has plenty of choruses and trumpets.. very interesting (imo). Heard it last night at a classical music station.

TIS THE SEASON.

This thread (or one just like it) pops up every year I'm sure. So why start a new one? Name some more favorite Proggy Christmas tunes! (Or albums) if there was a proggy Christmas Suite out there that'd be amazing.

Tunes or albums work!

I read in one of the other threads where someone said they hated this song because they had heard it way too many time.  I don't think that I have ever heard it before.  Embarrassed  Not sure if it is a UK song that hasn't been played in the US or if I just don't recognize the title.  I'll give it a listen shortly to see if it rings any bells.

Releasing a Christmas song has to be the laziest (and dare I say most cynical) way of selling music.

I am thinking in particular of "Last Christmas" by Wham. This song might just as well be called "Last Easter" or "Last New Year" for all the non-sensical lyrics have to actually do with Christmas.

^ I disagree if it has good Christmas spirit, and of course good music. Some artists actually like Holiday music & albums associated with it.   Ever heard the Beatles 'Christmas Albums' they released to members of their fan club in the early 1960s ?   A lot of fun.

To me, I've Seen All Good People is a Xmas song - I got the Yes Album as a Xmas gift waaaaay back and have since always associated All Good People with Xmas.  I guess its the jangly guitar, the jingly percussion, the choral harmonies, and the wintery woodwinds .....it may not technically be a Xmas song, but we've all got something that ain't all that Xmasy that we identify as Xmasy.  Plus, I get to pull out one of my favorite Yes albums once a year to highlight the holiday festivities.
