While Mila's "Interactive Poll: It Takes Two!" is still going on with most not having voted yet, I decided to put up another kind of "it takes two" or "three" for nominations in the meantime -- especially for those of us who already voted. I don't see a conflict in a nomination round overlapping a voting round but I hope I am not thought of as stepping on toes. I can be too impulsive.

In this round, we think of two bands/ projects (or three) that each have a song sung by the same singer. That singer does not need to be a regular of the band. If thinking of two bands that have shared the same singer proves too hard, feel free to include a solo release of that singer. And consider a third bonus (might not be in the poll) if there are more than two projects with that singer involved in a song. I would like the bonus mentioned (from project not yet covered) if you have one.

So here are the guidelines for nomination:

1. Mention with youtube embeds if you can, otherwise links, or bandcamp links etc., two or three tracks by two or three projects with the same singer. Two at least will be nominated, but consider a bonus if there are three projects that you wish to represent.

2. You can post as many duos or trios as you like (and different artists), just plan to have your nominated duo or trio ready by, well, that I will say later. Maybe two weeks from now.

3. I would rather make this non-Prog, although if one of the three projects by the singer is Prog, that's fine, and it can go in the bonus category.

4. Please try to keep the entries on the shorter length side. Up to about seven minutes for a track might be okay, less is more ideal. That said, it's more of a cumulative thing, so if you have, say, one three minute and one nine minute track, that's fine. I want to be flexible while avoiding "epic length" ones.

For voting:

1. You will be expected to vote for three tracks total, none that you nominated, unless we include bonuses, and from the bonuses you can vote for one more (Mila inspired). Vote in the poll and mention your choices in a post. EDIT: Decided to go with voting for two bonus tracks (if that means voting on a poll option line twice, then so be it as I had to combine bonuses).

--------------------------------------------------------

My singer is the wonderful Elizabeth Fraser, best known for her role in Cocteau Twins. I might change the Massive Attack one because it is so well-known and I have mentioned it before, but I love it (she is on more than one song on Mezzanine).

Cocteau Twins - Musette and Drums (off Head Over Heels, 1983)

Massive Attack - Teardrop (off Mezzanine, 1998)

Bonus:

Harold Budd, Elizabeth Fraser, Robin Guthrie & Simon Raymonde - She Will Destroy You (off The Moon and the Melodies (1986)

She also made an EP under the name Sun's Signature in 2022.

-----------------------------------------------------

Here is the youtube playlist for all posted tracks, starting with my three.

And here is the playlist for just the nominees:

I ask that people vote for three songs with three different singers in the the main poll, and please vote for two songs in the bonus poll (if you did not include a bonus option, then voting here is optional). Please specify which songs you voted for in a post.

Here is the list of all the nominees:

Main:

Lewian:
Rainbirds - Waltz for Jane (Katharina Franck)
FM Einheit w/ Katharina Franck - Educacao

Suitkees
High Life Soundtrack - Willow (Stuart Staples)
Micatone - Handbrake (featuring Stuart Staples)

Suitkees: Tindersticks - Frozen (Stuart Staples)
Ipd: Isildurs Bane & Peter Hammill - Before You Know It
Mila: Toto Bona Lokua - Ma Mama
Mathman: Meg Baird & Mary Lattimore: Damaged Sunset
Ompha: The Firm - Midnight Moonlight (Paul Rogers)
Cristi: Europeans - Going to Work (Steve Hogarth)
Logan: The Future Sound of London w/ Elizabeth Fraser - Lifeforms Pt. 4

Making those two songs each, I have:

Katharina Franck - Wind Was Playing With My Hair OR Tindersticks - Frozen (Stuart Staples)
Isildurs Bane & Peter Hammill - Before You Know It OR Toto Bona Lokua - Ma Mama
Meg Baird & Mary Lattimore - Damaged Sunset OR The Firm - Midnight Moonlight (Paul Rogers)
Europeans - Going to Work (Steve Hogarth) OR The Future Sound of London (aka FSOL) w/ Fraser - Lifeforms Pt. 4

The OR can be an AND if those are your two choices from the bonuses.

It's a bit of a squeeze in the bonuses, but I wanted to fit them all in and have an Intermission.

so just singers that were involved in several bands/projects?
I'll think of something and get back to this.

So as not to be excluded from this poll, I decided to ignore the non-prog request and choose two projects with Peter Hammill as singer. But I won't choose the obvious. Instead, I will go for these two:

Isildurs Bane & Peter Hammill - In Amazonia - Before You Know It

The Amorphous Androgynous & Peter Hammill - We Persuade Ourselves We Are Immortal

Unfortunately, it appears that this second video is a short (4:51) promotional video rather than the album track (which is 12:22 long).

Cool. I have an artist in mind. But first will vote in Mila's poll. I have made a few start and stop listens. But a lot of work recently.

Hmm, with the previous poll I was initially a bit reluctant, but it turned out quite easy to find some duos... Here, I'm less sure if it will be that easy. Will see, but cannot guarantee to come up with something...

This is not so easy, so it may be the only idea I have (but let's see) is two projects that I already had in earlier polls, but anyway, here goes.
It's the German singer Katharina Franck, voice of the Rainbirds:
Waltz for Jane
She has also taken part in FM Einheit's project Stein (here she sings in Portuguese):
Educacao

Saved by my favourite https://www.radiofrance.fr/fip" rel="nofollow - radio station that just played the below Micatone track, with singer Stuart Staples of Tindersticks fame. I already presented them here before, but you may not know that Tindersticks and Stuart Staples wrote most of the film music for Claire Denis' films. So, Stuart Staples is the featured singer here.

Stuart Staples - Willow (from the soundtrack of High Life, 2018):

In 2012 he lend his voice to a track of Micatone; I didn't know this, but it just came by on the radio and I liked it...

Micatone - Handbrake (featuring Stuart Staples):

And then something by Tindersticks themselves from the same year, from the album The Something Rain (2012).

Tindersticks - Frozen:

Hello everyone. It's been a while.

I am sorry that I have been absent for so long time, and since you might be wondering why, I think I better come clean: I have been facing mental problems for some time, and my psychiatrist thinks the main cause is autism - which I believe is plausible. One of the things about autism is, you have to use more mental resources on a lot of things, including work, but also social interaction. Since I have had too much work, I have been rather stressed, and I haven't had the surplus to participate in the polls. It's regrettable because I really miss it, but maybe I will get some tools that make it easier for me to stick around.

Perhaps I will begin writing comments on PA again, and perhaps I will even get the surplus to write album reviews - or participate in the Interactive Polls - but at the moment I can't promise anything.

I hope you all understand, and I wish you good luck in the poll.

Kind regards
Anders

English singer-Tony Barrows holds a special place in my heart. Barrows  sang lead for "First Class", "Edison Lighthouse", "Brotherhood Of Man", "White Plains",  "Tony Burrows", The Flower Pot Men" and "The Pipkins".   All had hit songs in the late 60s and early 70s.

The Flower Pot Men had Deep Purple founders Jon Lord on organ and Nick Simpler on bass. King Crimson alumni- Gordon Haskell also played bass for The Flower Pot Men.   Ironically, after Barrows left "Brotherhood Of Man" the band won the 1976 Eurovision Contest.

"Beach Baby",  "Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes"..."Let's Go To San Francisco" ,

Hi Anders, good to hear from you. Your contributions are missed. I can relate to struggles with mental health. My son, who is 19 and currently living with me, is diagnosed with type 1 autism (formerly called Asperger's) along with ADHD, and struggles with social interaction. Finding tools and routines is important. I wish you the best and hope you can join us again in these polls.

My choice of vocalist is Iggy Pop, who is still going on at age 76, and released his 19th album earlier this year.

He has been a guest vocalist for many artist. His best known band is the Stooges.

First up is the soundtrack to Arizon Dream, composed by Bosnian musician Goran Bregović. He has Iggy on vocals for four of the tracks.

Goran Bregović and Iggy Pop - In the Death Car

In 2021, Iggy play a couple of pieces by Belgian violinist/violist/compose Catherine Graindorge on his radio show. She wrote to thank and off-handedly suggested they collaborate. He said sure and the result is a 4-track EP with Iggy providing vocals on 3 of the tracks. The 4th is an instrumental titled "Iggy." I have posted this before in Greg's YouTube thread

Catherine Graindorge and Iggy Pop - The Dictator

Bonus third track, in respect to the recently passed Ryuichi Sakamoto, I select a track from Sakamoto's album Neo Geo.

Ryuichi Sakamoto and Iggy Pop - Risky

And unasked for fourth song because I love it. His only U.S. top 40 song with Kate Pierson of the B-52's

Iggy Pop and Kate Pierson - Candy

I go with Giuliano Palma, singer of Casino Royale and then leader of "Giuliano Palma & The Bluebeaters"

1) Casino Royale: "Ogni singolo giorno"

2) Giuliano Palma & The Bluebeaters: "Messico e Nuvole"

@Greg, I have a question. I have an artist in mind who performs in the first track with his band and in the second one with an orchestra (that song was arranged by the conductor of the orchestra). Both songs are written by the same person, though. Does that meet your guidelines?

Peter Hammill has made quite a few guest appearences on other artist's albums, some even as lead vocals. For example, here's two from Robert Fripp - Exposure:

Disengage

Chicago

And a third in which he duetted with Terre Roche:

I May Not Have Had Enough Of Me But I've Had Enough Of You

^ Funnily enough, or maybe not funny but because I am a fan, Robert Wyatt and Peter Hammill were two of the first I thought about when I said that I'd rather make this non-Prog (Robert Wyatt especially has been involved in so many things, and for a deemed-Prog artist edition with the same idea which I though I might do when it's my turn again, I would have wanted to cover him). Mind you, lots of artists who are considered Prog at PA have made music that I wouldn't call Prog, be it solo or in collaborations. And many others not in PA may have made music that individuals consider Prog. Prog can be a very proglematic term, or problematic I mean. I still would rather the focus be on tracks at least that one might not associate with Prog that much. I want to try to be accommodating, while at the same time I'm not comfortable with ignoring the guidelines when it comes to these topics. Not uncommon to adapt the rules depending upon others suggestions and limitations so that more can join in.

Anders: I can relate. Take care, hope you participate again at some time, and my PM box is open if you want to offload to someone who has some experience with such matters.

If they are under different project names, then I expect to be okay with it. I'm okay with the songs being written by the same person, and taking different collaborations into account. Maybe you would give me the name and I will look into it.

----------------------------

Note: I would think this is a pretty easy challenge. If one has a singer that one would like to represent, then a site like rateyourmusic will show different projects/ "Member of" and appears on when searching. Rateyourmusic is my main tool/ music resource. And I'm fine with people mentioning music that they discovered thanks to their research for this topic. A big joy of these polls to me is not only discovering new-to-mew music from others, as well as re-appraising and reacquainting myself with music, but also there can be some discovery and re-discovery for me when coming up with options. The Harold Budd, Elizabeth Fraser, Robin Guthrie & Simon Raymonde album I covered as my bonus is new to me, and the other two are older favourites of mine.

By the way, sorry getting back a bit late to this topic, but I've been very busy this last week and so staying away from even looking at PA else it distract me.

Ok, now that I have done more research into the guest appearances of Peter Hammill as lead vocals, I can submit two tracks by artists that are not in PA:

Notopia - Celebrating Life - Connect (feat. Peter Hammill)

Saro Cosentino - The Road To Now - The Joke (feat. Peter Hammill)

^ Thanks. Plenty of time to decide which will be your two main choices, and your additional "bonus" track (not required but would like three).

I was just reminded of Beth Gibbon of Portishead. I've covered Portishead a fair amount already, and would go with "The Rip" off Portisheads' Third, but I think I nominated that before (I adore that song off a too often neglected album, imo).

Here is Portishead's "It's a Fire ' (on some releases of Dummy, not on the one I had heard)

And Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man's - "Spider Monkey" off 2002's Out of Season

I want to mention a couple more "bonus" tracks featuring Beth Gibbons (there are a lot to choose from).

Rodrigo Leão featuring Beth Gibbons - "Carousel" (off the album Cinema from 2004)

Gonga (with Beth Gibbons) - "Black Sabbath" (off the 2014 Black Sabbath single) .

* I mention "It's a Fire" because it's lesser known and something of a bonus track on some Dummy issues (hadn't been on any I had heard). I've covered a lot of Portishead in various topics here but this is kind of different.

Yep, the focus is on singers involved in several musical ventures (solo, bands, collaboration of some sort, singing a song for a band/artist....)

No hurry, the voting in Mila's poll isn't complete, and it may never be complete, but I don't expect much attention to this while that process is ongoing. Not that I specifically have looked to see who and how many have not yet registered their votes, but that was my impression.

The tracks are under different project names in so far as the artist on the second track only appears as a featured artist. Thanks for offering your help but I doubt you know the artist. She comes from La Réunion, an island in the Indian Ocean, near Madagascar. - In any case I will choose an artist from outside the western cultural sphere that is already well represented here. :P

Maybe you'll bring in some metal as well even if out of competition. I for one need some metal in my diet and too often forgot how much metal I really enjoy, including metal singers.

I'm pretty good at research, so figured I could help with the aid of a search engine and searching some music websites if I knew the details. I'm somewhat familiar with Christine Salem, but no others that I can think of, but of course I could search.

My first thoughts on the topic were Ted Leonard, Anneke van Giersbergen and Ray Alder.

Ted Leonard (Enchant, Xen, Affector, Spock's Beard, Thought Chamber, Pattern-Seeking Animals)
Anneke (The Gathering, solo, Vuur, Devin Townsend, and I'm sure there are others, i just listen to these LOL)
Ray Alder (Fates Warning, Engine, Redemption, solo, A-Z, Figure of Speechless)

there's also Michael Kiske (Helloween, solo, Place Vendome, Unisonic, and I'm sure a lot of guesting)
Jorn Lande (Ark, Masterplan, solo and many others, I just listen to these three).

I also looked for videos of a Romanian musician/song-writer that also sings, a guitarist rather than a vocalist, if i find something, I'll definitely post here, might even be my nomination. Smile

If they are under different project names, then I expect to be okay with it. I'm okay with the songs being written by the same person, and taking different collaborations into account. Maybe you would give me the name and I will look into it.
I'm pretty good at research, so figured I could help with the aid of a search engine and searching some music websites if I knew the details. I'm somewhat familiar with Christine Salem, but no others that I can think of, but of course I could search.
Oh, great you know Christine Salem! I had a young rock musician in mind but I think I will bring her on another occasion. It is also about showing the musical diversity of an artist after all, isn't it? Smile

My choice, which may seem a little unusual at first glance, is Richard Bona, best known as one of the most sought-after jazz bassists, worldwide. However, based on his first solo albums, we can see/hear that he is also a gifted vocalist. It was not easy to make a selection from Bona's rich and varied oeuvre, but I finally decided on the following three tracks:

The 1st song, a duet with the famous Malian musician Salif Keïta, is from his third solo studio album Munia/The Tale, 2003. Solo album in this context includes his own band.

Richard Bona ft. Salif Keïta: Kalabancoro

The 2nd song is from his second collaborative album with Gérald Toto FRA/MTQ and Lokua Kanza COG (Bondeko, 2017). Bona himself is from Cameroon btw.

Toto Bona Lokua: Ma Mama

And finally, a 3rd song from his latest collaboration with the Cuban jazz pianist Alfredo Rodriguez with whom he has toured extensively over the last few years. I was lucky enough to attend their fantastic concert in Switzerland!

Richard Bona & Alfredo Rodriguez: Raíces/Roots

I don't know yet how I should classify the three chosen tracks here, because actually all three would fit into the main category imo. The first suggested track is from Bona's solo project which includes his own band plus a guest vocalist. As a bassists he's played in plenty of jazz bands, on a few occasions he has also provided vocals, but I find those tracks musically less interesting and accordingly they are also quite jazzy of course which does not necessarily correspond to the general taste in a rock oriented forum.

@Greg, what do you think?

^ Mila, I like it in the order you presented. Those first two Bona songs for the "main" (those two are my faves of the three) and the third for the Bon[a]us. Good variety on those tracks and nice to see it become more wordly.

LoL I've meanwhile specified my question (see above). Accordingly track no. 1 from the solo album would most likely fit into the bonus category, don't you think?

^ It doesn't really matter to me much how people want to order it, but sure. I want to be pretty easy-going even though I often do go overboard with rules (which humours me and annoys others sometimes). Feel free to order it as you best think fits. :) I trust people's judgment, mostly.... Well, other than my own judgment.

^ I'm holding off to give more people a chance to vote in your poll before putting this one up, although most have. In the meantime, people can mention as many applicable trios and duos as they want. I probably will put this up the weekend after next unless someone else is aching for a turn at making an Interactive Poll and wants this one to have moved on....

I put together the OP really quickly this time without much thought, quite spontaneous, which is a reason why I'm not too concerned about such placement matters. I had the basic idea and then immediately threw this together.

^ Don't worry, Greg. 6/9 people have voted in the previous poll. As mentioned earlier, the concept was intended for a smaller number of participants. Surprisingly more people joined in than expected, which is great but accordingly the listening time became longer. Put up your poll whenever you think it's right. Obviously, everything is unpredictable here, whatever we do. But the main thing is that the IP's go on! Smile

I will offer up another vocalist in contrast to Iggy Pop. This vocalist/musician is Meg Baird. She's on PA with the prog-folk band Espers. She's currently the vocalist/drummer for psych-folk rock band Heron Oblivion. She has solo and collaborative releases as well.

I've only peripherally heard of Meg Baird through Espers and I am not too familiar with the prog-folk subgenre. In any case, Heron Oblivion popped up on my Amazon recommendations this week and absolutely loved it. Then found out the singer is Meg Baird whose name I recognized in Espers. Heron Oblivion has one album from 2016.

Heron Oblivion - Oriar

Then there is this great Blue Öyster Cult cover by Espers.

Espers - Flaming Telepaths

Bonus track is from a collaboration with harpist Mary Lattimore. They released their album in 2018.

Meg Baird & Mary Lattimore - Damaged Sunset

My second trio is dedicated to Manou Gallo, an Ivorian bassist, singer, and former member of Zap Mama. She's the female equivalent to Richard Bona, so to speak (my first suggestion, on page 2 of this thread).

The 1st track is from her album Afro Groove Queen, 2016. She is here joined by a fellow ex-member of Zap Mama who is also a very successful solo artist.

Manou Gallo ft. Sabine Kabongo: Dodo

On the 2nd track she appears as a featured artist on the sophomore album of a young and talented Mozambican jazz saxophonist (Ndzuti, 2012).

Ivan Mazuze ft. Manou Gallo: Nwana Wa Ku Kasa

And finaly the 3rd track is from her latest album Aliso, 2021.

Manou Gallo: Lady

@Greg, could you please tell me, which of the two artists you prefer, Richard Bona or Manou Gallo? I don't expect you to listen to the whole thing, of course. A brief impression would already be helpful. :)

First batch of listening (hope to pursue...):

Greg: Both Cocteau Twins and Massive Attack never conquered much of my attention. Generally a good listen, as is the case here, but not something I would return to a lot. The third track, by Harold Budd, Elizabeth Fraser, Robin Guthrie & Simon Raymonde is the most interesting to my ears.

I prophesy disaster: Ow, prog! ;) Never explored much of Isildurs Bane, and it will not become a sudden thing to do, but this is quite an interesting track. The Amorphous Androgynous track is also quite intriguing, bu a bit chaotic (because it is a short condensed verion? I might try to listen to the longer version of it).

Christian: Rainbirds start of nicely but I'm loosing a bit of my interest further on. Not uninteresting, but I'm much more intrigued by the FM Einheit track and think that her solo song, Wind Was Playing With My Hair, very beautiful.

suitkees: What? Just when you're falling asleep someone rings at the door...

Cindy: Good, after my depressing offerings something joyfully uplifting. Very Beach Boys-like selection. It's quite enjoyable, although this is not my preferred genre of music and it won't stick with me for long.

George: I'm very familiar with this Goran Bregovic track and enjoy it very much, as I enjoy - but a bit less the track with Sakamoto and his own and famous Candy. But the big stand-out here, to me, is Iggy Pop's duet with Catherine Graindorge, who I discover here and I'm very pleasantly surpised. Wonderful track.

Suite...

Lorenzo: Giuliano Palma with Casino Royale delivers a nice melodic rock song. I'm not fond of his voice, though, but the music is good. Much better than the hoompa-big-band-mariachi-reggea of Messico e Nuvole, with the Bluebeaters. Really? ;)

I prophesy disaster: When I'm in the mood I quite like this album Exposure by Robert Fripp, and Hammill contributes greatly to that appreciation, but Disengage is maybe my least favourite of them all - sounds like a misguided attempt to do some hard rock. I prefer the derailed blues rock of Chicago or the punky VDGG-Crimsony I May Not Have... However, I'm most postitively and pleasantly surprised by both your Notopia and Saro Cosentino suggestions; wonderfully atmospheric and simply great!

Greg: Beth Gibbons! Yes, we've seen/heard her before from you, but when it's good, it's good. I like the It's a Fire track - didn't know that one before. The rather subdued-but-building-up track with Rustin Man is also a great listen. The one with Rodrigo Leão is nice too, but not really captivating me and the Gonga one sounds like a cheap pastiche, actually: not bad, but not original enough.

Mila: Without knowing, I knew this song of Richard Bona with Salif Keïta; nice, but it is not something that will stay long with me. Same impression with Toto Bona Lokua. From your three suggestions I'm most taken by the song with Alfredo Rodriguez; very beautiful.

My nomination: Richard Bona

For the main category two songs from his collaborative albums:

1. Richard Bona & Alfredo Rodriguez: Raíces/Roots
2. Toto Bona Lokua: Ma Mama

And as a bonus track a song from his solo album:

3. Richard Bona ft. Salif Keïta: Kalabancoro

Sorry for being absent, and not getting back to you, Mila. Been busy so I have been checking in on PA regularly. I am going to wait some more before I put up the poll, maybe a couple of days. Hopefully by then everyone will have their selections sorted and listed and I can focus a little more. And Mila, I liked both of your choices of selections, but might have stuck with Bona myself.

And thanks Kees for the comments on the songs.

If anyone has not decided or made their final choices clear (I haven't looked through the thread carefully), please do so very soon. And a third bonus track is appreciated if possible.

^ Thanks  for the feedback, Greg! Good to know that you also have a slight preference for Bona.

As for your own choice, have you edited your post in the meantime? You mentioned earlier that you were a bit torn between your two options. In case you are still interested in a feedback, from my  point of view, it doesn't matter so much which of the two vocalists you choose but rather in which way you present them. Given that you have covered Coceau Twins and esp. Portishhead a fair amount already I think that this is a good opportunity to focus on their vocalists as artists in their own right or at least to show their artistic diversity in one way or another. You could still refer to the band they come from in parentheses e.g. or bring the band as a bonus track.

Btw. I learned from the previous poll that this concept of multiple entries per participant can be tricky. As the number of participants grows, the number of spots in the poll decreases quickly, even more so if you give people more time to join in.

Yes, and I edited it quite badly. I had since decided on Elizabeth Fraser and din't want others to feel compelled to present feedback, which I might just ignore anyway, although I do appreciate it.

While I felt there was some variety in the songs I chose, I am more interested in showcasing the kinds of music that most speak to me and exhibit my tastes than in showcasing, say, the versatility of the artist (unless that is the challenge given explicitly). The music I share reflects on me, and I do like to highlight music that I deeply care about no matter how representative or diverse. Most of all, I got to do it "my way". ;) Sensible things to consider that you bring up, though. Also I actually don't want to be as influenced by what I think others will like as by what I like as I'm not trying for "votes", which is a reason why I removed the having difficulty deciding comment. I do very much enjoy reading people's thoughts on the music that I and others suggest.

I will go with another selection, partially to highlight other Fraser music I care about.

Yann Tiersen with Elizabeth Fraser - Kala

I was tempted to go with Fraser's cover of Chic's "At Last I am Free" but Wyatt covered that best. Two of my favourites of hers that are not Cocteau Twins are longer songs (about nine minutes each) and had I not requested shorter tracks than I would have liked to include This Mortal Coil's Sixteen Days/ Gathering Dust and The Future Sound of London's Lifeform (Path 4). I do think that Massive Attack's Teardrop is just too famous a song and I have mentioned it before. Massive Attack's "Black Milk" with Fraser is also well-known, and also is very much liked by me.

Here is The Future Sound of London's Lifeform (Part 4) with Elizabeth Fraser on vocals. It is a couple of minutes longer than I had wanted at max for a song in this poll, but I like it so much, and so I think I will put it in the bonus section.

I don't wish to do Elizabeth Fraser without Cocteau Twins, and I will go with "In the Gold Dust Rush" (off head Over Heels).

My three choices will be:

1. Yann Tiersen with Elizabeth Fraser - Kala
2. Cocteau Twins with Elizabeth Fraser - In the Gold Dust Rush

Bonus:

The Future Sound of London with Elizabeth Fraser - Lifeform (Part 4)

Edited for typos.

I plan to have the poll up by tomorrow -- would happily do it tonight, but I like to run the list by people in case of mistakes and to verify people's choices before putting them up.

Lewian:
Rainbirds (Katharina Franck) - Waltz for Jane
FM Einheit w/ Katharina Franck - Educacao
Bonus: Katharina Franck - Wind Was Playing With My Hair

Suitkees
Stuart Staples - Willow (from the soundtrack of High Life, 2018)
Micatone - Handbrake (featuring Stuart Staples)
Tindersticks - Frozen

omphaloskepsis:
First Class - Beach Baby (Tony Barrows)
Edison Lighthouse - "Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes" (Tony Barrows)
The Flower Pot Men - "Let's Go To San Francisco" (Tony Barrows)

or

Free - Fire and Water (Paul Rogers)
Bad Company - Silver, Blue And Gold (Paul Rogers)
The Firm - Midnight Moonlight (Pual Rogers)
Queen + Paul Rodgers Reaching Out

mathman0806:
Goran Bregović and Iggy Pop - In the Death Car
Catherine Graindorge and Iggy Pop - The Dictator
Bonus: Ryuichi Sakamoto and Iggy Pop - Risky

or

Heron Oblivion with Meg Baird - Oriar
Espers with Meg Baird - Flaming Telepaths
Meg Baird & Mary Lattimore - Damaged Sunset

jamesbaldwin:
Treat Her Right (Mark Sandman) - I Think She Likes Me
Morphine (Mark Sandman) - Free Love

I prophecy disaster:
Notopia - Celebrating Life - Connect (feat. Peter Hammill)
Saro Cosentino - The Road To Now - The Joke (feat. Peter Hammill)
Bonus: Isildurs Bane & Peter Hammill - In Amazonia - Before You Know It

Mila-13:
1. Richard Bona ft. Salif Keïta: Kalabancoro
2. Richard Bona & Alfredo Rodriguez: Raíces/Roots
Bonus: Toto Bona Lokua: Ma Mama

Cristi
Steve Hogarth with How we Live - All the Time in the World
Steve Hogarth & Richard Barbieri - Red Kite
Bonus: Europeans - "Going to Work (Long Version)" (feat. Steve Hogarth)

Logan:
1. Yann Tiersen with Elizabeth Fraser - Kala
2. Cocteau Twins with Elizabeth Fraser - In the Gold Dust Rush
Bonus: The Future Sound of London with Elizabeth Fraser - Lifeforms (Part 4)

So that's 9 of us, and Andy has not had the chance to choose. We have 26 tracks (Lorenzo only did two). No problem, I'll do my bonus track as a write-in vote (we all are supposed two write our choices in a post anyway) and leave it off the poll itself while still having that track participating in the choices.

I'm guessing that George is going with Iggy Pop over Meg Baird if I'm reading into things right? Love both choices. Not sure which one Cindy (Ompha) is choosing, but if none is decided by tomorrow then I will go with the first trio. and with Cristi unless specified otherwise, I will go with your first three H choices. And if not specified as bonus generally, then I will place the third listed track as bonus (as I think would be expected).

Edited for Cristi and Mila choice edits.

Hey Greg, no lines to be read on this. I am equally torn between selecting Iggy or Meg. I am leaning toward Meg because: (1) she is lesser known and deserves to be heard more, (2) I have previously nominated Iggy as a member of the Stooges with the song "1969" for the 60's poll, and (3) Meg would add another female vocalist as the majority is male.

I might think about it some more but if you don't hear from me again before you put up the poll, go with Meg as my nominee. Plus I have been enjoying the Heron Oblivion album this past week.

If I am ranking my own suggestions at this moment:

1) Oriar
2) The Dictator
3) Flaming Telepaths
4) In the Death Car
5) Damaged Sunset
6) Risky

It shouldn't say The Europeans featuring Steve Hogarth, after all Steve sang and played keyboards in that band, but i guess it's a way to get some attention.

I hadn't planned to present it the same way as in the video title, but I do want to specify the singer in all of the poll options, say as The Europeans - Going to Work (Steve Hogarth).

Maybe that Genesis live show broadcast CD would have worked well with a "featuring Phil Collins" had Collin's Genesis played the debut or the second album... As in From Genesis to Revelation and Trespass now featuring Miami vice alumnus, the Artful Dodger himself, Phil "Su-Sussudio " Collins on vocals and drums.

From The Book of Genesis

In the beginning Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Chris Stewart, Anthony Phillips and Mike Rutherford created Genesis.
And the Genesis was without Phil;
Stewart, Silver, then Mayhew, was upon the fills of the band
And the archangel Gabriel was the voice of the land.
Then Genesis Gods said, Let there be Phil, and there was Collins.
And They saw that it was Good (while some others complained).

^^ Incompetent probably, much like me typing prophecy rather than prophesy before. That said, I prefer propheticise as in I turned a tidey prophet when I propheticised on that hoarse winning. ;)

I have heard one person say that Genesis stopped truly being Genesis when Gabriel left, and I've heard that about Hackett despite him not even being around on the earliest albums. For some Genesis truly starts at Nursery Cryme, and for some others with Genesis' self-titled, which doesn't mean much.

I can add the Frumpy and Atlantis tracks to the poll -- hope you participate in the listening and voting process. It will mean adding more bonus combos since that brings us to 28, but I think that's fine. I had wished to try to avoid Prog (but hadn't banned it outright), and maybe do a Prog edition at some time, but that's fine and neither track is very long, so good to have you on board, Jean. I've been concerned about you and Jean and it's very good to see you around again, so actually I am pleased to add your selections no matter what.

we were working on our latest musical project, the 6-women band Dark Goddesses, in which we all represent a Greek Goddess. Friede represents Περσεφόνη (Persephóne, the Goddess of the Underworld), our daughters Alice and Dorothy and my sister Beatrice represent the 3 Erinyes (Goddesses that punish Crimes; Alice represents Ἀληκτώ (Alectó, the Punisher of Moral Crimes), Dorothy represents Τισιφόνη (Tisiphóne, the Punisher of Murder) and Beatrice represents Μέγαιρα (Mégaera, the Punisher of Marital Infidelity), Charlotte, the wife of Beatrice, represents Ἔρις (Éris, the Goddess of Strife, Discord and Chaos) and I represent Ἑκάτη (Hecáte, the Goddess of Witchcraft). we will have a great stage show with all Goddesses flying in one by one, only the Erinyes flying in as a trio, and equally taking off when the show is over. and we will all look very fearsome (for example, all 6 Goddesses have occasionally been depicted as having snakes as hair, so we will all wear special snake wigs with artificial snakes that really move, designed by a friend of us who is a mechatronics wizard; each wig consists of 30 snakes that really move)

Greg, what about publishing exceptionally the entire list of bonus tracks in the OP? The space in the poll slots is quite limited and it will be difficult to put the artist names and song titles of two entries next to each other.- You could inform people about the voting procedure by using the remaining space in the poll table e.g.

^ I hope you film your stage show. I'd love to see and listen to it.

--------------------

This poll will be going up very shortly.

I have separated this into two sections, the first being the main one with two selections from everybody and the bonus with one more selection from most people. As we are at 28 entries, and a poll maxes out at 25 options, I have decided to combine 8 bonus entries into 4 poll lines, which leaves an extra space for an Intermission between the main entries and the bonuses.

Main:

Lewian:
Rainbirds - Waltz for Jane (Katharina Franck)
FM Einheit w/ Katharina Franck - Educacao

Suitkees
High Life Soundtrack - Willow (Stuart Staples)
Micatone - Handbrake (featuring Stuart Staples)

I prophesy disaster:
Notopia - Connect (feat. Peter Hammill)
Saro Cosentino - The Joke (feat. Peter Hammill)

Mila-13:
Richard Bona ft. Salif Keïta - Kalabancoro
Richard Bona & Alfredo Rodriguez - Raíces/Roots

mathman0806:
Heron Oblivion - Oriar (Meg Baird)
Espers - Flaming Telepaths (Meg Baird)

jamesbaldwin:
Treat Her Right - I Think She Likes Me (Mark Sandman)
Morphine - Free Love (Mark Sandman)

omphaloskepsis:
Free - Fire and Water (Paul Rogers)
Bad Company - Silver, Blue And Gold (Paul Rogers)

Cristi
How we Live - All the Time in the World (Steve Hogarth)
Steve Hogarth & Richard Barbieri - Red Kite

Logan:
Yann Tiersen with Elizabeth Fraser - Kala
Cocteau Twins - In the Gold Dust Rush (Elizabeth Fraser)

Baldjean:
Frumpy - Take Care of Illusion (Inga Rumpf)
Atlantis - It's Getting Better (Inga Rump)

INTERMISSION (not intended for votes)

Bonus:
Lewian: Katharina Franck - Wind Was Playing With My Hair

Europeans - Going to Work (Hogarth) OR The Future Sound of London w/ Fraser - Lifeforms Pt. 4

Note: While I said that I would go with Cindy's first three mentions unless told otherwise, I took it on myself to include the second three of here four choices from Paul Rogers. I found The Firm's "Midnight Moonlight" too good not to include.

I ask that people vote for three songs with three different singers in the main poll, and please vote for two songs in the bonus poll (if you did not include a bonus option, then voting here is optional or should it be more optional?). Please specify which songs you voted for in a post.

Here is the nominees playlist, which I also will add to the opening post.

With 29 videos, well if I include the fun little Intermission which does not count for voting, I expect people to take their time.

It's this one, which doesn't work for me:

While that doesn't work for me and I can't see it in the playlist (hidden), I was able to add it to the playlist methinks at the end of it. I wish I could easily rearrange it as I did once before to have it next to the other vid. I think I add mnage to arrange it properly in the playlist. Does it show up in the playlist for you now (and the other should be hidden for you)?

^ @Greg, yes, it's that one. I can see it now (it's the same for all Europeans, I think). It should be track no. 11, right before 'Morphine'. I guess you can't rearrange the playlist with a video that you cannot see. If so, I can make another 'European' playlist, but later today because I'm at work.

^ Thanks, but no need methinks. And I think I have now managed to rearrange it, and make that stick. I know I could have done it by starting the playlist again when coming to add that video, but I was able to reorganise it with a playlist option to show unavailable videos.

By the way, sometimes what works in Europe, and not in the US, works in Canada, and sometime that which works in the US is blocked in Canada and Europe. I have had the most issues with Lorenzo's videos being blocked here, but also with quite a few videos from the US.

I missed this comment before as I was busy preparing my post for the poll at the time, which I guess addressed this anyway if not intentionally I just saw this now. While the bonus section is crowded, I think it should be easy enough to follow for anyone dedicated and attentive enough to be participating in the poll. I do have the master list in order and the videos in the playlist are in order, so not that hard to get it right

Since it is on the last page, and the first, I'll post it here again.

And here is the playlist for just the nominees:

25. Europeans - Going to Work (Steve Hogarth) OR The Future Sound of London (aka FSOL) w/ Fraser - Lifeforms Pt. 4

The OR can be an AND if those are your two choices from the bonuses. In the poll I used / to sperate and had to shorten, but one can use this for comparison if it proves at all difficult. This is how I put it there.

22. Katharina Franck: Wind Was / Tindersticks: Frozen (S Staples
23. Isildurs Bane & Hammill: Before You../ Toto Bona L.: Ma Mama
24. Baird & Lattimore: Damaged.../ The Firm: Midnight...(Rogers)
25. Europeans: Going to Work (Hogarth)/ FSOL w Fraser: Lifeforms

It's a bit of a squeeze in the bonuses, but I wanted to fit them all in and have an Intermission. I hope it's not too hard for people to follow.

So, getting to the verdict...
This was a very good playlist to listen to; thanks to all! But it is also very hard to come to a decision for the 3 + 2 votes. I won't go through it again though, because it is also a bit time consuming. So, partly the famous toss-up had to do it's work again. Since this poll centers around the singers, I will privilege those tracks in which the singer has somehow a dominant place...

From the main category, my votes could have gone to Mark Sandman/Treat Her Right, Meg Baird and Steve Hogarth with Barbieri (I actually think that Hogarth is one of the great pop/rock singers nowadays and I listened to this album when it came out; I enjoyed it but as a whole album a bit to mellow on the long run), but my votes finally go to (in order of appearance):
- Saro Cosentino - The Joke (feat. Peter Hammill)
- Bad Company - Silver, Blue And Gold (with Paul Rodgers with a "d"; great singer and a very pleasant pop-rock track)
- Yann Tiersen with Elizabeth Fraser - Kala (I have the album this is from, "Les retrouvailles", but that doesn't stop me from voting for it)

And from the bonus section Isildurs Bane stands out, but 1: it is prog, and 2: I already voted for Hammill above. I could also vote for The Firm, but again I already voted for Paul Rodgers above. My votes go to the beautiful singsters (for their beautiful songs, of course):
- Katharina Franck - Wind Was Playing With My Hair
- Meg Baird & Mary Lattimore: Damaged Sunset

A well meant "bravo!" to all. Clap

Not really necessary: if you click on the menu button of the playlist embed to unfold the menu, you have access to all the links you want with just a right click on each video.
And you could also just say "thank you for the playlist" instead of asking someone to do more work for your convenience...

Thanks very much for the votes, and for the comments (again!), Kees. Sometimes I have regretted second-guessing my self, but this time I was really glad I did due to the Yann Tiersen (Yann Tiersen is so great) and FSOL tracks particularly. I had put almost no thought into my original selection.

I'm thinking Friede might mean a link to all that have been mentioned (not just the nominated ones), otherwise I would not see why the playlist option is not a good one.

Friede, I know Kees addressed this, but easy access to all the music nominees and a link to listening to all the nominated are all in one post (on this page, the last page and the first post) with the youtube playlist I created which I have a hyperlink to on youtube and an embed. That said, I also posted all tracks mentioned in this poll in a youtube playlist in the original post that includes a playlist url link as well as an embed which you can use to view and listen to the list. Here they are again...

1. A link to the playlist of all songs posted in this topic:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXcp9fYc6K4JuI7T3Xy9-YhO_YLeg6Sce" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXcp9fYc6K4JuI7T3Xy9-YhO_YLeg6Sce

An am embed where you can view and shuffle through all songs posted in these pages.

2. A link to the youtube playlist just for the nominated tracks (plus the Intermission).

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXcp9fYc6K4KUB6zJuKcbVOniE_dMyB6s" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXcp9fYc6K4KUB6zJuKcbVOniE_dMyB6s

Since George (Mathman) started doing it, youtube playlist such as those have become the standard for these polls. I find it more convenient to listen to than following individual hyperlinks to each video from the thread (and listing all of those as embeds in one post would be way, way too many for page load).
The advantage of the playlist embed is that it's ad free. Listening to the playlist on youtube is fine for me too as it's ad free for me too there, and even on my phone I can play in background when I set it to desktop site. I pay for a youtube subscription for my eldest, but I admit to using adblock software very often.

EDIT: Forgot to mention if you're not familiar with embedded playlists, if you click on the icon at the upper ight of the video where it says, say for the complete playlist, 1/55, the complete playlist will drop down which you can choose to play and scroll through. I find the functionality very convenient, and it's easy to navigate to the video where you can scrub (move) through the songs for reminding one.

If you or Jean have any problems with those, please let me know and I will try to help. I hope you enjoy your listening.

PS I caught the making youtube playlists bug and if include song playlists to go with polls of mine, and I love listening to those playlists while driving. Here is a direct link to my channel's playlists (not that I would expect those other than me to care). https://www.youtube.com/@gregorydemasse9831/playlists" rel="nofollow - CLICK

Quite a few votes without messages. Kers voted for his five, which means three from the main and two from the bonus (plus being naughty, he voted for Intermission) and we have eight unaccounted votes (one for Rainbirds came even before I added the song options to the poll.

While I am happy for both those who participated in the nomination process and for those who didn't to vote, I ask that before voting you acquaint yourself with the options (listen to the playlist, if you don't listen to every second of every song, fine, whatever), then vote for three songs with different singers in the main, and two tracks from the bonus (it's fine if that shares a singer from the main that you voted for a song by before). Along with the votes, for this interactive series, one is expected to write a post that states what one voted for. I always write vote for in polls, but for to be a more interactive and social experience, it really helps to share your votes and your thoughts/ comments if you have any to go along with it.

And for the contestants, I should think all should know this already as none of us are completely new to this, but one shouldn't vote for one's own.

And remember that each bonus line has two options (see my list in an earlier post if it helps with any confusion due to how crowded those lines got). You can vote for a bonus option twice if it contains your two favourite songs in the bonus section (jean has not been involved with many, so just a reminder).

I wasn't as clear or detailed in the OP as I sometimes have been.

This is one where I really would like to vote for three in the bonus:

My "Main" votes:

1. High Life Soundtrack - Willow (Stuart Staples)
2. Notopia - Connect (feat. Peter Hammill)
3. Espers - Flaming Telepaths (knew it already, but nice to hear is again)

Bonuses:

1. Tindersticks - Frozen (Stuart Staples) Yes I voted for a Staples one in the main and bonus, but this is such a highlight of the poll for me, and one can vote for a bonus singer that got a vote in the main from you. Excellent stuff.
2. Katharina Franck - Wind Was Playing With My Hair (love this)

So one option got two votes from me as they share the 22nd poll option space.

I also had very much wanted to vote for Meg Baird & Mary Lattimore's Damaged Sunset, which I really love too. Anyway, nice that Baird and Franck got votes from me in different sections and I was tempted to change the rules to accommodate three votes in the bonus section., but I like it when it's not that easy and I'd rather have more that I would like to vote for than less.

Thanks to all as it has been a wonderful listening experience and there's much more that I like here.

^ The idea was to vote in the main for three songs with three different singers, and then vote for two bonus selections (regardless of whether you voted for that singer in the main). I don't think I started my first post originally with that, so no big deal, and added that to the message I wrote when I put up the poll as I recall.

I hope Cindy was okay with my selection. Usually, unless specified otherwise, I will go with the original choices.

Just to reiterate the guidelines....

For voting:

1. Listen to the nominated tracks (all are available through the playlist I created). If you did not add bonus tracks, then listening to and voting for the bonus tracks is optional.
2. Vote for three songs with three different singers in the main poll (before Intermission) that are not your own choices.
3. Vote for two songs in the bonus section (after Intermission) regardless of whether you voted for that singer before -- if you have no bonuses in the bonus section, then this is optional.
4. List what you voted for in a post (three from main plus two from bonus). Further comments are appreciated but not necessary

Again, thanks to all.

Since this poll centers around the singers, I will focus on the artists who convinced me most vocally, also through their artistic versatility that is recognisable from the songs chosen. Of course, the compositions themselves were also taken into account. The division into main and side categories were not really significant for me, though,

Therefore my votes will go to (in order of appearance):

Main category
Espers (Meg Baird): Flaming Telepaths
Steve Hogarth & Richard Barbieri: Red Kite
Elizabeth Fraser & Yann Tiersen: Kala

Side category
Katharina Franck: Wind Was Playing With My Hair
The Firm (Paul Rogers): Midnight Moonlight

Thank you for the music everybody and many thanks for hosting, Greg. An interesting theme indeed! Thumbs Up

^ Thanks Mila. Splitting it into a main and bonus category is not really useful when it comes to those who nominate three tracks, but for those who only wished to nominate two tracks I thought it useful, and then also they had the option of only listening to and voting for three form the main, that then has utility. It worked out pretty well, I think. On the other hand, it may be a rather too confusing or too out-of-the ordinary system for some.

If I were to do another tomorrow, and I hope someone else does, I might go back to a simple nominate just one track and have the whole thing last just one week (might help with momentum). Maybe one of the participants of this or the last few who hasn't done one yet would like to try (fun to have some new ideas and new creative approaches).

^ It died -- not as much interest in these as there used to be and few wish to organise these things. I do enjoy a slightly more spontaneous approach and surprises.   And I do think it better to be more low-key and have these less frequent for a while actually else everyone loses interest. Lorenzo isn't around much, hope he's okay, and some other primary organisers are not visiting the forums much anymore. I'm fine with just discussing such things in the latest Interactive Poll. By the way, Mila, do you post in non Interactive Poll topics at PA? Not expecting it, but unusual to see someone come here and just be involved in such a limited number of kinds of topics. Of course you don't need to, but I would enjoy your presence around the forums more in a wide variety of discussions. Not sure what even brought you to these Prog shores -- many people here are still so mysterious to me (I feel like I know so little about them after years at the forum together).

There is actually not much of a mystery about my participation here. I learned about the interactive polls through Anders who I know from another music forum. I think I mentioned that a couple of times. Prog is not necessarily my main interest and rock music, esp. the older stuff in general but I always enjoy learning something new, outside my comfort zone. As for the other threads on PA, I do take a look at them now and then, esp. in the general music discussions section (which is a sufficient dose of prog for me :P), but there's usually not much interaction going on, as far as I can remember. People mostly just post their music or lists of favourite releases. But there are certainly exceptions, I guess. :)
