I bought the Lamb lies on Broadway recently and I was surprised how much darker the sound of Genesis in this album is when you compare it with Nursery, Foxtrot and Selling. But that does not make it bad for my ears!!!
So, what albums from a band sounds difeerent than the rest?
An other good example is Relayer, which sounds also very different than the rest of Yes albums.
A...and this only goes for bands that have a sound that they mantained over the years...so no King Crimson!!! jejeje

Dredg - El Cielo, a major improvement after Leitmotif (which is still a great record). Dredg matured so fast, i couldnt believe this was the same band that made leitmotif only 2 years before.

Definitely IQ-Dark Matter! it is the first time IQ only uses vintage-like keyboards.

Well I definately agree with what you said about Genesis, Did you read my review of 'The Lamb...' I Posted Recently. It's obvious but i'll say it anyway, Yes' first two records are so different from 'The Yes Album', But they're still both excellent. Pink Floyd always changed too. The sound of 'The Dark Side of the Moon' compared to 'Wish you Were Here' is extremely different, and then 'Animals' again.

My choice include:
Somnambulist - The Paranormal Humidor (much darker than their first
album)
Citizen Cain - Playing Dead (Darker with prog metal overtones not found
in the previous albums)
Yes - Relayer (Much darker than their previous albums)
Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (The darkest album in their
catalog)
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Each of their albums is darker than the
one that came before it. And stranger too.

You guys think The Lamb is the darkest album in the Genesis catalog? That's
interesting, I never thought that. Onto albums that are different sounding...
Most King Crimson, specifically "Lark's Tongues in Aspic."
"Frances the Mute"
"Tales from Topographic Oceans"

You can't say that. That eliminating the point of the post. Most Crimson
albums are different and don't sound like anything else. In fact I would say
Crimson is the King at writing completely different compositions not
resembling much of any other band, so this taking Crimson out would take a
lot out of this thread.

VDGG's 'Still Life' sound much lighter and "cleaner" than their other albums, IMO.
Also, Brand X' 'Masques' sounds more tight and slightly different that 'Moroccan Roll' and 'Unorthodox Behaviour'

I'd say that Rush is one of the most un-static sounding bands as far as
the music goes. Through the years, it seems every other album had
a sound change.
You can pair them up and notice the progression of sound. Take the first 10 albums:
- Rush & Fly By Night
- Caress of Steel & 2112
- A Farewell to Kings & Hemispheres
- Permanent Waves & Moving Pictures
- Signals & Grace Under Pressure

I was gonna say that. The difference between RUSH and FLY BY NIGHT is like night and day. RUSH sounds a bit (ok; a LOT!) like Zep, while FBN came out of nowhere. "By-Tor and the Snow Dog"? What the hell was that?

I'm gonna split the fence and say no. CARESS OF STEEL was, while I think it's a great album, noisy and chaotic by comparison. It seemed to me that they were still trying to find their feet (a trait, I must say, FBN shared as well, IMO). 2112 was TOTALLY different from COS. From 2112 to AFTK to Hemispheres to Perm Wav., they constantly changed. Whereas 2112 had one side track and a bunch of short (mostly twee) tunes, AFTK was 2 songs over 10 minutes and a bunch of shorter songs. Hemispheres was, like 2112, one epic track. And it progressed from there, to, say, Moving Pictures, which was one 10 minute song and some shorter stuff.
OK...enough of my rant. Carry on...lol

ARGENT : COUNTERPOINTS (1975) is much more progressive than their self-titled debut album.

Coheed and Cambria's In Keeping Secrets... has an entirely different sound than their debut The Second Stage Turbine Blade. Come to think of it, Good Apollo... is different too, but it wasn't as big of a change. Their albums are all very different among themselves too. They're all fantastic records as well.
Obviously, Opeth's Damnation is different. Their albums all have differences, but they've all been in a steady progression, where as Damnation was far seperated from the rest.
Radiohead made a big change from OK Computer to Kid A.
I agree with Con Safo's comment on Dredg.

Arena's Contagion was much different sounding than their earlier stuff,
then Pepper's Ghost was similar to their earlier stuff, but had a
heavier, metallic edge to it.
Marillion's Brave was dark and unlike anything they had done before.
Although I haven't heard all of Saga's catalog, their Generation 13 is really different from their more popular releases of the early 1980's.
Just a few examples from recent groups that came to my mind. I think you'll find most groups will have one album (or more!) that is different than their "usual sound." Most of the truly best groups will evolve from album to album. The key being that their work remains of high quality.
