I guess this is the best place to post this..
I've just been speaking to Simon (sigod) and he suggested a provisional date for folks in the London area to meet up for a curry. Obviously anyone is welcome if they're happy to travel..
I know chopper, Phil, richardh & Syzygy have all been up for this for a while now..
How are folk fixed for
Saturday 21st January??

I'm surprised you had to ask! Oh, ok lets make it 2006 then..
So how about it, Nutter? Fancy spending £200 + on the train from Scotland for a Ruby Murrey and a few pints of Olde London Ratz P!ss. Be great to see you...

Andy,
I'm definitely up for it, but it has to be a weekday for me. It's bad enough travelling up to London Monday to Friday without having to do it on Saturdays as well!

I reckon a Friday would be ok..
Although I would prefer a weekend, I'm happy to be flexible if the majority can only make a weekday..

I come from the Essex end of the District Line, it's only an hour's travel but it's not just the time. I have to explain to the wife why I need to go out for a beer'n'curry with a bunch of people I've never met as it is , to do it on a Saturday which is one of our few quiet evenings together would be even worse.

The scenario.....
In a Bolton curry house 26 proggers arrive all at the same time.
Tony R, a natural leader, steps to the front and asks for "26 tables for 1 please"
...sounded better in my head...
Andy,
I live in Milton Keynes (southern bit of Scotland ), and if you guys to agree a date and i'm free i'd love to attend. I'll supply my own napkin.

I can usually get to London quite easily, but for the first two weeks of semester (16th - 3rd) I'm going to be rather swamped with coursework . I'm probably better fixed for Saturdays, but I can theoretically do any day, so long as I work like hell now (ha! ha!) so I can relax a bit by semester-time.

I'm good for both midweek and weekends. Remember that this needn't be
the only time we can meet up so if some cannot attend, there's always
another time. That said, if we can get as many people along as
possible, I think the evening would be better.
What about Friday the 20th then?

I'll investigate (i.e. ask the wife) the possibility of a spare bed for
those who might wish to travel from 'up North' should anyone deign to

Can't make the 20th, though - clubbing in Gloucester at the time... great idea though. Do we all turn up at a local pub carrying copies of 'Foxtrot' for recognition purposes..?

At the risk of confusing everything, we should bear in mind that pubs and curry houses in London will be considerably busier on a Friday night. The chances of deep discussions on the true meanings of Yes lyrics will be hampered by the noise from crowds of City brokers.

I'm sure there is a curry house that we could book a table in advance.
I'll investigate some of the the mainline stations for nearby venues.
In addition I may have a few prog mates along with me (maybe two or
three), so that might swell the numbers up two six or seven.
I would suggest either Waterloo (South London) or Paddington (North London) as the most likely places. What say you all?

Sorry, but I just can't stand Genesis. I never have been able to. It's
not snobbery, but simple differing tastes. I don't like the way some
people assume that certain groups just MUST be loved, regardless of
preference, if one is to be a true prog fan. I've had my right to even
be involved as a collaborator questioned a few times just because I
dislike that band! As it happens, I think the concept, however lightly
it was suggested, is a great one - we should all bring a copy of a
favourite prog album with us as identification (vinyl pref.).
|

It's ok not to like them, just don't be too harsh about it I wasn't questioning your collab status for not liking it, but Genesis are not greenday, so why all the hate?

Not hate but... they do make me cringe, somewhat. I really wouldn't
like to pose as a Genesis fan. Maybe the "seen dead" comment was a bit
much, but it's such an overused figure of speech that it's all but
harmless and more than a little meaningless.

I think it would be a good idea to meet in a pub first, at an agreed time. Get everyone in one place, and booking a table in advance may be essential on a Friday.
Definitive list seems to be:
sigod Blacksword Syzygy Trouserpress Goose Chopper Phil richardh?? (I know he was keen, but haven't heard from him regarding this date)
Missed anyone??

This could be worth cancelling other engagements to attend - with Trouserpress & The Miracle already on the verge of kicking off over Genesis, just imagine the carnage after a few pints & a good Chilli Chicken Dhansak...

Of course, there is the small matter of the airfare from Britain, but I'm sure Max will be good for it -- we've never otherwise asked for pay, right? |
Come on, Peter, way too expensive for all of us to travel over there (especially as we'd have to tolerate -20 degree temperatures...); how's about you swop arctic Canada for the more temperate climes of Stevenage & we shall travel together to West London, there to partake of beer and curry...

I would suggest either Waterloo (South London) or Paddington (North London) as the most likely places. What say you all?

Here's a list of Indian restaurants within easy striking distance of Paddington. I haven't been there for some time, but I seem to remember De Mughal on Praed Street being pretty good.

Mine too, but it's no hassle getting on the tube to Paddington IF thats where most people are heading. Think it takes about 15 minutes on the Bakerloo line.
Syzygy's link to the Paddington curry houses looks good. A friend of mine has had good things to say about a few of them, but I cant remember which ones.

Paddington gets my vote as that'll save me flapping about on the tube (I'm hopeless at it, no matter how many simple diagrams and lists of instructions I have to hand).
Have we finalised what day we're doing this yet? The friday/saturday debate's got me all confused, like.

Is this a Brits only thing or are continentals welcome?
If it is not far away from the Thalys terminal (I think Victoria station) , I could imagine a WE roundtrip from Brussels to London with the girlfriend, I send her shopping (she goes nuts about shopping in London - too bad she is broke ) .while we rape, pillage and conquer the Tikka Massalla (my fave) joints we can find>
I'd love to discuss prog, with the lots of yous!!!

I'll vote (selfishly) for Waterloo as it's nearer. Even better, I know a good curry house in Lower Thames Street with a Youngs pub next door. If not, Paddington is fine.
I'll be wearing my Beatles baseball cap. We need someone to make up some little name badges so we know who everyone is.

Sounds like a good idea, Hugues. As an alternative to Indian, I know a very good place in Pimlico (near to Victoria station) that does traditional English food, washed down with English cider, perry and wine - just to prove that not all UK cuisine is inedible muck!

I'll check with the missus (she would rip my heart out if I was to head out to London without her0 and check if the wallet can afford it. I was planning for the long WE anyway.
My Rover broke down in Normandy before X-mas (i abandoned it right there second time the head gasket blew) and if I get a car on loan, there are expenses for a new one ( I am sick of used cars but the effort for a new one is still a bit sharp) plus other ones (new gas installation in my Ardennes hide out, because I am about to rent it etc...), but WTF!! Thinking about this, it may be an idea for some of us to exchange mobile numbers by pm - I've met Blacksword, Sigod and Sean Trane and I can vouch for them not being psycho cyber stalkers, although I don't know if they'd say the same about me. That way, if anybody gets lost or delayed we'll be able to send out a search party if need be.

Chris:
Can you suggest a pub very near to Paddington station where we can all meet up?
Then we should all agree on a time. I realise that some people may want to go home first after work, I'll be finishing early that Friday anyway, so I'll go with whatever time is agreed among the majority.

Thankfully, no (despite any indications I may have inadvertantly given to the contrary), the consumption of alcohol is strictly forbidden in Canada. Nature's pure spring water is my champagne.
Still, judging from recent studies and statistics coming out of ol' Blighty, those "permanently-pissed" Brits could well do with an extended "drying out."

Oh, and a "suggested date" for dance-master Jimmy G:

Can't have him coming to the table feeling all tense, frustrated and unloved, now can we?
Mind you don't burn yourself, now James -- you may want to finish yer fag before "taking matters in hand," as it were....

Ok I saw a few picks of yours (and I posted mine in the Rogues gallery - all you have to do is add a moustache and goatee) and I know good ol Syz/Chris<
But this would be good idea to get pissed before we rip-up a Tandoori restaurant so we get really obnoxious and get spat-in food served to us. I always enjoy that little extra flavour
Where is Paddington from Victoria station?
