I think originally as a term it was genuinely quite valid; groups like Mogwai and GYBE! (and in my opinion Sonic Youth fit very comfortably too!) do certainly seem to have formed a reaction against the rock music of the day. The problem is that, in today's musical climate, there are a fair number of bands that have come to similar musical conclusions by developing rock music rather than rebelling against it. How then, can you make a seperation between two sets of groups which have so many similarities in sounds, just because they arrived at them in different ways?
NB: this post sounds rather more cut & dried than it was meant to. I'm not going to rewrite it though because I'm too tired.
