track 2 - the soft song
track 3 - ehm . . .
track 4 - the improv. song

PENDRAGON - Window of Life and Masquerade Overture(which has better melodies and I like it more);even the number of songs!!!
ARENA - Songs from the Lion Cage and Pride (equal!!!Both have closing epics and instrumental link-tracks)
ARENA - The Visitor and Contagion (both concept, with short tracks and absence of progressiveness )

Always thought The world/Window of life/Masquerade overture were just each part of a triple CD set..
Every AC/DC album...ooh, we're back there again...
when I think Tull I always thought 'under wraps' and Anderson's 'Walk into light' were the same album.
IQs last four studio albums have been fairly similar to me, certainly 'Ever' and 'The seventh house' are very samey.
I heard once that the debut 'spocks beard' album was supposed to be a double and that the remaining songs went on 'Beware of darkness', that would explain those two albums similarities.
Not sure any DT albums are the same, I know coz, I HATE TOT and love the albums on either side of it.
I think Yes, Genesis, Floyd, ELP and Rush have not repeated themselves, but agreed with the first two King crimson albums, they sound SO similar its weird.

The 2 albums that i first tought about the moment i saw this topic was:
Metallica's - Ride the lightning & Master of puppets, thos 2 albums rivals King Crimson's ITCOTCK & ITWOP and IMO they are even more similar in sound and song selection.

King Crimson - Discipline, Beat, Three of a Perfect Pair
I dont really like this era of KC, they all sound so similar. Most songs sound like fripp is doing speed exercises on his guitar while adrian gives out talking heads sounding vocals
oh and about Dream Theater, until Rudess joined, all the albums after their debut sound the same. I still like their early stuff, but their newer material has been getting better with each album since metropolis pt 2

Hmmm, this is interesting...
For me, there was little if any difference between Yes Fragile and their follow up Close to the Edge. But alot of bands do that when hit the 'big one'.....they stop trying and just repeat the same type of sound. The big bucks rule, then.
This is what did Deep Purple in. They were fine until that pinnacle of Machine Head.

I don't think "Counterparts" sounds anything like "Hold Your Fire". Besides, it's a much better album, one of Rush's best, while HYF is a bit too commercial for my tastes (even though it has its moments):

O.K., Train of thought, a very heavy technical album that is extremely dark, does not sound ANYTHING like something like falling into infinity, a more commercial light upbeep album. Even compare When Dream and Day unite to thier next album Images & Words. TOTALLY DIFFERENT. I havn't heard a single dream theater Album that sounds at all the same. Thier sound changes every album. When dream and day unite- heavy, fast metal influenced, more 80's sound, Images & words - lighter album with a mix of heavy songs with still a slight 80's feel, Awake- a dark themed heavy more evolved metal sound, Falling into infinity- light, more commercial, less guitar drive, Scenes from a Memory- mix of dark& light sounds, conceptual, the influences of the band become more evident, Six Degrees- light & dark, much more symphonic sound with a more technical approach. Train of Thought- pure metal album, dark complex, Octavarium- heavy with some light, poppy songs, proggy, slightly classic prog influenced.

I meant the latter - all their albums after Machine Head (except for some brief excitement with Coverdale), became a rehash of that slow, chugging 4-bar blues stuff.
You may be able to notice that, up until Machine Head, Jon Lord's playing was pretty colorful and more free form. Swirls and waves of sound. From Machine Head on, he became snagged in sparingly measured, dull sounding tones. Which are ok on certain songs, like on "Highway Star".
But when this is overused then it becomes old really quick. Unless you like monotony. I certainly don't.
But thanks for working to correct me. Next time I'll run my post by you, first. To make sure my opinion is correct.

For stuff that really sounds the same, try any of the fantasy power metal people talk about. It ALL sounds the same.

Heavy Horses and Songs from The Wood - Definitely!!
Trick Of The Tail and Wind and Wuthering
Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme
Signals and Moving Pictures
The Wall and Final Cut
Relayer and Tales From Topographic Oceans
Tubular Bells and Hergest Ridge
Hero and Heroine and Ghosts
The Snow Goose and Moonmadness
Cunning Stunts and Blind Dogs at St. Dunstans
The above is all by pure association, but then again they feel right IMHO

Heavy Horses and Songs from The Wood - Definitely!! I'm not so sure.
Trick Of The Tail and Wind and Wuthering - I think you're quite right on this one.
Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme - Ditto.
Signals and Moving Pictures - This is what a lot of people say, but I don't really agree. MP sounds much more distinctive and varied than Signals.
The Wall and Final Cut - Lyrically they may be rather similar, but "The Wall" is far better musically.
Relayer and Tales From Topographic Oceans - No way. Relayer is far harder. |

I slightly disagree with ITCOTCK and ITWOP. Sure, "Picture" and the title track sound exactly the same as "21st Century" and "Epitaph" (though I prefer the two former ones), and "Cadence" and "I Talk to the Wind" are close enough, but none of the other ones sound at all like anything on ITCOTCK, including the "Peace" ones. Maybe if the track order was different people wouldn't complain so much.
And I'd say there's really no musical change from "The Yes Album" up until "Tales"
(time to run away)

I read most of the posts on this thread and I'm suprised I haven't seen Yes
Big Generator and 90125 compared. They sound pretty similar with the
production and style. It's almost like Big Generator is an extension of 90125.
However, I do love both albums a lot!
...and all Tool sounds the same.

Not exact, but Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows sound very similar.

I disagree with those two, but rush can sound similar: A Caress of Steel and 2112 is closer than those two as well as Counterparts and Hold Your Fire

I agree with GUP and PW; Caress and 2112 but I disagree with Counterparts and HYF...
