I don`t care for Tool heres why

1. They are very two dimensional , and very predictable

2. all their songs sound alike

3. People who like Tool always tend to be people unsure about what they like

4. Their singer resorts to fits of screaming when his voice is needed to rise to the aggression

5. Their Drummer is no Peart or Bruford (lets face reality)

6. Their CD covers are bland

7. They compress their recordings so much that clipping begins at 96 db (well below satisfactory)

8. You can buy their CD`s at Kmart (always a warning sign)

9. Tool are nerds trying to be tough guys and they fail miserably

10.  apart from that they are OK

11. I`m going to get creamed for saying this stuff  ..  cya

Clearly you don't understand their lyrics.

6. Their CD covers are bland

Um, are you blind?

7. They compress their recordings so much that clipping begins at 96 db (well below satisfactory)

EVERYone does this now. Yes, it sucks, and it sounds like garbage, but it's not their choice, it's the label's.

11. I`m going to get creamed for saying this stuff  ..  cya

Great 8th post.

I agree with everything Mike says hear (not being a really big Tool fan, but
I do like them now.) And Carey is a GREAT drummer, or at least thats
what I hear from all my drumming friends. He may not be as good as
Peart of Bruford but I guarantee he's better than 90% of other prog band's
drummers.

What sort of "clipping" do you mean? Can't be digital clipping, and other than that - if they want it to sound that way, it's fine by me.

Or do you mean normal compression (reducing dynamics)? Again, this is fine by me - the difference is not really noticeable. Come on, we're talking about 2.1dB less than the theoretical maximum.

^^ Yeah, Carey's quite amazing.. Really complex odd time and rhythm changes. Mike Portnoy lists him as one of his favorites.

Knowing how popular Tool are if I was Mike Portnoy I would be listing Carey as well (just through invested interest) You need to understand something .. Portnoy is a far better drummer

I assumed he was talking about the practice of brickwall peak limiting during the mastering phase. Rush's Vapor Trails is a painful example of this practice.

Reason #12 (which of course assumes that the previous 11 were all valid): The disturbing videos.  If I could enjoy watching what I guess is supposed to be rusty fecal matter passing through old pipes / intestines, then I guess it's not so bad.

#13: Disturbing lyrics.  Lots of people like disturbing lyrics.  I only do in very small quantities.  TOTALLY a matter of opinion.

I don't care for Tool haters, here's why:

1. They are very predictable;

2. All their posts read alike;

3. People who dislike Tool tend to be people unsure whether they get enough attention, so:

4. They resort to starting inflammatory threads when they feel they lack that attention;

5. Their grammar and/or spelling is no Joyce or Fitzgerald (let's face reality);

6. Their arguments are bland;

7. They think production can make or break an album;

8. They visit the music section at Kmart (always a warning sign);

9. They are nerds trying to be tough guys and they fail miserably;

10. Apart from that they are OK;

11. They always get creamed in the end.

I don`t care for Tool heres why

1. They are very two dimensional , and very predictable. eh, well whatever you feel like

2. all their songs sound alike. they have 3 full albums that sound completely different, the styles are surprisingly drastically different. However, their first ep sounded like their first full album and this new album looks like it's gonna be like lateralus, but either way, their songs do very in sound a lot.

3. People who like Tool always tend to be people unsure about what they like. Completely and utterly irrelavent, this is somewhere between "ad hominem" and "ad populum" either way it totally ruins your argument, so you might as well never have typed this.

4. Their singer resorts to fits of screaming when his voice is needed to rise to the aggression. whatever you say....

5. Their Drummer is no Peart or Bruford (lets face reality). So? Good music isn't about having the most talented people in the world play it. Its about the craft of songwriting, its about the spirit of playing the music, about the enjoyment and appreciation of listening. However, their drummer is still a wicked sick drummer.

6. Their CD covers are bland. f**king bullsh*t. Their covers are wicked cool.

7. They compress their recordings so much that clipping begins at 96 db (well below satisfactory). whatever, sounds great to me.

8. You can buy their CD`s at Kmart (always a warning sign). Again, completely and utterly beyond relavency. Don't type sh*t like this it ruins your argument!

9. Tool are nerds trying to be tough guys and they fail miserably. yer stooped

10.  apart from that they are OK. OK computer

11. I`m going to get creamed for saying this stuff  ..  cya  . GG, GG, cya!

Why are we arguing about completely subjective opinions. I know this thread was uncalled for but there's no need to treat it as a personal challenge, something to be refuted at all costs. I fail to see how you can credibly refute a statement like "Their CD covers are bland", and the cliched response "you just haven't heard the music" doesn't cut it. I've heard the music and I find myself agreeing with some of the points he's raised, though he's still a troll and you guys really shouldn't be feeding him this manner.

Fair enough - but only the first two arguments and maybe the seventh one make sense (not much, IMO, but all right...) The rest? Give me a break.

And yeah, he got all the attention he was looking for and then some.

Even though I don't care for TOOL I still don't agree with the foreman of this forum... but I do see a lot of people lying when they are trying to convince themselves of Dan Carey's skills at drumming.  The drums hardly exist, people.  What the f**k are you talking about.

It's not like this is a bad thing or that I care either way but... I don't think you should bust the man for that point.  It's true and maybe he likes his drums a lot.

Fancy drumming doesn't necessarily mean good or better drumming.

1. They are very two dimensional , and very predictable  yeah, hooray for three dimensional music...what a dumb arguement, that doesn't even mean anything, that's just like political spin, it sounds like something but it doesnt mean anything

2. all their songs sound alike  to your ear...which by that statement, doesn't appear to be very good, especially with comment 5

3. People who like Tool always tend to be people unsure about what they like  Good arguement..  this just doesn't make any sense, why not talk about music you like rather than bash things for obviously no real reason

4. Their singer resorts to fits of screaming when his voice is needed to rise to the aggression   If the guy wants to scream, who's gonna say he shouldn't just because singers didn't scream on 70s albums, doesn't mean they can't now. Maynard studied opera as a child and if you actually listen to any of their music, his "fits of screaming" can be one solid diahram "scream" for over 30 seconds, you try it

5. Their Drummer is no Peart or Bruford (lets face reality)  actually the drummer is incredibly good, playing layered polyrhymes over the band, something Peart never does, he just isn't as flashy with long descending 2112 fills

6. Their CD covers are bland  what about close to the edge...ooooh a color fade, that album must suck...another dumb arguement

7. They compress their recordings so much that clipping begins at 96 db (well below satisfactory)   I've never noticed any problem with this

8. You can buy their CD`s at Kmart (always a warning sign)  good god no! Kmart, how could they, how could they want to get there music out to the people.  So you can't by rush, genesis, yes, or the like at Kmart...of wait, i think I bought the aforementioned 2112 at a kmart

9. Tool are nerds trying to be tough guys and they fail miserably  good arguement-ha once again...anything to back this with...do they play Dungeons and Dragons with real swords or something, or maybe watch star trek reruns while cutting themselves, what?

also, apparently there aren't many drummers here, or you just can't hear very well. The drumming with tool is actually very complex, especially on Lateralus.  Even fairly straight forward songs, like sober, have fairly complex drum parts, the beat doesn't sound good, but it actually takes a little practice to get down, because it takes a certain degree of independence that most drummers on't even worry about. and as I said before, flashy isn't the only indicator of quality.  In that sense steve hackett isn't a good guitarist because he doesn't do constant solos

Have you been reading the posts in this thread?

Almost everyone here has said Carey is an extremely talented drummer.

I am a drummer with over 30 years of experience and have been gushing about the man since the day I came onto this forum.

The worst thing of these threads is to see a guy with bad arguments saying bad things about a band he dislike and lots of collaborators and senior members, and admins, etc replying his post with bad arguments, because they are also based in their personal opinions and they put themselves at the same level of the topic creator. The only difference is that they are 20 against 1 and no one who has a little of sanity dares to support the topic creator to not be offended just for the fun of these members.

Seems like the ones who criticize these topics are the people who want to get attention and feel superior as the others just because they contribute more often with this site.

Only these arguments can be considered stupid:

3. People who like Tool always tend to be people unsure about what they like
8. You can buy their CD`s at Kmart (always a warning sign)
9. Tool are nerds trying to be tough guys and they fail miserably

The others  cannot be refuted. Just because you consider themselves more intelligent than the topic creator, you think that when you say that Tool music isn't predictable, their songs don't sound alike, their singer is brilliant when he screams, that their drummer is as good as Peart or Bruford (or even better), that their CD covers are superb and their recordings are of an excellent quality, you are right. It is true among yourselves, as it is true that Abba, Backstreet Boys, Guns 'n Roses are the best band ever in their fan-clubs, and it is true that Madonna, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and Eminem are excellent artists and musicians to their fans.

Once I went to a second-hand record store with a friend of mine that said he liked records (vinyl) too (vinyl is out of print in Brazil since 1995).  That day I bought an Emerson, Lake and Palmer and a Genesis record (I think Works I and Foxtrot). He bought a Beatles and a Guns 'n Roses record. And that day he said he thought that Axl Rose was the best piano players of the world (talking about November Rain video clip). Did I say something like you said in this topic? Of course not. Let him believe that Axl Rose is the best pianist of the world. It was not because I was with an ELP record in my hands that I had authority to say he is wrong and he doesn't know anything about playing piano, talent and so on.

This kind of atitude is expected for these people who discovered this website two weeks ago, but it is not acceptable for the senior members, collaborators, reviewers, prog-metal specialists, etc.

Seems that there are some people who need to learn a lot.

Then at least Lateralus may be your favorite prog metal album - that's something, isn't it? Actually if I remember correctly, it is currently the #5 prog metal album in the progarchives statistics.

The only difference is that they are 20 against 1 and no one who has a little of sanity dares to support the topic creator to not be offended just for the fun of these members.

In other words, don't feed the trolls.
Many topics I've seen of late can be considered as little more than flamebait.
I realize it's hard to let your favorite artists get bashed and remain silent, but in my mind, it's better to let such obvious troll threads simply die of neglect.

also, apparently there aren't many drummers here, or you just can't hear very well.

I am a drummer with over 30 years of experience and have been gushing about the man since the day I came onto this forum.

of course I haven't, i read the topic then comment on it, i don't have time for the rest, but in this case I saw someone else who agreed with the statement ther danny carey isn't that good, which is ridiculous of course

This might shed some light on the subject:

Portnoy won the poll ... but Carey got many votes.

And a slightly awkward-sounding one. No offence, Peter, but just say you don't like them. It's respectful and doesn't sound forced, IMO.

SmileI know -- my point is that these things are purely subjective, and this thread is clearly designed to offend Tool fans.

I don't like Tool because I don't like their music.

Is that better? Wink

I shall be seeing Tool in a few months time live, but at a festival with other bands, so it maybe be from a distance away.  But I shall most likely enjoy it.

Tool are going to be a feature of upcoming debate because of the new album release.

I see no merit in this discussion and seeing as it has gone to 4 pages,I am closing it.

If this seems arbitary then so be it.
