I think second parts arenīt as good as the first ones... a clear example is Tubullar bells II, maybe is not that bad... but nothing compared with the first...

When a band just decide to make a part 2 years after the original, it just smells of cashing in. I dont like them 'cause they never feel like a proper idea.

I couldnt agree more, like after 6 bad albums in desperation a band calls it next album something fans recognise and splash a II at the end.Voila, sellout!

They're usually not as bad as movies containing either "X" (as in 10) or "Return Of"/"Son Of"...I also generally don't care for "reunion" tours or "oldies" concerts...It's probably just me...

After Empire was Promised Land, one of their best IMO
OK we can make it three not soooo good onesLOL
Actually two because Tribe had some good songs and was a sort of turning point in a way.

The nly part II album that I can remember now that sounds good is Helloween's Keeper II. But this isn't a real part two, because the whole story as conceived as a double album.
Can't say nothing about prog albums.

I think that they laid a foundation of sorts for progressive metal........weird that they get credit for that but Iron Maiden don't(IM was doing it before them, and better). When QR's first EP came out me and all my friends recognized it for the IM rip-off that it was,and The Warning was no better.

Empire,OMC and Promised Land are great albums...but can you honestly say those albums are progressive metal????

Well, SFAM was only a follow up to a song rather than an album, so I'm not sure that that counts.

As for Queensryche, I agree with Jody, when I got greatist hits I was supprised how much Queen Of The Reich and The Lady Wore Black were like Iron Maiden.

Rage For Order is a good album that people seem to miss but they definatly peaked at Mindcrime.

Ayreons The Universal Migrator Pts 1&2 are both good but they came out at the same time.

Seems like all the Admin and Special Collabarators have all sent PMīs to each other to say "We will teach this naive young Senior a thing or two!"

Queensryche were definitely influenced a lot by Maiden and Priest(who probably influenced Maiden) Priest were more than likely influenced by Sabbath, just natural progression. Queensrycheīs EP was metal, I agree with that. The Warning had the beginnings of what would evolve into Prog Metal. The song" Road to Madness" with the lyrics "I must explore the boundaries" or something very similar were used in "A change of seasons" by DT. The thought provoking lyrics were a first for a metal band.
A concept album by a heavy metal band was unheard of at the time (Maybe Savatage was first with that one, Iīm not sure) Sister Mary Suite would be the most Prog song on the album.
When Silent Lucidity came out, one of the guys in DT said "We wanted to write a song about dream control but Queensryche beat us to it"
With each release they were becoming more progressive, reaching their peak with Promised Land.
There were about three or four progressive songs on each album, but if you analyse each song by lots of bands there are sure to be many which arenīt what would be considered true prog (that includes bands like Kansas and Yes)
If you watch the DVDīs of Operation Livecrime and Scenes from a memory back to back, you will see how much Dream Theater took from Queensryche, even up to the big flashback scenes at the end of both DVDīs. Sure the musicianship in a lot of newer prog metal is far superior to Queensryche and I canīt argue about that fact, but most of those guys were at one time in their youth influenced by Queensryche.

So this IMHO is what makes Queensryche the pioneers of Prog Metal.

OK Admin, Special Callaborators and the hordes of angry DT fans..
Come at me...do your worst..Iīm waiting!!LOL

Jean-Michel Jarre's follow-up to his electronica masterpiece "Oxygene", named "Oxygene 7-13" is nearly as good as "Oxygene". A bit more modern in sound too.

However, I agree that some "Part 2" albums is weaker than "Part 1", not always though..

Queensryche EP: power metal
The Warning: melodic/progressive metal
Rage For Order: progressive rock/melodic metal
O:MC: power/progressive metal
Empire: prog related melodic/pop metal
Promised Land: art/progressive rock
HITNF: grunge/alternative rock
Q2K: alternative rock
Tribe: prog related alternative rock
O:MC: power/progressive metal

Yes, their albums are progressive, with some (bad) exceptions.

Good to have them back with some strength on O:M II, this album is a excellent sequel, no matter what others said, who haven't listened to it enough. It's a growing album, which is mostly different to the first part. Don't expect such a album like the first part, you will be disappointed instantly!

Return to The Centre of The Earth is the second part of Journey To The Centre Of The Earth by Rick Wakeman and it has very good moments (specially the collaborations of Trevor Rabin and Justin Hayward) and sounds much better, although I still prefer the original.

If an album is set up to have a sequel, i.e being part 1 of something is understandable as it was anticipated and planned but to just slap a II on the end of an existing concept album whos story was finished by the end of the first album... I'm thinking its more for money then the music.
Operation:Mind-Crime was an awesome album, number 2 was good but it was lacking something that the first one had.
QR's got my vote for being prog

I've never liked Def Leppard much, but as far as I can remember they started out as part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal in the early '80s - then they became more American-sounding, with big choruses, etc. I think the comparison with Van Halen and Aerosmith is a good one (though Aerosmith are by far the better musicians), though Queensryche have never sounded like that. Their first EP was definitely inspired by Priest (especially as regards the vocal style), then they became gradually more progressive. However, as I have often said here, I don't think they were much more progressive then Iron Maiden, who are not included in PA.

Back to Part II... I was planning to get OM:2, but I've read so many contrasting things so far. I also think that sequels are hardly ever as good as the original - but one can never tell.

I kinda liked Mindcrime 2, the lyrics weren't as good, but there's some good songs to be had, my favorites being "Hostage", "Re-Arrange you", and "Junkie's Blues". I also prefer the guitar work on this one to the original OMC.

Empire's a toe tapper, open the car windows & step on the gas...

The real offenders are bands who record "Part II's" of initial hit records years later, then come out with live versions of those Part II's after their careers really tank. You know who you are...

Er, I don't know what "harshing my buzz" means, but Led Zeppelin II is not the second part of Led Zeppelin I in the way that Tubular Bells II is to Tubular Bells. And so Led Zeppelin IV is not the fourth part of Led Zeppelin I. It's not even called Led Zeppelin IV officially. It has no title.

In the 70īs Kansas had a lot of fully prog songs.
Iīm just saying that in the 80īs there were a lot of songs by big prog bands that were more pop or rock.

Led Zeppelin II is not the second part of Led Zeppelin I. It's just their second album. Great album though.

What??? By extension, are you saying that Zeppelin IV (that's "4", not "IV" as in the drip to keep you alive - no irony intended) is not the fourth part of Zep I? Dude, you're harshing my buzz!

Funny you should mention Tubular Bells, that one cost me part of my hearing via "good" headphones, so I'd recommend against Silent Lucidity on aforementioned headphones...LZ IV has plenty of names: IV, Zoso (JImmy Page's symbol, actually Zofo), "the fourth album" (per Plant), "the unnamed album", runes, "four symbols"...Don't know what "harshing my buzz" means? A Google search is in order pronto (that means fast)...A phrase not used much across the pond I suppose...
