Subject: 10 Ultimate prog SONGS
Date Posted: May 30 2006 at 05:19
Since this forum features a "10/25/100 ultimate prog albums" thread about every week, I thought to make something different: a 10 ultimate prog SONGS topic. I'm fairly new to the genre, so my list may not be all that interesting, but what do you think, are the 10 best prog songs ever made? My list:

1. Yes - Close to the Edge
2. Pink Floyd - Echoes
3. Yes - Awaken
4. Pink Floyd - Shine on you crazy diamond (if counted as one song)
5. Porcupine Tree - The Sky Moves Sideways - (if counted as one song)
6. Camel - Lady Fantasy
7. Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons
8. Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick (if counted as one song)
9. Genesis - The Musical Box
10. Genesis - Supper's Ready

Not bad disastercasper, I would only change The Sky Moves Sideways for Rush's 2112 or La Villa Strangiato.

Never been much of a Rush fan Wink Porcupine Tree may be the only non-cliché choice on my list, but I just love the song and that's what it's all about, isn't it?

I understand that it's hard to make a list with just 10 songs and that this list changes all the time, but the least you can do is try.

I'd choose "Sea Song", my favourite...with the great RS on bass...Wink

BTW, it's way too tough to think about 10 ultimate prog tracks. There are far too many I love, and I agree with many of Rocktopus's choices. Maybe later I'll find my inspiration...

Oooo, really hard to choose. I suppose a top ten prog songs changes almost daily for most of the readers here. Anyways, here's some classics (in my mind Tongue) mixed with some more recent stuff i've been into:

1.) Porcupine Tree - The Sky Moves Sideways (full 34-minute version)
2.) The Flower Kings - The Truth Will Set You Free
3.) Tool - 10,000 Days
4.) Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons
5.) Yes - Close to the Edge (obviously)
6.) King Crimson - Starless
7.) The Mars Volta - Cassandra Geminii
8.) Symphony X - The Odyssey
9.) Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick Part I
10.) Coheed and Cambria - The Willing Well II

As you can see, the list is OF COURSE dominated by epics, as they seem to be able to clearly define every aspect of the band playing it. This thread asks for a seemingly impossible answer...I had to leave off Pink Floyd, Pain of Salvation, Spock's Beard, Genesis, Opeth, The Tangent, Sigur Ros, etc etc....

Besides, most prog bands write ALBUMS, not SONGS Big smile

I don't really have ten all-time favourites, and my favourites du jour change, well, pretty much daily as I'm exposed to new-to-me music.... I know far too little prog to come up with a really ultimate list.  Currently I'm totally hung-up on Le Orme... Still, I'll try, and this is kind of arbitrary and in no particular order..

Le Orme - Maggio
Focus - Hamburger Concerto
Camel - La Princesse Perdue
Anglagard - Jordrok
Gentle Giant - Experience
Gryphon - Midnight Mushrumps
Caravan - Nine Feet Underground
ELP - Trilogy
Yes - Heart of the Sunrise

As somebody else has said on this topic, I would go for "unconventional" songs

1) Arbeit Macht Frei - Area
2) Smoke and Mirrors - Symphony X
3) Medio Oriente 249000 tutto comrpeso - Il Volo
4) Luglio, Agosto Settembre Nero - Area
5) Bangkok - Steve Vai
6) Wish you where here - Vanden Plas
7) Pleasent Shade of Grey part V - Fates Warning
8)  What Need Have I For This - Shakti With John McLaughlin
9) Metropolis part I - Dream Theater (sorry about that! Cry)
10) Passage To Paralysis - Explorers Club

I'm not generally very keen on "super groups" but I think in this forum too little is said about Explorers Club.

6. Yes - Starship Trooper (one of the first prog tunes I got into)
7. Jethro Tull - Baker Street Muse (wierd I know but I love that song)
8. DT - Under a Glass Moon (its a drum thing)
9. Rush - A Farewell to Kings (see Xanadu)
10. Riverside - Second Life Syndrome (it still has that new car smell, awesome tune).
