All of us on here through one way or another got here because We love prog. But it wasn't always like that. We had to start somewhere.I was wondering what our very first record buy was?For me it was Neil Diamond's 'Crackling Rosie' way back in 69' followed by Elton John's 'Your Song'.At the time, I thought Diamond was a raw brilliant talent How the times change!!!!Be honest no matter how lame is seems now.I confess to.................................

First ever album was By Elvis Presley, don't know it's title (All shook up, was one of the songs on it) when I was eight. One of the things I'm sorry to have lost.

Next was probably Elton John, a compilation with early works (on tape).

Good to see you bareing your soul with Neil Diamond, Fragile. In view of the crooner he became, it easy to forget that in the early 70's he did have a fair degree of credibility. His "Gold" and "Taproot manuscript" albums were early purchases of mine, and I still enjoy them today.

First single for me was "Blackberry way" by the Move (ELO predecessor). It had a great B side called "Something" (not the Beatles song), which indicated the ELO direction they were to take.

First LP was "Willy and the poor boys" by Creedence Clearwater Revival, which I still find a good listen today.

Umm - first single was probably Gary Glitter - I'm The Leader Of The Gang

First album was Journey to the Centre of the Earth - saved my pocket money for weeks to get that.

Despite everything, I still have a soft spot for Gary Glitter's early hits.

Can't say the same for Journey to the Centre of the Earth though. Listened to it a couple of years ago and cringed.

The next 4 were Tubular Bells, Ommadawn, Dark Side of the Moon and Selling England by the Pound, and I still love all of them.

The first album I can remember buying was "Sheer Heart Attack" by Queen. I was 10 years old and I had never heard anything like this,it just blew my tiny mind. After playing the very first track,"Brighton Rock" I knew I wanted to be a guitarist. And not long after that, I got my first guitar and discovered to my complete shock that learning how to play like Brian May was actually very difficult so my guitar career lasted approximately 6 months.

Until I picked it up again when I was 17 when I joined a punk band but that's a very embarassing part of my youth I would much rather forget.

Gold was his live LP from the late 60's with great tracks like; Kentucky Woman, Solitary Man, Holly holy, Cherry Cherry and a fabulous version of He Aint Heavy He's My Brother. Taproot Manuscript was a very original piece of music. Pity he chose an almost cabaret path to follow thereafter. Thanks for reminding me of these Easy Livin' , I still have Gold and Tap on vinyl , must give them a re-listen.

my first cd purchase, meaning me with my own
money going to the store and picking something up,
would be goldfinger's cover ep called "Darinn's
coconut ass". i still listen to it, even today. some of
their covers are really well done. they cover some
ska stuff (peter tosh, some other old people) along
with some other stuff (the cure, the who) it's a pretty
good ep.

Fragile,

The only brothers I can suggest would be the Davies bros, of the Kinks. I would assume Ray played on Dave's solo hit "Death of a clown" somewhere, and the Kinks had several number ones with both brothers on them ("Waterloo sunset", "Lola", etc.).

Other possiblities, Paul and Barry Ryan, Mark & David Knopfler, Peter and Robin StarstedtConfused

SV, you're dad just says he knows, get him to write it down and see if it matches with Fragile's answer.Wink

My first albums, if I remember all those many years ago, were:

Electric Light Orchestra - Electric Light Orchestra (the album with Roll
Over Beethoven)

Ian Hunter - Ian Hunter (the album with Once Bitten Twice Shy)

Sparks - Kimono My House

Yes - Fragile

And with the exception of the ELO album (which I quickly grew tired of), I
still like them all.

I thought this was a good thread...brought back those memories of discovering Heep and how excited I was...och those were tremendous summer days.. you can tell by peoples first tastes possibly their ages as some started of with rock and prog  the older people started with pop from the 60's  some of them will be nearly sixty themselves...Viva la prog!

You know I honestly can't remember my very first record purchase (I'm still a relatively young man of 18 years! )

I remember having a cassette of "A Hard Day's Night" when about 8 or 9. My first ever Prog album was probably Jeff Wayne's "War of the Worlds", which I received for Christmas one time when I was about 13. I can remember though, when music became a really big thing for me, and that started with The Moody Blues' "Days of Future Passed". Ahh I bought all of the Core 7 albums. I am now totally unstoppable when it comes to buying records!! ARRGH!

SmileWithin months of each other: The Archies - Sugar Sugar (45); Creedence Clearwater Revival - Travelin' Band (45), Simon & Garfunkel - The Sounds of Silence (LP -- "I Am a Rock" still resonates!); Lighthouse - One Fine Morning (LP).

Then came Cooper, Purple, Zep, Rainbow, etc.

First pseudo-prog purchase: Uriah Heep - the Magician's Birthday.

First unequivocal prog purchase: I think it was Genesis - The Lamb.

(Before that, my 3-years-older sister & her collection introduced me to the wonders of Yes, Tull, Genesis, ELP, etc.)

Many moons ago....

I was 10 when the Beatles broke up, and I cried when I heard the sad news....Smile
