If you've ever been to http://www.epitonic.com - www.epitonic.com (a great site, one of my favourites-that's because they have FREE LEGAL MP3S!), you'll notice that you'll find quite a few bands filed under Math Rock . Basically,you'll discvover that there is a lot of experimental work, and, most importantly, some actualy sound like RIO or Prog Metal. IMO, you sahould check irt out. And don't listen to their walk-through- it'll get you into believing the bands are punky new wave numbers. -------------

Math Rock, yet another sub-genre then but I must admit it sounds more amusing than most. Does that mean that there is a sub genre for every school subject? Geography Rock - Asia or Kansas History Rock - Forever Autumn or Strata English Lit Rock - Saga Pagan Studies Rock - Solstice The list is endless I suspect.

I think most of the silly sounding genres are offshoots of
punk/indie/hardcore; math rock, post rock, shoegazer, slowcore,
sadcore, queercore, spazcore, cowpunk, etc...! Re math rock, I'll listen for a while but I'll often sort of drift off because a lot doesn't really go anywhere. Orthrelm are excellent though, if they come under math rock. |

Math rock is fundamentally pretentious, more so than any form of Prog, because bands basically pick a weird time sig for the sake of it and then build up a complex riff. Hey, Styx is great, or can be! Grand Illusion, Equinox, Serpent Is Rising...I've got no problem with those albums at all...but this is not the point (how did Styx even get mentioned in a mathrock thread)... Breadwinner is cool mathrock, very listenable...but there's a great instrumental trio out there that splits the difference between mathrock and progrock, they're basically progmetal but very technical, they're sorta all this stuff rolled up in a ball, no one else quite like them: Canvas Solaris. Check out their 'Spatial/Design' EP and 'Sublimation' album! Great stuff! Along with Artcane and Voivod, I'd like to see C.S. added to the archives at some point... ------------- ...it is real...it is Rael... |

The drummer from Canvas Solaris sent me a copy of the album, and it's
pretty mad. While I find with a lot of techy bands the slow parts
aren't very interesting (certainly compared to the fast bits),
Sublimation kept my interest throughout. On the subject of techy metal/math rock, is anybody into... Behold... the Arctopus Drysysthmia (I don't know how to spell it!) Spastic Ink (there must be some of you!) Dillinger Escape Plan or Orthrelm? |

Heck yeah, Behold...The Arctopus is very good, but I think they'll really be killer as times goes on, I think we're just hearing hints of what they can do. I'm a huge Spastic Ink fan to, the 'Ink Compatible' album is amazing, a truly unique album tech-metal or otherwise...I know some people complained about McMaster's vocals, but I thought it was cool. Most albums in a similar vein (Sieges Even, Watchtower, Psychotic Waltz) have high-range singers, McMaster brought things down-to-earth a bit. ------------- ...it is real...it is Rael... |

hi Goose-- McMaster does lead vocals on the majority of songs on the Spastic Ink album...it's Gildenlow who's only on one song (and he does a great job too.). I'm not looking at the CD booklet right now, but I think those are the only vocalists on the album... ------------- ...it is real...it is Rael... |
