Point is, I air guitar my way through LIFE. These are all my classics; a library I'm glad to say is still growing (so I'll have to revamp this some time). Of course, I'm too close to the subject to call it--I think they're all great. Even other!

I used to love playing air guitar on DANCING WITH THE MOONLIT NIGHT. O, what fun I had! I could be Steve Hackett (but standing up and running about) and Peter Gabriel at once! FIRTH OF FIFTH was even more fun! But nothing could beat the final side of the original 3-album edition of Yessongs: first YOURS IS NO DISGRACE (loooong guitar workout) and then STARSHIP TROUPER, the climax of climaxes!

i'd go for "yours is no disgrace", probably my favorite YES song.

but WHY isn't "heat of the moment" (ASIA) on the list?
air guitarin'
air drummin'
air singin' (so to speak...)
air keyboardin'
all in one tune and simultaneaously! obviously, everyone
thinks i am not well...

How can you have no quarter, but the list doesn't include stairway to heaven?  It's one of the few songs where the solo actually is vital to the song.  Picture that song without the solo.  It's a completely different song!  My vote goes for stairway. (i know it's cliche but eh)

So many. A couple of good air guitar numbers that come to mind immediately:

The Gold It's In The... and Childhood's End on the Floyd's Obscured By Clouds.

Zeppelin are always good for air guitar.  Stairway gets my vote too, but I went for No Quarter on this poll.

peter_gabriel,

You've done nothing requiring an apology.

The vocalist does not sing like a guitar. Playing 'air guitar' simply means that you pretend to play the electric guitar. Perhaps the photograph on the following Web pages will help you understand:

Er, haven't heard enough Rush yet...and by that, I mean haven't heard any. BUT I've got Moving Pictures lined up for a listen later on.

Also, I'm glad to see that two forms of Aqualung have recieved votes.

Wow. Moonlight's beating out even Other. Huh. And no one voted for poor Aqualung Live.

As for myself, were I to vote, might be No Quarter, might stronger still be 21st Century Man...but I'd have to say Minstrel.

Spanking the imaginary plank to any of the following is most satisfying!

Every Day - Steve Hackett

As I play bassguitar I rarely play airguitar anymore. I used to do it a lot when I was younger though (I even backed it up with sound, I was called "the human guitar" at kindergarten LOL). I don't remeber any particular favourite though.

21st Century Schizoid Man for, especially the huge guitar chord that leads back into the main melody.

What about pretending to play other instruments?  Air drumming is the obvious other instrument, but does anyone ever pretend to play piano?  I sometimes pretend to play keyboards on a desk or table in songs such as Hoedown by ELP and Rick Wakeman's solo in Siberian Khatru.

I always enjoyed Ritual from Yes's TALES album for this purpose.  You can switch from instrument to instrument because there's SO MUCH going on.  At the psychedelic part with the chinking wineglasses, I always pretend to hit them.

But my vote was for 21st Cen...Come on people.

Yours Is No Disgrace.

The first guitar solo from Steve Howe on a Yes album, The Yes album Smile . That one blew my mind and it is still one of my favourite air guitar moments.

I think that there are many, many songs to which the solo is vital. Especcially in prog rock. I mean, prog rock without solos? The solos are vital, all right.

In this poll I chose the "other rocker" alternative. For me the best prog air guitaring songs are (in random order):

Genesis: The Knife (phantastic solo by Anthony Phillips).
Camel: Ice (Andrew Latimer's best).
Camel: Summer Lightening (Andrew Latimer's second best solo).
King Crimson: Starless (Total monotony, but superbly executed).
Rush: 2112 (Some phantastic solos).
Rush: Jacob's Ladder (The solo in the beginning is just haunting).
Rush: Natural Science (Beautiful, and technically advanced).
Yes: Machine Messias (Beautiful guitar work from Howe).
Yes: Siberian Khatru (Phantastic interplay between Howe and Wakeman).
ELP: Tarkus (The bluesy guitar parts in the last chapters are phantastic).
Pink Floyd: Echoes (David Gilmour rocks).
Pink Floyd: Comfortably Numb (OK, it's perhaps a bit overrated, but still very good).

I also like Aqualung's solos. In a way, the keyboard/guitar-interplay in Camel's Slow Yourself Down kind of reminds me a bit about the one in Aqualung.

And if one includes Iron Maiden here, I would certainly also mention the song The Phantom Of The Opera, for some amazing and beautiful guitar solos.

And perhaps Second Home By The Sea (Genesis) should also be included. The guitar parts in the end of that song are beautiful.

Out of these choices I'd go with Aqualung, but really - Locomotive Breath is better.

Anything by Maiden (I switch between guitar, bass and drums all through the songs).
Oh yea, "The Knife" (Ant Phillips rocks!!!!)

Damn you el bóthy, I was going to say that!

Favorite air guitar? In Prog? Probably Hackett's solo on Firth Of Fifth from 'Seconds Out', but yes, Whistler, I have been known to go for it on the live version of 'Aqualung' too...

Having said that - air Hammond is much kinder to these old legs... you get to sit down.
