I think when Brufford left White replaced him with no problem... when Wakeman left, Moraz for me even surpassed him in Relayer... when Moraz was outed, Wakeman had no problems, off course... when Anderson left it was a disaster but lasted only for one album (and a decent album at that)....when Howe left.... CHAOS....90125....
When GAbriel left, Genesis still released masterpieces....when HAckett left, DISASTER....when Collins left the damage was already done, genesis were already crap so it wasn't a big deal....
So I think Hackett's departure, followed by Howe's

Definitely Hackett. Genesis started to slip after he left then completely abandoned prog with Abacab just a few years later.

Genesis started going downhill down to where they are NOW... playing some stinky pop tunes for some bucks

I'd have to honestly say, from the choices given above, my vote would be Gabriel.
Whoa, you say...what about TOTT and WAW, two great albums? The slip really began with ATTWT...
Yeah, I see your point...but for me, Gabriels presence was what really put Genesis over the top as one of the mainstays of prog rock. His stage persona really defined Genesis (and prog in general by extrapolation). He brought the sense of the mysterious, the unknown, the weird, the beautiful to the band. Without him, for me at least, his absence really reduced Genesis to yet another fine prog band status.
If you doubt my point of view, consider how many prog bands through the years count Gabriel's Genesis as a main influence, vs. those that find their main influence as Wind and Wuthering...

I'm gonna have to sat STEVE HOWE. I guess to me, his tone and style are a big part of what makes it sound like Yes to me. Probably because I was first introduced to Yes with Fragile.

Well, just a personal opinion but it has to be JON ANDERSON. Yes without Jon's vocals is worse than 80's releases

Gabriel and Hackett both hurt Genesis when they left. I think the first couple albums after Gabriel left were good, but lacking something. After Hackett left, however, disaster ensued.

Both bands managed to write some enjoyable albums in the absence of the mentioned musicians.
The only leaving that led to a complete disaster was the departure of Steve Hackett.

Absolutely no contest here - Steve Hackett leaving was a blow Genesis never recovered from.
These days, I would much rather go and see Hackett in concert than Genesis. (He is cheaper too!)

Gabriel, his leaving layed the foundation for what Genesis would become.

Ill go with Anderson, as if there is someone that reaaaaaaaaally does not need to be replaced, this is it! Everyone votes for Hackett...but the truth is when Hackett left Genesis changed completly, its not like they tried to cover up the lack of him, they changes their sound dramatically, so I dont see that as a replacement...

when gabriel left genesis, they lost their leader, their voice, their message.
sorry ... but every band has a message to send.

Nice poll. Tough choices, but I think it has to be Hackett.

Another vote for Hackett! Rutherford is a fine guitarist but didn't have the unique magic of the Hackett sound.
