hi my name is mike and i play for a melodic death metal band called mummification. i need some help getting a few of the members in my band to listen to some prog rock. so far i have got them to listen to the band "spastic ink" and "Solitary Speaking of Theoretical Confinement" if anyone can think of any other bands that are cool that you think these guys might dig on let me know. they see to love odd time changes and technical stuff (they realy like crazy drums)thanx

SPASTIC INK is the craziest jazz-fusion-metal band I ever heard. Certainly better than any Holdsworth's stuff. If you want metal bands with odd-time signatures, check out Dream Theater's "Awake" , Ice Age's "The great divide" (fantastic theatrical voices à la Saga's Michael Sadler), Altura's "Mercy", Pain of Salvation's "One hour by the concrete lake", Fates Warning's "Perfect symmetry", Ark's first album ("Ark"). Instrumental progressive metal bands are also recommended : Derek Sherinian's "Planet X" (with the fabulous drummer Virgil Donati), Liquid Tension Experiment (with Dream Theater's drummer Mike Portnoy).

In the italian progressive bands, there are lots of rhythm changes, check out for example Deus Ex Machina's "De Republica".

Shadow Gallery is really boring. Symphony X is to my mind a 'speed'-metal band, as are Angra and Stratovarius.

Odd time changes?  Try the first U.K. album, and any mid-period Gentle Giant.  And lucas is correct about Deus ex Machina.

I once loved Holdsworth's solo efforts, but now I must admit that his music is as boring to my mind as Zappa's one (no wonder as he played with the same drummers), because it is too much technical and there is no structure in most of the songs. Moreover I don't understand why he choose Paul Williams as a lead singer, there are so many better vocalists. Despite the fact that I can't bear anymore Holdsworth's solo efforts, I appreciate his collaborations with Tony Williams, UK and Bruford and agree with the fact that he is one of the best guitarists in the world. Now about Spastic Ink : they really get a kick out of their playing and the music, although really complex, is FUN (what we can't say of Holdsworth's one).

I guess it's all about "state of mind." Like sushi, an aquired taste. I don't find Allan's music boring, in fact, I find a lot of complexities beyond just technical ability. The music defintely calls for active participation from the listener, like a soundtrack for your thoughts. "Peril Premonition" from the Secrets album is an incredible journey. Still, Allan's an innovator in the same group as Hendrix, Christian, Van Halen, McLaughlin, Fender, Johnson and Very few others.

We're talking about catching the ear of guys into death metal.  If you were trying to drive a nail would you use a hammer or would you use a crystal rose?

That's why I didn't suggest "Thick As A Brick" or "Tales From The Topographical Ocean".  Ya know?

I once listened to death metal (Obituary, Cancer, Death), groups that I still consider as great in their category. That didn't prevent me from listening to bands as Marillion or Yes.
