Hi everybody!
Lately, I've desperately tried to make a friend of mine interested in progressive and psychedelic music.
Unfortunately, I haven't yet suceeded as he sticks to be a Rolling Stones fan.
But as his birthday is coming, I was thinking to make another attempt in achieving my goal.
That is to make a CD for him, consisting of Rolling Stones songs - performed by progressive and psychedelic bands!
As I'm not yet that competent in prog music, I would like you to help me find the masterpieces that I know exists.
It can be Stones songs from any decade and album, as well as covers by any prog/progressive, psychedelic rock, space rock, krautrock, post rock... band ever from any part of the world!
I've got started and found those to begin with:
Harvester - Everybody Needs Somebody to Love
Trad, Gras och Stenar - The Last Time
The Residents - Satisfaction
Rotary Connection - Like a Rolling Stone
Eric Burdon & the Animals - Paint It Black
I would really appreciate your help!

Not strictly prog, but: 1. Deep Purple played instrumental 9-minutes version of "Paint It Black" with lots of improvisations. Can be found on live albums "Scandinavian Nights" ( http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=9115 - http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=9115 ) and "Live and Rare (live in Sweden 1970)" ( http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=9142 - http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=9142 ). 2. Martin Barre (Jethro Tull guitarist). His solo album "The Meeting" '96 contains a track called "The Audition". This track is nothing but very good instrumental version of "Paint It Black".
BTW I think "The Meeting" is the best solo album by Mr. Martin Lancelot Barre.
3. Pink Floyd played "I'm A King Bee" in 1966, can be found on some bootlegs only. (If you need it, send me PM. Though sound quality is poor.) ------------- Who are you and who am I to say we know the reason why... (D. Gilmour) |

Devo also did a version of Satisfaction, which I think is on their first album.

Am I missing anything by not listening to the Rolling Stones? I've heard a few "hits" on the radio, and from what I've heard so far they have nothing to offer me. And I can't help but laugh every time I see the album cover for Their Satanic Majesties Request... were they only in it for the money?  |

They are a great band. I'm pretty damn sick of hearing "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and especially "Wild Horses", but they wrote a hell of a lot of great songs. Street Fighting Man, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Brown Sugar, Gimme Shelter, Let's Spend the Night Together... Paint It Black and Under My Thumb are probably my two favorites of the singles. Both of which are on Aftermath which is a spectacular album. Other good songs to check out are 100 Years Ago and Angie (both from the generally hated Goat's Head Soup album). Dear Doctor from Beggar's Banquet, Bitch from Sticky Fingers, Rocks Off and Sweet Black Angel from Exile on Main Street, Emotional Rescue from Emotional Resuce. Check them out. Also while the cover and album for Their Satanic Majesties Request is obviously Sgt Peppers inspired, and an answer to in a way. It is still a good album. |

Mentioned elsewhere, listening to BST 3 - a rather interesting arrangement of Sympathy For The Devil lurks there. Surprisingly good brass rock arrangement of Jumpin' Jack Flash on one Peter Frampton's earlier studio albums.
Surely Muddy Waters was the originator of King Bee? And of course Cliff Richard had a minor hit with When Blues Turns To Grey!
Finally there was two charity eps of well known bands (of c 1990 period) doing covers of Gimme Shelter - Tom Jones backed by New Model Army do, IMHO,an astonishingly good version. ------------- The best eclectic music on the Web,8-11pm BST/GMT THURS. The best STones cover I've heard is The Tea Party's version of Paint it Black...

The Who issued an emergency/rush recording of two Stones' tunes for a single (including The Last Time) when Jagger & Richards were locked up for the 'girl-in-a-rug/Mars Bar' police raid.
