I know of some great compositions that have obvious influence from Holst's massive work "The Planets" which is probably my fav symphonic piece of all time.
List any songs prog or not that remind you of this piece...

Zep's "Friends". Another example of Page's "ability" in using "good" music riffs.

Cashmere (spelled right?) is about as heavy a riff as any eh??? I have not heard Friends I don't think, not a huge Zep fan but appreciate them more as time goes on...

A couple tracks on Zappa's Absolutely Free were based on The Planets.
A lot of movie music seems based on it too.

Music from Conan The Barbarian comes to mind, very similar to Jupiter I think.

I'm surprised that KC's The Devil's Triangle hasn't been mentioned yet. As far as I know, it's a re-working of one of the themes from The Planets.

Wasn't Manfred Mann's Earth Band's Joybringer based on "Mars"? I think Rainbow's "Eyes of the world" uses the opening theme from that piece to.
Then of course there's the Kevin Peek/Rich Wakeman/Jeff Wayne "Planets" listed in the various artists section.
Surely Keith Emerson must have used something from "The planets" too?

^He did, yes. On the Emerson Lake and Powell album (great album), there's a fine re-interpretation of 'Mars The Bringer Of War'. The best version of this though I've heard is 'The Devil's Triangle' by King Crimson- the eeriest use of mellotron outside of VDGG's 'Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers' I've ever heard.
I have a really obscure psych track by a band called The Sands, the track is called 'Listen To The Sky' and it has part of 'Mars' used in the climax- a furiously heavy guitar interpretation.
'Beyond The Planets' did little for me, really. I found it a bit samey and plodding, plus I don't like those 80s synths on it...

And they performed more straight-forward versions of Mars on stage when the original lineup was still intact. One of the most powerful bits of music I've ever heard. They would end the piece with an air-raid siren.

It is a wonderful piece of music and it seems so influential. I can't recall a specific sing that reminds me planets though

Joybringer is Jupiter, Bringer of Joy.
After his death, Holst's daughter Imogen guarded the copyright of the Planets and would not permit any non-orchestral versions of the suite being performed or recorded and famously forced the withdrawl of Tomita's 1976 synth version. However, she did approve Manfred's rendition of Jupiter and allowed it to be release. The copyright lapsed in 1984, but Tomita's version did not see light of day until 1991.
Bathory also used the melody from Jupiter on the song Hammerheart . And I have a vague recollection of a NWOBHM band recording Mars - I never owned the album, but it was released on silver vinyl.

I'm surprised that The Devil's Triangle didn't get blocked then, if she was prohibitting non-orchestral recordings.

I had no idea about the non-orchestral deal with his daughter!!! I never knew Tomita's album was blocked either!!! I would love to get a copy of that on CD someday; it was my first exposure to that piece of music when I was young. Tasteful use of synths most of the time if I remember correctly. I can't believe no one mentioned th Star Wars theme- that is what I was fishing for;) Also "Magnum Opus" from Kansas' Leftoverture album draws from mars for sure!

It's on Led Zep III. It's a mostly acoustic number with John Paul Jones playing the main riff from Mars as the song progresses.

It is amazing to me how many recordings have The Planets fingerprints on them

Tomita's Planels was blocked in the UK - but I bought a copy of it in the US in 1977 and bought it back home.
Similarly, Wendy Carlos tells on the liner notes of her remastered CD By Request that the album was originally banned in the UK, because of her treatment of Elgar's Enigma Variations - odd because the LP was most certainly available a long time after its UK release with the track in place - and I have a copy purchased at the time to prove it.

Quite a few metal bands have used the theme of "Mars" in their songs ... Symphony X - The Divine Wings of Tragedy being the most obvious example, but there are more. Nile for example - but I can't remember which album it was.

i remember NWOBHM band "Diamond Head" used the "Mars" intro on one of their albums, it sounded great.
i saw "The Planets" performed at the Royal Albert Hall using the great organ, and the singers were placed high up above the gallery, a fabulous experience!

What, relationship if anything does Holst's Mars, have to Krimson (and therefore Anecdoten's) Mars?

Pretty much any movie score written by John Williams has The Planets all over it. Not only that, but people are missing the super obvious: Star Wars. Not only did John Williams all but plagarize Mars, they even used the planets as a temp track to get the "feel" right. The end.
