This next week I am running with the idea of summer prog.  I would like to put together a set of songs that we all feel fits the notion and feel of summer.  This includes songs specifically about summer, but also songs that have that summer feel (which may be a reified concept, just songs that make us think of summer due to where we heard them in our temporal landscapes).  Nevertheless, I would love to hear how others feel about such an idea, and what proposals you all have.  As always thanks for all your input.  I feel very honored to be part of a community of people who are willing to help me with these themes nearly every week now.  I do not know if you folks here are listening to my show, but I deeply appreciate the input regardless.

Cheers,
Woody

Try Nektar's "Recycled" (the album) and Rick Wright's "Wet Dream" (idem).

Sörskogen - Mordet i Grottan
The song has a summer feel to it, and the text is about something that happened during the summer!

The scattered jigsaw of my redemption laid out before my eyes
Each piece as amorphous as the other - Each piece in its lack of shape a lie

I though I was the only loser that use the phrase "Summer Prog". For me, Kansas - Masque and Steve Hackett "Spectral Mornings". Great Idea....

Summer tunes...must be up beat and make you want to party. For this, you would probably need to pick a generally positive band.

I have always related Yes's 90125 and Big Generator to summertime. While not particularly "happy", Tool's Eulogy and 46 & 2. They are songs that pump me up.

CAMEL "Breathless" (especially the songs "Summer Lightning" and "Echoes").

For non-prog stuff (but also great the same way), I would highly recommend some CHRIS REA early recording, such as "Auberge" and "Dancing With Strangers".

Demetrio.

Summer is a time of special beauty in nature, so PFM's lovely River of Life comes to mind, as does Crimson's pretty Lady of the Dancing Water. Smile

"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.

Genesis - I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)

Gentle Giant - Who Do You Think You Are?

Both songs are more pop but they are excellent, without a doubt.

Ah yes and how about Gentle Giant's Time To Kill?

It's true Progressive Rock, it is a very happy song and it perfectly fits to the summer, if you ask me. Wink

I've only heard the song White Bird, but maybe It's a Beautiful Day? The name sounds like summer...I guess technically that song takes place in winter but it sounds all around summery to me. I'll second In the Land of Grey and Pink too.

I'd extend that to all of Free Hand, except maybe "His Last Voyage"

Yes, that song always makes me think of summer because of the "As the sun beats down and I lie on the bench..." line.

Maybe "Forever Afternoon" by the Moody Blues and "Summer '68" and "Fat Old Sun" by Pink Floyd. "Flaming," also by Floyd, might work as well.

Well due to some strange issues with my email link I did not see some of the ideas posted here, but I am going to try to add them to next weeks show.  As always thank you everyone for your input.  Thanks to you guys I have learned about Gentle Giant, Caravan, and Camel this week.  All of these had not been on my radar.  Gentle Giant has been slowly setting in and I am quite enjoying what I have found.  Some of your suggestions were not in our dj servers or my collection, but thanks for all your input.  The new show is up, or going up right now.  http://www.thedividingline.com/ss - www.thedividingline.com/ss

Di Meola's acoustic projects, in particular his World Sinfonia albums and the Tirami Su/Cielo e Terra period is warm, evocative music that is quite summer-like.

How about the band http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2935 - Natsumen ? A Japanese band with a very charismatic personality and a love for all things summer.

You have album titles like:
http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=15022 - Kill Your Winter!!!
http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=15018 - Endless Summer Record
http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=15019 - Never Wear Out Your Summer XXX!!!

and song tittles like:
Newsummerboy
Whole Lotta Summer
August Still Sunburnt
Pills to Kill ma August

What more Summer do you need? LOL

P.S.
This is a real band.

'beyond and before' by yes (from their debut) always reminds me of summer, probably jon anderson's voice! It's more of a 'psychadelic' song, but it is by yes, and such a song would naturally lead one toward close to the edge, and fragile etc. That's really all that comes to me!

Kate Bush, "Aerial", 2nd CD.
Then try Riccardo Zappa "Celestion", KC "Island", Agitation Free "Malesch", Can "Future Days". If you refer to single songs, well... "Rivendell" by Rush, "The Remembrance" by Yes, and why not finishing with "Senti l'Estate che Torna" by Le Orme? There's also an English version of this song (Summer Coming).
