Hi Everybody,
I have a real challenge for you:
What is the BEST year of the Prog Rock and what is your favourite Albuns in that year?
Please choose only ONE year (I know there were so many magnificant years, but please choose just one).
My favourite year is 1971 with the albuns: “Nursery Crime”, “Meddle”, “Fragile”, “Tarkus”, and "Aqualung”.
It’s really a pitty, in that year Renaissance and Camel didn’t release any Albuns...
So fellows, what is yours ?
Best Greetings...

Jaja:
Ouch! Well, although I "feel for you" re 1971, I'd have to go with 1970:
A Question of Balance (Moody's) In the Wake of Poseidon (KC) Trespass (Genesis) Gentle Giant (GG) Time and a Word (Yes) Ummagumma (PF) Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP)
Actually, 1973 isn't bad either...
Larks Tongues in Aspic (KC) Selling England (Genesis) Octopus and In A Glass House (!) (GG) Close to the Edge (Yes) Dark Side of the Moon (PF) Brain Salad Surgery (ELP)
And I'm missing some others in both years...
Peace.

This was done before, and I believe 1971 was generally given the most
kudos (Lots of other classic rock came out that year as well, like Led
Zep IV etc). 1971 definitely gets my vote.
But basically a case can be made for any year 1968-1975, no real 'wrong answer'!

Well I will go with 1972:
- Foxtrot
- Close to the Edge
- 666
- Thick as a Brick
- Darwin!
- Octopus
- Per un Amico
- Birds of Fire
- Trilogy
- Demons & Wizards
Just to mention 10, but from 1970 to 1974 Prog' reached the peak.

1978
Flat out the best year in the history of music.
The music in 1978 is the most experimental, most sophisticated, best
recorded, most weird, and the creepiest for me. I'm happy with 1978 and
1979. Look at these titles and tell me I'm wrong. I DARE you

iI'll go for 1973 - Tales from Topographic Oceans, and Selling England by the Pound (and genesis Live) - Would have been a good year to see both Genesis and Yes.
Oh and ELP had a seond-rater out with Brain Salad Surgery - The art work is fantastic as is parts of Karn Evil...But 20 minutes of class is hidden by the rest of the dross on that album as well.
The ELP wallers on here just can't see past Emersons Organ or Greg Lakes Knob.........

1970 - 1975 were all great years, but if I have to pick one year, I'll go for 1974. On the strength of:
Mirage - Camel
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway - Genesis
Red - King Crimson
Relayer - Yes

Bem vindo Jaja Brasil.
It's almost impossible to pick a single, best year but, if push came to shove, I suppose I would go for 1972 with Trilogy, Fragile, Close To The Edge, Foxtrot, Storia Di Un Minuto, Thick As A Brick, Living In The Past, etc.

Frenchie's point is to some extent valid. Many albums are recorded in one year, then released in the next. Which year do you pick then? Some were not immediately successful, so although they were released in say '72, they were not sucessful until '73. This was especially true in the 70's, when there were far fewer opportunities to hear new albums upon release. Albums tended to gradually climb the chart as word of mouth went round.
I tend to think of how good years were in terms of the albums I bought that year, regardless of when they were released. Best year from that point of view, 2004! Loads of remasters, and so many bands I've discovered through this site.

Hi Everybody,
In "Fragile", I really confused the dates of record (71) and the date of release (72). Sorry guys!!!
So I will change my Favourite Year: 1973
Dark Side of the Moon / Topographic Oceans & Yessongs / Sellin England & Genesis Live / Ashes Are Burning / Brain Salad Surgery / The first Camel Album (in doubt if 73 or 74).
But I agree: from 68 to 75 are all great years to Prog Rock.
Best Greetings...

I'd go 1974.
It was probably the most abundant year. In addition, it was perhaps a peak year for many bands.
1974:
Camel - Mirage
Focus - Hamburger Concerto
Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
Gentle Giant - The Power and the Glory
Gryphon - Red Queen to Gryphon Three
Jethro Tull - War Child
Kansas - Kansas
King Crimson - Starless and Bible Black
King Crimson - Red
Museo Rosenbach - Zarathustra
Nektar - Remember the Future
Nektar - Down to Earth
Mike Oldfield - Hergest Ridge
Premiata Forneria Marconi - L'isola di Niente
Renaissance - Turn of the Cards
Return to Forever - Where Have I Known You Before
Supertramp - Crime of the Century
Tangerine Dream - Phaedra
Strawbs - Hero and Heroine
Yes - Tales from Topographic Oceans
Yes - Relayer
Frank Zappa - Apostrophe (')
Frank Zappa - Roxy & Elsewhere
Peace & take care

the albums I listed from other countries are as good
as the albums I listed from England if that is the
question you are asking. Many surpassing this
period in the UK.
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (eng)
Brian Eno - Another Green World
Camel - Snow Goose
Gary Wright - Dream Weaver
Jethro Tull - Minstrel in the Gallery
Gentle Giant - Free Hand
Renaissance - Scheherazade and Other Stories
Hatfield & the North - Rotters Club
A few are in their native language and are a little
more difficult, but 85% are accessible to all and
really great music. Im not trying to sell this I would
like some to open up to great things that all will like.
The really, really goods are
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (eng)
Brian Eno - Another Green World
Camel - Snow Goose
Gary Wright - Dream Weaver
Clearlight - Symphony (fra)
Lard Free - I'm Around About Midnight
Heldon - Allez Teia
Canarios - Ciclos* (spa)
Neu! - 75 (ger)
Edgar Froese - Epsilon In Malaysian Pale
Manuel Gottsching - Inventions for Electric Guitar
Dzyan - Electric Silence
Il Volo - Essere, o non essere* (ita)
Samla Mammas Manna - Snorungarnas Symfoni
(swe)
Journey - same (usa)
