Remixing Prog with Rap a Good Thing?

Just a few days ago, I was browsing around in my local Guess? Store, when over the speakers I was so overjoyed to hear ELP’s From the Beginning.  Although, this excitement, (no let me rephrase that, I was experiencing euphoria), was very short lived as I realized in horror that it was some new remix with rap thrown in.  I am assuming that this perhaps has already been brought up in the forums.  But lately I was hearing a lot of proto prog, and crossover songs like the Doors, and Rolling Stones being turned into rap, but now ELP????

At the same time though, despite it sounding bad to me because I’m used to the original song, is it actually such a bad thing?  I mean, if this is the only way to bring these masterpieces back from the dead and perhaps have those individuals who would have never otherwise hear ELP and others, the chance to at least  get a taste of it.  Should it actually be considered experimental? Should they be praised for their creativity and revitalizing material from our past?  Or is it just botching an otherwise perfect song?  You decide.

Myself, I really don't mind it so much as I think there is much to be gained here if some perhaps lesser known artists get remixed.  Maybe someone who hears the botched version of From the Beginning will love it, and this will lead to them going out and discovering more songs by ELP.   Who knows, maybe rap will perhaps learn something from Prog and become better artists themselves allowing for experimentation maybe one day creating some sort of Rap in Opposition.

And because I just can’t resist doing something random and silly, I decided I should perhaps update and make my favorite song Hip and Happening.  I should send this to perhaps Eminem since he’s making a comeback now and all.  Also, he is the only artist that doesn’t pose without a shirt, which is not telling me that, your badass, but rather, you’d do me for some crack.

It’s the Court of Crimson

He da Crimson King

Not to be confused with da burger king

He a real dope mothertrucker with a big brass ring

The Jester starts to play and the choir will sing

While our boys on the court just doing his thing

Sliding down the centre who gets a slam dunk

Not Don, or Steven but da Crimson King

Haha, that was so lame

And ELP was in that commercial... (see thread " forum_posts.asp?TID=41744 - NO!!!!!!!!!! ELP sells out.. " Thread). They be getting around...

I honestly don't think that any hip hop fan that likes the cover of a prog classic will like the original. I think they'll listen to it and go "What the (curse) is this Crap?!?!?!?" and just switch it off. Maybe if it's something catchy like "Carpet Crawlers" they'll eventually want to hear it again, but thats all dependent on IF they make it to the chorus...

There is another recent thread on PA regarding Kanye West performing a song from Can.  It didn't get too many good reviews from PA forum members.

Puff Daddy's "Come With Me" was not bad at all. Actually, it was the thing which first attracted me to what was to become my greatest love in music. I owe it to that guy.

Anyone ever notice how close Bob Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues is to rap.  In fact I once saw a rap music video from Jamaca that played tribute to Bob Dylan's song.  You know, the holding of the flashcards and such.

Good one Doctor, that was one pimpin songs, you really one uped my ass.  I thought I should leave out swearing since I just got threatened about being banned yesterday if I just do one more F$%#, I SAID FUDGE DAMMIT!!!!!

Here are the lyrics:

Johnny's in the basement
Mixing up the medicine
I'm on the pavement
Thinking about the government
The man in the trench coat
Badge out, laid off
Says he's got a bad cough
Wants to get it paid off
Look out kid
It's somethin' you did
God knows when
But you're doin' it again
You better duck down the alley way
Lookin' for a new friend
The man in the coon-skin cap
In the big pen
Wants eleven dollar bills
You only got ten

Maggie comes fleet foot
Face full of black soot
Talkin' that the heat put
Plants in the bed but
The phone's tapped anyway
Maggie says that many say
They must bust in early May
Orders from the D. A.
Look out kid
Don't matter what you did
Walk on your tip toes
Don't try "No Doz"
Better stay away from those
That carry around a fire hose
Keep a clean nose
Watch the plain clothes
You don't need a weather man
To know which way the wind blows

Get sick, get well
Hang around a ink well
Ring bell, hard to tell
If anything is goin' to sell
Try hard, get barred
Get back, write braille
Get jailed, jump bail
Join the army, if you fail
Look out kid
You're gonna get hit
But users, cheaters
Six-time losers
Hang around the theaters
Girl by the whirlpool
Lookin' for a new fool
Don't follow leaders
Watch the parkin' meters

Ah get born, keep warm
Short pants, romance, learn to dance
Get dressed, get blessed
Try to be a success
Please her, please him, buy gifts
Don't steal, don't lift
Twenty years of schoolin'
And they put you on the day shift
Look out kid
They keep it all hid
Better jump down a manhole
Light yourself a candle
Don't wear sandals
Try to avoid the scandals
Don't wanna be a bum
You better chew gum
The pump don't work
'Cause the vandals took the handles

You clearly misunderstand, they take a song, remix it with someone rapping, you must not have heard it before but the first time I did was on Need For Speed Underground, and the song The End, by the doors.  They had Jim Morrison singing followed by someone rapping and it went on.  Its acually almost the same as the original song, they just add some rapping, and have a beat in the background.

^^^ Ooooh.  That's called sampling.

To be honest I'm fan of these things and I enjoyed Snoop's sampling of The Doors (I heard it before I even knew what The Doors was LOL). Sampling can end up being pretty nasty, but when done right it's very enjoyable... if you like these sort of things.

"shiver" forgot about Supertramp, at least some of the sampling can be mildly entertaining, but the ones with Supertramp "vomits in mouth".

Hey, we must make a topic where we remake prog songs into rap, but they have to be at least a little bit like the original song, can't just be random sh*t and you throw in the word tarkus.

Oh, and thats a nice rack you have there Mrs. Geck0

Yes.  I wasn't into psychedelic music when I was playing Need For Speed Underground 2 and my curiosity for The Doors became bigger when I listened to that song.

See, I told you all, but you thought I was nuts!  This proves that it is possible although unlikely that a sample of a great classic song can drag somebody into the dark world of Prog.  Who knows, maybe I'll go into Guess? next week and the chick at the counter is wearing a PT T-shirt.

Although I have to admit I was already into prog by that time. I did checked out The Doors after listening to that song, though.

I get the gist of your question (Only talk about stuff that fits my strict criteria for this thread!), but the way you word it makes you seem extremely ignorant of hip hop culture, in which, if you didn't know, remixing is extremely popular.

So now you are enlightened.

That would make me the perfect troll at 21 posts boo!!!!

I thought I should correct myself that the song that was sampled was Riders of the Storm by the doors, just remembered because I loaded up Need for Speed Underground today.  You know what? I really don't mind it, I think its because of all those hours long ago playing NFSU that its just seemed to of implanted itself into my head.  Same the country music from Grand Theft Auto, I was always too lazy to find out the button to change the radio, and thus, got used to the Country Station with some sh*t kicker singing don't let you babies grow up to be cowboys, god help me.

But I originally wanted to bring up the question; do you actually think Rap or Hip Hop has the capabilities to become symphonic? Or even avent/rio?  I have recently heard some really strange songs influenced by many things that I have always thought couldn't be made into rock.  We have so many great songs that have just random gibberish as lyrics, some with people hissing, others just have bizarre noises of sorts, and yet still manage to fall into progressive category, why not rap or hip hop in the future?

Look back in time here a moment.  Did any of the classical music snobs (who in many ways are like us now) during the debut albums of pop by the beetles ever imagine rock as they knew it could be transformed into something artful?  No, it was simply thought of as garbage and that people where simple minded to like the stuff.  Then of course Sgt. Pepper came along and the whole thing is history.
