It appears to me that a good proportion of prog bands
that came to the fore during the 80's were from the UK for example:
Marillion, IQ, Pallas, Jadis, Twelfth Night, Trillogy, Haze, Solstice, Ark,
Citizen Cain, La Host, Quasar, The Bond, It Bites, Cardiacs, Pendragon & Galahad My question is; was it just a UK thing or were there prog bands being formed all over the world back during that time? I can see a lot of non UK bands that had their day in the 70's and 90's but why no 80's acts? Cardiacs? I have a tiny collection of Cardiacs, i.e. Sing To God parts 1 and 2 (I reckon this recording could do with remastering, if nothing else to have that masterpiece Smoking Gun Hand sound less muffled), the tribute album and a compilation 'borrowed' from a member of the fan club. SO Sigod, please further recommendations - and advice on nailing the albums. |

I used to co-run a PA hire company and we did the sound for the Cardiacs several times. Of all the bands we worked with (and there were hundreds) it is Cardiacs who stick in my mind. Not least because, the last time we worked with them, I was sick and could not attend and they were kind enough to send, via my partner, a copy of Rude Bootleg, signed by all of them! I have yet to hear their like, I think. ------------- Music and words, words and music - I'd be nothing without them |

Firstly Cardiacs; They have a very unique sound sort of like an unholy
cross between Prog and the children form the Midwitch Cuckoos (all
unearthly stares and scary chords). The musicianship is probably the
best I've seen from a UK band in the last 20 years, I mean have you
seen them play the opening sequence to 'It's A Lovely Day'? Scary
technique and an incredible sense of timing. Cardiacs  Secondly; non-uk prog bands. It's as much as I thought, there seems to be hardly ANY prog bands that were formed in the 1980's outside of the UK (although I still happy to be proven wrong). It's as if the world had given up on the genre and the only country that still cared to form new bands was within Britain. Pixel - Yeah Mike Holmes did push the hairstyle and sartorial boat a bit far out from the shore.   Emperor - Thanks mate, I was sure there was a few non-uk 80's prog acts. You forgot - Tamarisk and Daga Band - Three Fates would have liked them - Did ELP better than ELP and Greg Boynton (Classical Concert Pianist if i'm not mistaken) Was absolutely fabulous on the keyboards ! ------------- Play me my song, here it comes again |

Not at all Isildurs Bane were quite an interesting act and still going strong so I hear. King Diamond I know of (a mate of mine was a rabid fan of their's) but they were never my cup of tea. As for Nick Cave, mate what HAVE you been smoking??
