Does progressive rock have a place on Valentines day?  Has anyone ever wooed a loved one with a particular piece of proggy goodness.  What about sexuality?  How many progressive rock songs are there about sex?  I am trying to gather up a decent group of progressive songs for my valentines show.  I know Phil Collins is kind of a shoe in, but I am sure there are other love songs out there.  Anyone have any thoughts on the matter?

Does prog have a place on Valentines day..?

Not really, unless you want to woo someone with some awful mushy ELP ballad, but I cant see it myself. My intended valentine would probably be wooed with Van der Graff, which probably explains why I've managed to avoid marriage so far...or has marriage avoided me.. ?

^^^ Debbie, the young manager of a nearby Youth Hostel and I had to attend a meeting 2 hours drive away, yesterday.... on the way, she played me The Verve: Urban Hymns...to retaliate, I played her Circus Maximus: Isolate...Cool...not sure she was too impressed....

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

At least a few Jethro Tull tunes - Fires at Midnight is pretty valentine-ish for example.
Hunting Girl as well, but it's a little more kinky.

Well, our own romantic song is KC's "Starless"... I know it sounds a bit odd, but there is a reason why we are so attached to it. It was playing in Micky's car stereo as he drove me to Dulles Int'l Airport the evening of Nov , 2006 - at the end of our first two weeks together. Since then, it has become our song.Heart

Richard Ashcrofts voice is like nails on a blackboard to me! Some of the songs on that album aren't bad, though...

I'm sure she loved your choice of music. You're probably 'in' there, Jared.

Why not try 'Frances the Mute' next time, she'll be all over you like an ill fitting suit.

In 1971, I was in the middle of a turbulent relationship, during one of the "lows" I sent her a note, which just said: "We're all awash in a sea of blood, the least we can do is wave to each other".  Stolen straight from the VDGG album cover. It seemed to do the trick until a few weeks later she spotted the quote, needless to say we're not together anymore. Confused

Easily the greatest quite you didn't come up with yourself. I'd use it too a lot more if it hadn't already been written. : )

Well, there's Jethro Tull's "Wond'ring Aloud" which is very short song but lovely in it's own way. King Crimson's "Matte Kudasai" and "The Power to Believe: A Capella".

On the creepier or funnier side of the tracks would be (as was already mentioned) much of FZ's catalogue. There's Porcupine Tree's "Sleep Together"; Mr. Bungle have the subtly thought provoking songs of "Love is a Fist" and "The Girls of Porn".

Of course, if you're willing to go Proto, you'll find LOTS of stuff. Most any Beatle's song will do.

Better though, are a few songs in Spirit's repetoire: "I Got A Line On You", "Morning Will Come", and "Aren't You Glad" are all begging to be covered in more modern ways!

I came to think of some Hatfield and the North as well.

'Didn't matter anyway' from Rotter's Club, for example, is nice song:

It didn't matter anyway
We'll meet again some other day
Till then keep well
You'll be in my dreams
Goodnight, goodbye, bye for now...

So my question is, did you pass this off as your own words?  Or did she simply leave when she discovered it was VDGG?

I am not so sure about "Sleep Together".  It seems to me this is a song about committing suicide together.  Perhaps that is romantic, but I am not seeing it.  I think Ptree is a tough place to find a love song.  Wilson's world seems very bleak at best.  The closest I get is maybe "Heartattack in a Layby" as the guy sits and thinks of his wife during his heart attack, and then finally gets to go home.

BTW, where does the song Wond'ring Aloud come from?  Which album?

Isn't this a song about Death?  It contains quotes like "I'm not frightened of dying, why I should I be"

I dont think ive ever listened that closely to the spoken word of that song to get the meaning out of It. the melody alone is beautiful enough to be sung (if you can hit the high register of the singer then you are missing a y chromosome) or at least played. Personally, Ive always thought the song was very sexual.
Agreed with the proto, the moody blues have many love songs as do the beatles.
As for my own suggestion, This Heart of Mine (I Pledge) by Pain of Salvation.
For those who like Aphex Twin, "Windolicker" is certain to get the blood flowing.

True enough, but it's renowned to the point of being clichéd as a smoochy making-out song.  There's probably some terribly clever point about the psychological connection between sex and death to be made there.

It's from their last Seventies album, When the Eagle Flies.

BTW, when posting in another thread some time ago, I thought of another song I love, which I find very romantic... UK's "Rendezvous 6:02".
