Just something odd from me:
Take 5-10 bands you know at least a few albums from, your favourite album from each, and your favourite song from each.
Order by band, album and song preference.
Add together the numbers and place in order.
E.g.
Bands 1. King Crimson (21st Century Schizoid Man, Larks' Tongues In Aspic) 2. Genesis (The Musical Box, Selling England By The Pound) 3. Emerson, Lake & Palmer (Take A Pebble, Emerson, Lake & Palmer) 4. Rush (Cygnus X-I, Caress Of Steel) 5. Van Der Graaf Generator (Arrow, Godbluff) 6. Yes (South Side Of The Sky, Close To The Edge) 7. Pink Floyd (One Of These Days, Animals) 8. Jethro Tull (Thick As A Brick, Thick As A Brick) 9. Camel (Lady Fantasy, Moonmadness)
Albums 1. Larks' Tongues In Aspic 2. Close To The Edge 3. Thick As A Brick 4. Godbluff 5. Emerson, Lake & Palmer 6. Selling England By The Pound 7. Animals 8. Caress Of Steel 9. Moonmadness
Songs 1. 21st Century Schizoid Man 2. Thick As A Brick 3. Cygnus X-I 4. South Side Of The Sky 5. Take A Pebble 6. Lady Fantasy 7. The Musical Box 8. One Of These Days 9. Arrow
King Crimson 3
Yes 12 ELP 13
Jethro Tull 13 Genesis 15 Rush 15 VDGG 18 Pink Floyd 22 Camel 24
Don't know quite why I did this, except I felt I was under-rating bands such as Tull because of releases I didn't particularly like at the expense of my enjoyment and appreciation of their finest. Conversely, I could have been overestimating my love for VDGG, because their material is consistently good, even if the individual songs aren't standouts.
