Why do I have to a Noobie - what do I have to do to leave this behind? I suppose you should say "Noobie" in the way that Dr. Cox says it on "scrubs" then I can cope with it...
You can probably guess what I like from the name (and from my reviews...). I'm in my 40's and of old I loved Pink Floyd, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Gong, Traffic and ELP. I lost much interest in music during the 80's when music seemed to go very bad, but I had a revival particularly in Pink Floyd, Genesis and Jethro Tull about 5 years ago.
When my wife told me to stop "living in the past" so much (I bought another copy of "Living in the Past" by JT to really wind her up), I decided to try some new bands that could give me the music of the old days - with the added bonus of being able to see them live and take the kids - so I turned to your website, and found Porcupine Tree, Mars Volta, Oceansize, Amplifier, Ozric tentacles etc... (what others would you recommend?)
The name Pink Pangolin is a combination of my love for Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree's music - Pangolin being a little close to Porcupine - and interestingly Pangolins was the name of an imaginary band I made up when I was a kid, but never came to pass (despite doing my own tapes of their music). Imagine my fascination when I found out that "Porcupine Tree" was formed on the same basis (Steve Wilson doing his own tapes of their music!)! And yet (unlike the Pangolins) did become for real!!!!!!!! Especially 'Pangolin' being so close to 'Porcupine' in name!!!!!

Everyone new here starts that way. I worked my way up to four star prog reviewer fairly quickly by writing some good reviews that caught the attention of at least one person higher on the food chain here. I'm in my 40's, too. You will find more stuff on this site old and new than you'll probably be able to handle. My philosophy is never turn your back on or give up the old stuff. I was pleasantly surprised to find a new generation of prog musicians as well as a new generation of prog frans here.
On the new side, I'd recommend Pure Reason Revolution, Talisma, Pineapple Thief, Parallel Mind, Phideaux, The Reasoning. Already into Porcupine Tree and Ozric Tentacles, discovered before I found this site.
I'm not sure how you make it to five star status, I'm thinking you have to sleep with a five star member or something.

Welcome Pinkpangolin! See you've been helped on your way already.
As for the five start thingy: are you sure you want that many up your sleeve? It takes 100 forum posts to get past Newbie, so just stick around!

Doesn't it take 20 to become a Groupie, and then 100 to become a Senior Member?
Edit; Oh yeah, almost forgot: Magma.

Howdy from Texas and welcome to the club. As far as being a noobie, it's a lot better than having to wear a beanie with a propeller on top and wearing a tee shirt that says "Elvis lives!"
I, too, like some of the groups you mentioned and I'd recommend "Space Revolver" by the Flower Kings. I think you'd love it.

Thank you for your replies you important senior guys!! It's nice to know someone's listening. Thank you for your suggetsed bands etc.. as well. I'll have to look into those! As for the suggested 20 or 100 posts, my number of 6 seems rather paltry to your thousands! Don't reviews count for anything? I have 38 I think....
As for the title "Groupie" - is that better than "noobie"? Not sure I'm feminine enough!!
Thanks again!

Edit your user profile using the bit at the top of the page that says " Member Control Panel"
Click on "Edit Profile"
scroll down to the section that says:
Select Avatar This is the small icon shown next to your posts. Either select one from the list or type the path in to your own Avatar (must be 64 x 64 pixels).
...and follow the instructions.

Keep posting over and over - think quantity over quality.

Good news, guys - I'm not a "noobie" any more. As soon as I hit 40 posts it went up to "Goopie"
Not sure I like the term "Groupie" though (not sure what it implies!!)
What have you got to do to reach "Senior Member" ??!!??

As Micky once told me, you don't really become fully initiated to the forums until you have a post removed for inappropriate content.
Sorry Dean, don't mean to encourage additional work for the Admins.

Please - how do you do it?

Here's a thread: forum_posts.asp?TID=12630 - How Do I post Pictures?
And let me quote one of our admin's post from that thread:
Tony R wrote:
First two important points to remember:
1. Picture content: The forum administrators have made it known that
no pornographic, unsuitable or copyrighted images, cartoons or gif
animations should be posted on the site-failure to comply with this
could result in expulsion from the forum.
2. You cannot (at the moment) cut/copy and paste directly from your
Pc. I advise joining an on-line "imagestation" like Photobucket or Sony
Imagestation. Photobucket accepts Gif animation uploads whereas Sony
only permits Jpegs.
For the purpose of this guide I will describe posting images using Photobucket.
Photobucket : http://photobucket.com/ - http://photobucket.com/ is
free to join and remains free if you only want to use up to 50 mb of
storage space (about 200 average photos and Gifs).Fill in the
registration form and away you go.
Images From Your Computer:
In the "Your" Album area of Photobucket click "browse" and select
the image you want to upload from the folder on your PC.Click submit
and after a short while (depending on you connection speed) the image
will appear in the "album." Beneath the image you will see 'URL', 'TAG'
and 'IMAGE'.Click in the box next to URl and it will highlight in blue.
Right-Click and click "copy".
Next we are going to post the image on the forum.
In the 'Post Reply' box click this button: javascript%20openWinRTE_image_window.asp,insertImg,toolbar=0,location=0,status=0,menubar=0,scrollbars=0,resizable=0,width=400,height=200"> .
An 'Insert Image' box appears. Click in the 'Image URL' box and clear
the contents.Right-click and click 'paste' and the address of the image
(which you copied in Photobucket) will appear. Click 'OK' and the image
should appear in the box. Note: the image will only appear if you have the full address of the image including "http:"
Images From The Web:
To post an image from the web right-click the image and click
'properties'. Find the text that says 'Address URL' and highlight the
address starting "http:" (double left-click and it will turn blue) right-click and click 'copy.' In the post reply box follow the instructions above under:Next we are going to post the image on the forum.
You can also put these web images in Photobucket by clicking "[ http://photobucket.com/albums/v619/reedlover/?addtype=web -
This is by no means the definitive way to do this and some pictures
on the web will copy and paste directly into the forum. It is, however,
the way I do it and it works for me |

Another post from that thread showing one more way to post a picture:
Tony R wrote:
Another simple way to post pictures from the Internet:
Right click on the picture/graphic and select "properties". Where
it says address highlight the info which starts "http" eg (try on zacs
sig pic
above)http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b51/zacm1587/magnus2.jpg
(to highlight the full address left-click anywhere in the address
then double-click to select all the info) with the text highlighted in
blue right-click and select "copy".
Now in the post reply box or wherever you want to post the image do the following (IGNORING THE " " s)
type:
"["IMG"]"
after the last ] press CTRL on your keyboard and V to paste the address(Ctrl+V),then type "["/img"]" (of course without the " )
Like this:
Your image should appear eg

One more thing: to get javascript%20openWinRTE_image_window.asp,insertImg,toolbar=0,location=0,status=0,menubar=0,scrollbars=0,resizable=0,width=400,height=200"> button you must enter the full reply box by clicking .

It's really dangerous to let folks know how to link to pictures. I am a prime example.

Now I've managed that - how do I do that thing where I include comments from previous posts so I can discuss them better?
Trouble is - I think that's a little dangerous (taking things out of context and all that!)

You just hit the [ http://www.progarchives.com/forum/new_reply_form.asp?M=Q&PID=2881849&PN=2&TR=28 - Quote ] button at the top of the post and edit away. The forum is driven by BBcode, ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBCode - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBCode ), so if you want to split up a quote you have to insert your own code to to that

don't delete all the extra text (all the stuff in square brackets is needed!)
it should look like this, but with [ ] instead of ( )
